Wow. Thanks for sharing your experience. Good luck whether or not you decide to continue. (I sense your frustration.)

A few questions:

(1) Have you tracked how much money you spent on all your sessions?
(2) If you fresh shave today, how long before you see/feel any stubble growing back?
(3) How are you judging the density now and when you started?
(4) Where do you fall on the Norwood MPB scale?

1) First of all, I live in Russia. One sessions for whole head costs about a 100$ here. I guess I made about 10-12 sessions already.

2) I am very meticulous about that moment, so even a 0.5mm hair already annoy me. I guess it takes 1-2 days for stubble to grow back. On the photos I have no shave for 3 days (yes, as I said they are growing slow for now, only 2 month break from last session).

3) I make photos of progress since the day of the first session. I mean, i ve already had the similar situation : you see almost no shade (cause hair are very weak, so even skin around them is pink, not gray), the density of hair that broke through skin is lower. But it takes some month for more hairs breaks through skin, and day by day density is going to initial state, the skin becomes gray etc.

4) I had about 4 Norwood. And was very sure in my decision. And i am still. Definetly. If I will succeed in treatment, I will be very satisfied with my clean aesthetically beautiful head.

------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------

For now, I am really considering to take another 2-3 month break to make some conclusion about the REAL permanent results (not just the shock state of scalp hair).

But.. I guess that s what I will do:

1. I ll wait another month to be sure all the hairs are in active growing phase already (necessary condition of follicle nest termination)

2. Find the clinic with Alexandrite laser equipment with 16-20mm spot size (bigger size - deeper laser penetration) with power setted to 40+ J/cm2 at the same time. Follicles located very deep in scalp skin - 5-6 mm, twice deeper than any other skin area on the human body. Really hard for laser to reach, I think (medical papers i found claims the same)

3. Take 5-6 month break if the result will be satisfying, to prove it with the time.

I dont know what to do else. Please, dont say "you should consult with your doctor". Here, no "specialist" even know very basic things about laser epilation and conditions for successful laser treatment.

Still waiting for some advices. Thanks for all, guys.

just made another laser session few days ago on the equipment i havent tried before.

equipment : Cynosure Elite+ (Alexandrite)

settings : 15 mm spot size, 30 J/cm2 fluence (maximum on this spot size), 25 ms pulse duration

nothing unusual, 2 days of skin redness, painful treatment.

lets see in a few monthes, if it will be effective for me.

Biological and clinical aspects in laser hair removal (very comprehensive publication about laser hair removal)

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/8503999_Biological_and_clinical_aspects_in_laser_hair_removal

Simulation of Heat Distribution and Thermal Damage Patterns of Diode Hair-Removal Lasers: An Applicable Method for Optimizing Treatment Parameters (about the extended theory of selective photothermolysis and choosing a pulse duration based on the concept of the thermal damage time (TDT), not thermal relaxation time (TRT))

https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/pho.2010.2895

next time i ll try both original and extended theory of selective photothermolysis:

will try half area with pulse width based on TRT - 10ms
and half area with pulse width based on TDT - 300-400ms

there is a lot of interesting information in these publications. if you want to understand deeper the aspects of laser hair removal.

Wow, great article. So it looks like the Diode laser is a good one for brown and black scalp hair and the IPL is the best for lighter colored scalp hair.  And it looks like monthly treatments for scalp hair is the best way to go for permanent removal.

Sure wish I would have done it before my hair went gray!

My hair went really thin starting around 13 due to some skin issues. It wasn't until I was 23 that I went for the clippers. I switched to razors a few years after that and have been mostly bald since - I do have a penchant for getting lazy and letting my hair grow for a week or two at a time. I go to a barber to get cleaned up - no mess for me to deal with.

I jokingly said to my barber three months ago that he's going to be in for a surprise when once day I get laser hair removal, thinking it's not a done thing for heads. He surprised me by telling me about other clients he has had do it and encouraged me to look into it.

That led me to Google, which lead me here. Let me thank you all for sharing your stories and adventures in laser hair removal for your heads. Given that I'm in my mid-30s and have two visible stray grays now, I figured it was now or never.

I made the jump today.

Going in without numbing cream was a huge mistake - I figured I could take it. I was wrong. They sold me some and I came back a bit later ready to go with the cream applied.

I've had my back neck and total scalp treated. With the cream applied it was a little painful still, but more in a grit and bear it kind of way.

I could not find anyone in my region that does scalps, so I'm driving about 2.5 hours each way to the place I chose. They were really nice about me coming back today, dealing with the pain, and helping throughout the scheduling through to purchase process. I have dark hair and relatively pale skin and they have an Alexandrite laser, so I'm thinking this will work out well.

I'm excited to see how things turn out. Thanks again to everyone for their encouraging stories and conversations.

I would LOVE to hear how this works out for you longterm. I always wished I had DARK hair. Even now that would be an advantage for this.

I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on clinic in Chicago area. I skimmed through about 20 pages of reply and haven't found any recommendations. Thanks.

@ANASFIL , wow, it takes alot of guts for someone with such a thick head of hair to permanently go bald! So far, it looks awesome. I hope you enjoy it.
Bald by choice, and loving it!

Looks great.  How was the pain level when they were doing it?  Any pain afterward?  Did they give you an indication of how many treatments may be needed to achieve permanent results?

I do not think I would have done it when I had a full head of hair.  I would consider it now since I am bald on top, if there was a treatment that would work on gray and white hair.

The pain level was tolerable, and it calmed down just a few minutes after it was completed. The esthetician, couldn't give me an exact number of treatments it would take. Probably 9 to 10 and some sessions with electolysis for the white hair.
