Title: Handle bar
Post by: Raulski on February 01, 2013, 05:44:21 AM
I'm in handle-bar mo mode at the moment. I like to change up my facial hair (while always keeping the head smooth) but this is my first handle-bar attempt.
Anyone else sport a handlebar or similar old-school style?

I have an online friend who completely rocks the handlebar; and he's sly as well. I won't post a photo of him without permission, but he's proof positive that the sly+handlebar look is completely awesome.

I think they look cool.  I have seen some pictures of some mighty long ones on you-tube.  But I also like the Walrus .

Nice,

I am in the early stages of my first handlebar. Mine ends at the corners of my mouth, ie doesn't go as low as yours!

You are rocking the look though.

I grow the beard in every winter and keep it trimmed pretty tight.  Last two winters I've let the 'stache do it's own thing and am in full handlebar mode since early December.  Lot of days I just brush it into a loose shape, others I take the time to wax and curl it properly.   Doesn't work for me without the beard ( I tried that last spring and it lasted 2 days)  so it all goes away in the spring.  I need to update my pictures on here...

Have a drawer full of waxes that I've tried and am slowly building a collection of moustache coombs.

Looking good Lynchy. I'm going to shorten mine over time for variety. I grow facial hair like Osama bin laden so it's a bit of a challenge to tame it into any style. I gotta wax it or I look just silly

That monopoly guy is pretty cool. I've seen a few tshirts, wallets etc with his image on them lately. I think you could be compared to worse :)

Welcome, Raulski! I think the handle bar you have now looks good....but if you want to tweak it, go for it! The ones on Sailor and Lynchy look nice, also! I may try to do one down the road, but can't at this present time.

Raulski, Great looking Van Dyke and dome. The two look great together. Your van Dyke looks nice and full. Wish mine was thicker. I like the handle bar mostache too.

Sailor and Lynchy, great looking handle bar mostaches. Sailor, I like your nice full beard. It looks good on you.

Hrmm, I wonder if I could pull an impressive handlebar mo at the moment... Might have to get some moustache wax and see... I'll see how I feel Thursday. The handle bars can look pretty cool with a  full beard.

I didn't realise your name is Beardman :). That's awesome! Spectacular beard too. I'm stupid-jealous. I can't grow a beard like that. Mine just gets thicker & tighter; doesn't grow 'down' or 'long'.
This is the best I could do(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F13%2F02%2F03%2F6apezezu.jpg&hash=6a3d14aca6c7c91ea835cf9ac129090dffafe26a)

You should definitely give it a go.

I think full beard and handlebar is a winner.

Indeed, let it go and comb, brush it !  A person never knows until they try and give the old face follicales a chance.  !  Lynchy like that handlebar , also the lip ring !

It's all about time and patience Raulski, I haven't trimmed my goat since March last year, and It already had a bit of length to it already. I've always been the a fan of a longer goat. I was actually rocking the Van Dyke until the end of October, when I decided to grow out the full beard, and I'm yet to trim that either, I'm hoping it hurries up and sits down soon though!

Keep any eye out for a new photo some time from Thursday onwards, I've got a 30th birthday on Saturday so I might hold off until then and braid my beard and go with the handlebars too. Just pull all the punches haha.

Sounds like a winner. Ill look out for the pics. I did have a bleached goatee with a hair band in it for a brief moment. Never long enough to plait. Ill see how I go. (The wife isn't a fan of the beard but that's already been addressed in another thread).

Raulski, you have some kick-ass looks going on.. I'm not sure I know what you have at the moment.. I'm thinking it's the handlebar mo w/ goat.  (I think I like that one the best). O0

Lynchy, yours is looking good too...it looks fun.

And Raulski, I agree... the monopoly man is pretty cool.

Had a stash for years , use a reg comb and some CLUBMAN  MOUSTACHE WAX !  That is what is on the tube not yelling ! Neutral is thicker  and goes with all color's.  Colored is thinner and to me causes irritations.  This company has been around for years.

I bought a make-up brush/comb at a $2 shop yesterday. I think it's for eyebrows & lashes. It seems to do the trick really well. Similar to the comb/brush you get with the clubman wax but the bristles are longer & handle longer. I like it.
Oh, and Thanks for turning my pic around :)

Looking Good Raulski! I've been into my local shaver shop a couple of weeks in a row now, still no moustache wax, I think next pay day I'll be ordering some online, to try the handlebar out. I was wondering though, my brother has some normal hair wax laying around in the bathroom, how do you reckon that would work out? I've been contemplating trying that out, but haven't yet.

You should try out a regular non-toxic glue stick, it's what I use 90% of the time. That and got2b glued by Schwartzcoff, for the main bulk of it and the glue stick on the tips. That way if you not a fan you haven't wasted too much coin.

I have the FOAD wax (doesn't have enough hold for me) and some Fire House Wacky Tack on the way.

Oh and blow dry it into style thats most of the battle IMO

Haven't tried glue stick. Was going to try Chapstick but my wax arrived in time :)
I do use regular hair wax or gel if I need it & it's around. I think it works fine if you don't mind the smell right under your nose (opens up a few questions about the glue stick ;) )

Nice,

You will have to do a mini review of the wax to share your thoughts!

I find that the glue stick and got2b glued smells dissipate pretty quickly YMMV

Chapstick is an interesting idea, will rummage around and maybe do a test on the weekend.

New pic of this year's handlebar.   Broken with the "approved" method and been keeping the bar (area over your mouth) thinned out a bit...untrimmed it gets too bushy.  The handles are almost at the 2 inch point! Unfortunately the whiskers are too coarse to get a curl on without resorting to heavy amounts of "stuff" and I find that uncomfortable.   I've also let the chin get a bit longer/fuller than usual while keeping the jaw/cheek parts trimmed down fairly tight.

The moment of truth arrives in another month or so when the beard goes away for the warm weather...
Last year the 'stache lasted a day or 2 on its own. I'm optimistic that this year's thinned down version may look better on its own.

Suggestions welcomed...

Well here's the very beginnings of a handle bar, mine always seems to go Poirot style(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F13%2F03%2F13%2F7epy6e4a.jpg&hash=02eecbf67f265e7a4a495c396b022b7161b0a70c)

Nice work.

Are you planning to keep growing it?

Slyfive, that's a good look. Keep going.
Sailor, that goes triple for you!! Just an awesome stache; with or without the beard. I like the beard but have to admit I do wanna see the stache on its own. It rocks.

What did you use?
Title: Re: Handle bar
Post by: slybeard on March 15, 2013, 10:09:06 PM
Clubman.  I know there's better mustache wax, but this is what I found in my local drug store.  I have used it before just to help manage the longer hairs that would otherwise get in my mouth, but not to wax the curls on the ends.

Bounder's and Firehouse Wacky Tacky are both great 'stache waxes. Unfortunately they are only available online..try Amazon or google on the brand names.   Both, I think, are better holds than Clubman and have a much easier to live with scent.

All good,

I used a bar of soap when I first did mine to see if I liked the look lol

Many swear by the clubman, was out of stock when I first went to buy.

Hey guys,

Thought I would do a little update:

Easter Sunday was my birthday and my beautiful wife made me this sweet moustache cake! (That’s Mum in the photos BTW.)

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi610.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt188%2FCarpe_diem_wgi%2F98D874C6-013C-4860-BF2F-5D7D6AD51999-6209-000003A7C82E2FDD_zps3f9fb32b.jpg&hash=2b9d1460be8a955a73364f674a7640139635b8e0)

It tasted even better than it looked! Coupled that with some fine beers and a nice big steak... life is good!

And here is an updated picture of my lip lawn! I was being silly wearing my 2year olds jacket as a hat on our family walk.

(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi610.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt188%2FCarpe_diem_wgi%2F1CC03A7F-DFAD-4E3E-85AE-0FE76FD199DB-6209-000003A7D08CCCB1_zps40674824.jpg&hash=acc1e32efa5d971877a15cd4c11fc6ec0ab3e55c)

Still loving it and using the Firehouse Moustache Wax nearly exclusively, I think it is a winner.

Thanks guys

Lynchy. Awesome cake & awesome mo. Thanks for the post. Sounds like a great day. Glad to hear it.
My mo's going through a difficult phase but I'm persisting. About to get some Bounder wax as it has the most "not a hair moved all day" reviews I've seen.
Actually I've just been brushing it lately & not waxing at all (perhaps that's why it's being difficult...) (https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F13%2F04%2F08%2Fqeha8eqe.jpg&hash=dc5995f4decf71bfe21984b0b8f6ed17d6ee6c9e)Also haven't shaved in 3 days. But that's another post for another thread

Thanks Raulski. It was a good day!

Man your stache is gonna be awesome once you get some Bounders in there. It looks really thick and dense.

Mine also strays in and out of difficult stages, just as one idiosyncrasy is overcome another raises its head/hair lol. It's all part of the fun I guess!

Make sure you post a pic/review once you get the new wax.

I'm keen to try it also because it gets such awesome reviews.

While I'm super envious of your mustache, I'm very glad that after 3 days of growth my neck is much cleaner.  I can't imagine shaving that much hair my neck would be soar  :o

Also Lynchy, is that lip piercing I see there?  I used to sport a couple of those some years back  ^-^

I used to be in the same boat until I switched to traditional wetshaving with a DE, I could never shave it gave my horrible ingrown and razor burn on the neck. You should give it a try :)

Yeah it is a lip piercing, good fun.

Looking good slyfive.  I've given up trying for a handlebar as one side is fine but the other droops even with wax.  Must be a genetic fault!!

My beard had its 47th birthday today.
Title: Re: Handle bar
Post by: Slyfive on May 01, 2013, 04:56:12 AM
Congrats Nuts! Mine has the same problem and is actually a lot longer than it looks, the tips always flick out towards the front so the look much shorter, and the right takes twice as long to shape.

Adamski, I just use a regular water-soluble PVA glue stick, it works a treat and gives you enough time to shape well.

Tightly curled with Got2B Glued. Wrapped it around a pen lid and hit it with the hair dryer. Hope you like it.

Looking good, Sailor and Lynchy.  After trimming in early March, I finally have enough length to style.  So while on vacation recently I experimented with a few different styles (all using Got2B Glued).  My wife is not too keen on the curl styles, so I normally just wear it down, with the center waxed to the side to keep the hairs out of my mouth.  But hey, she is OK with the beard and shaved dome, so I feel lucky compared to what others have said.

Settling in to the stand alone handlebar.   The summer humidity does post a few challenges but I seem to be getting the hang of keeping it set up.

Hey guys,

Here are some of my latest mo-related acquisitions. An antique moustache curler and 3 moustache mugs. All in all I'm pretty happy with them.

Not sure if I will use the curler as its deteriorating, but still cool to have none the less.

Welcome back, Raulski! Looks good, keep it up! Ironically, on Tuesday at the Veterans clinic, I ran into a guy with a nice handlebar, but he had a horseshoe cut close (about 1"). The next day, I ran into this exact same guy at the store and he was wearing his top hat. He then said "I want to thank you and the other guys for inspiring me to do this". He then took off his hat and his dome was shiny sly! The MPB short cut didn't look too bad, but his handlebar looked even better with the sly head! Who says walking around sly doesn't have an impact?

Really like the mo style you have Sailor, I have been trying to mimic it without much luck.  I can get a tight curl, but not wide curl you have.  I guess my mo hair just has its limits, so I will have to settle for what I've got.

Glad to see you are back, Raulski.  I have been missing your comments.

Bayou, sly seems to be catching on everywhere in Louisiana.  I was in a restaurant yesterday and noticed the two other male customers were sly, and so was the male server.

Slybeard...you might try some 100% lanolin as a leave in conditioner to help relax your mo.   Put a very little bit in at night before bed and leave it there.   Rub a tiny amount over the 'stache then heat a bit with a hairdryer and comb it through.   It adds greatly to the shine, managability and softness.   You can get it as plain old pharmaceutical grade lanolin in some drug stores or natural food places...WalMart and Target carry it labeled as nipple cream for nursing mothers...just check the label to get the 100% lanolin one.  Not cheap but well worth the 10 bucks f
or the small tube

'Chocks away!' Is definitely what I was going for, it's becoming a catchphrase. Harry, the fuzz on the chin is sticking around, I always wear a bit of stubble, but it'll be a while before the beard returns, it took too much effort! And speaking of effort, yes mr J, it's a daily wax, but if I don't, it still hold a nice, more relaxed shape on the second day. Thanks Myke, crazy is my M.O.

Not too late at all, Joe....Looking good, reminds me of the strong man at the circus with the shaved head and handlebar mustache....and I mean that in a good way. (On a side note, that was one of my childhood heroes, which when I started balding, made going sly a lot easier.)

Cheers slybeard and Bayou Sly.

'Circus Strongman' was the look I was aiming for and I have yet to meet anyone (over the age of 20) who hasn't loved the look.

For anyone thinking of growing a set ... just do it. That moment when someone has a double-take or misses a step because they are in such awe of your hairstute appendage of the upper lip, complete with graspable extremities is a pretty nice feeling.

The thought had crossed my mind...

What's the maintenance like on a set of 'bars ?
Title: Re: Handle bar
Post by: slybeard on July 31, 2013, 07:21:42 AM
Mr. Jules,  when I decide to wax the curl into my mo, it take me about 20 min or so to get it into shape.  My normal daily style is to just comb the mustache to the side and down on the sides and to blend in with the beard.  I still have to use some product to hold the mustache hairs to the side and out of my mouth, so about 5 minutes.  I suspect if I curled it daily, I would improve my efficiency.

The product is use is "Got2be Glued" which is actually marketed as a hair spiking glue.  My mustache hair, if left to its own, just curls down into my mouth.  Other mustache waxes that I tried were not "stiff" enough to hold my mustache in shape and out of my mouth.  The "Got2be Glued" is very stiff, drys quickly with a blow dryer, and washes out easily with water.

In all, I spend less time on my mustache/beard styling than I previously spent trying to style my scalp hair.

Did a curl today in the mustache - it has not been trimmed since March.  I am not sure how much longer I will keep it this length, but it is something I have always wanted to try.  If you have never grown a handlebar, you should try it at least once.  It is not just a 30 day trial like going sly - it takes a long time.

Ok guys...so here's the glove being thrown down....I've hit my moustache goal...12 glorious inches of facial furriness/moustache madness from tip to tip...   Generally keep it combed out loose and slightly curled/swept up but for the sake of admiration...and measurement....here it is an ultra waxed English style...
