Title: Job Interview tomorrow during my lunch break at current job
Post by: Plano on February 11, 2013, 04:15:58 PM
Hello all, long time no talk!

Tomorrow (In NYC), I have a job interview with a really good company (a dot com company). I am taking the interview on my lunch break from my current job which really isn't as it was initially described to me.

Does anyone out there have any tips or tricks on nailing interviews? I think of myself as pretty decent at interviews, but I've had so few, so I was just curious if anyone had any insight. This job is in the sales sector, and though I've wanted to get out of sales, this seems like a very good opportunity. (If anyone knows of any other jobs out there in the NYC area, let me know, of course)

Also, related, but not an issue, I have a decent sized cut on my head from a snow removal fiasco over the weekend here in NY, show up with a bandage or just let the sore show and say it was from losing a knife fight with a monkey?

Any and all responses are welcomed!

Two big things: Maintain eye contact with the interviewer and be sure to thank them for their time at the end of the interview. If you maintain eye contact, I don't think they'll notice/care about the cut on your head. Good luck!

P.S. Unless the cut is still bleeding, I would NOT wear a bandage; it might attract unwanted attention. But if you must wear one, wear one that is just enough to cover the wound. (You could always say you underwent surgery if you need a good lie)

Be truthful....................no bullshit. Eye contact and answer questions directly without going ''off the rails''.

Agreed ... Eye contact, sincere and genuine. Tell about how you can benefit the company, ask questions about the interviewer or company to show your interest. Good manners - these days especially - will often put you above many other candidates.

Good luck ... glad to see you back here, was wondering what had happened to you.

Follow up the interview with thank you letters to each member of the panel. Also, make sure that each one is a little different.

I have always looked at job interviews as an opportunity for me to interview them as well. I ask questions about how they do things, what my responsibilities will be, and what they expect of me. I NEVER ask questions about benefits or perks...... those can be discussed at a later date if they have real interest.

Asking the correct questions lets them know that you are serious about seeking the job, have a real interest in what the job entails, and shows that you have a true sense of responsibility. Asking about benefits and perks can tend to make it look like that i sthe most important thing to you.

This has always worked for me.

Guys, thank you so much for all of the great replies.

I am headed into my normal office right now, I will report back this afternoon after the interview has ended.

Here's to it!

Acknowledge the cut when you go in and make light of it. I have cats and volunteer for an animal charity, sometimes  I have scratches on my hands and I say straight away and people say "Oh I did wonder". it's done and dusted and they can focus on your answers not "I wonder how he got that"

In answering any questions in the interview breakdown your answer into three parts.

* What did I do?
* How did I do it?
* What was the end result / benefit / what difference did it make?

and try not to break wind loudly, that's normally a no no

Guys, just wanted to thank everyone for the kind, encouraging words.

I NAILED the interview. Definitely expecting to land the position.

Crossing fingers and hope to find out this week!

Sounds good, but to reiterate what Doug referred to above---get that thank you note out NOW.  Two  things will be accomplished--you demonstrate that you have good business manners--and that's important, and 2--you bring your name to the top of their memory when they read it and that never hurts to close the deal.

I fired out the thank you email, a very nicely written, short, but not too short, but very to the point and didn't forget to let them know how much of a positive impact that I believe I will have on the company.

Here's hoping! Worst case scenario, I still have a job (which I'm at now) and I can continue to gain income and hopefully scenes change here, or I'll get more interviews elsewhere!

Im curious if being sly was mentioned at all at your interview ?  Did you feel it affected how they perceived you in any way ?

Hi all!

Sly was not mentioned at all during the interview other than one of the female interviewers saying she liked my head to which I just gave a smile and said "why thank you".

Unfortunately, I got my hopes up yesterday when they called me and thanked me personally for coming in and asking if I was still interested in the position..(just to follow up). I wake up to an email this morning (an automated email, at that), saying they decided to go another direction.

Confused the hell out of me, but no big deal, I still have a current job and I'll continue my search. Thanks once again guys, I'll do the next interview I have the SAME exact way because it was 100% perfect (with your tips of course).

I guess I wasn't hipster enough for them? Knew I should have broken out the flannel!....

Sorry to hear that. Look at the positive though, you had practice with this interview so that you can be that much better at the next one. Good luck.

The cold, automated email has become so common.

A colleague has been working diligently to get into a new company. He's had multiple interviews and was told early on that they may simply no longer contact or respond to him. No hard feelings, just accept that if that happens we're no longer interested.

As it turns out after his last interview, which went really well, he received an email from the interviewer that they were "going in a different direction." It was clearly a form letter - nothing personal in it.

People are becoming so inconsequential these days.

I'd take the cold, impersonal email. These, days I find that if they "go in a different direction" you just cease to exist.

Dislike! But, like you said, at least you still have a job.
