Title: A Word of Warning Re:Knock Off Blades.
Post by: JDog on September 21, 2007, 03:06:42 AM
I broke a cardinal rule in headshaving. I sacrificed quality for quantity and paid the price.

A few weeks ago while grocery shopping I noticed some Atra type knock off generic blades.10 for 2.50. Brought them home and they fit the Atra HB adaptor. Used one in the shower that night and got a pretty decent shave with it but I always usually do a 2nd shave at the sink for touch ups with my Fusion.

Tonight I lathered up the last of my KOS Alpha Gel and took the HB with the knock off Atra to my dome. Seemed okay for the 1st few minutes. Little drag, felt smooth. But then it started stinging after about 5 minutes. I put my hand there ,no blood.

Upon exiting the shower and looking in the mirror I found that this piece of crap blade had cut my head in about 30 places.Granted most were very small nicks but nonetheless a massive pain in the ass.

What did I learn.

ONLY USE THE REAL THING. CHEAP BLADES EQUALS HORRIBLE HEADSHAVE :-[

Bro that looks bad man. I think I fell victim to buying fake Fusion Power blades from ebay because the lubrastrip came off after one shave and it just isn't a close shave

Jeez, that's gotta hurt JDog!  You just sealed it for me as far as using the generic's on my head.
I use the Atra copy for my face, which isn't bad, but no way is it going near the noggin'!.
You probably should have tossed that sucker out of the shower after feeling the stinging.
I feel for ya, bro.

Ya I just was the DUMBASS TODAY and bought the personna ones and on the even spots of my head the blade would pass right over it like it was smooth I'm talking like 5 passes trying to get the spot of scruff and I'm like what the hell!Tons of drag also I made 3 stripes total across my head and was scared crapless that I was gonna nick and that was the 3 blade ones, felt like a potato peeler,I immediately threw my gillette sensor 3's back on and finished.never again! The blades brand new felt like they had a month use on them ! :Xo!

Warhawk, just to let you know, I got a big thumbs up today on the Fusion as a head shaving razor.
I was in Walgreen's picking up a HB classic and some atra refills, when the very attractive salesgirl asked me if I've ever used the Fusion. I told her I hadn't and that I love the HB.
She recommended the Fusion highly, and said most of the customers who shave their head said it is excellent. I guess I'm going to have to give it a spin. But first I'm going to compare the HB Classic to the Sport. I know you're a devout Fusion guy and thought you would like hearing that it got big kudos.   O0

I had less than perfect results with Personna once, but I tried them again and have not really had any problems since.  And I can get several weeks on one blade.  It is worth a try in my opinion to try a generic.  You can even get a bad blade from the name brands once in a while, so don't be totally scared off to give it a try... my 2 cents.

I'm glad you took the bullet for all us newbies in the world of the clean dome. I've only been at this for a few weeks and have been very leary to try some thing off brand. I'm sorry you had to teach us new guys a lesson the hard way.
