hey guys, I am getting ever more close to being totallly sly ... I reallly am ... now have a .50 buzz on sides and #1 on the crown... VERY close, and at initial glance looks shaved. (I'd post a pic, but I promised not to post one again till I'm totally sly) One thing i'm beginning to wonder; how hard is it to keep a smooth look; especially for the sides and back? I'm quite thin on top/crown, but the sides/back are VERY thick. How hard is it to keep it really clean? How irritating to the skin is it? I'm thinking that "my" look might be to go for a clipper shave, rather than using a razor and lather every day. (but I'd love to try razor shaving at least for a while.) Not sure how smooth or rough a clipper shave might be.
Any and all opinions/ insights etc. are welcome

have you looked at the MAJOR changes some of our newbie frineds have gone through...and YOU'RE worrried about it, even before going for it?
Shave your dome clean every other day, THAT will be easier than a clipper shave...

Well BaldAndre...something has got to push him over the edge and if that doesnt work...then I think there are a lot of guys in trouble in here because they gonna see the Slymeister in a Thong! LOL....dont think I will do it do ya? Hell Im up for some good humor..so why the hell not. LOL Just tryin to decide if I am gonna wear the blue or yellow one...or the one that is see thru LOL

John, my experience is that keeping it buzzed is harder than shaving. Buzzed at .50 is like 2 days growth. Go for it!!!

Here's the deal guys .... give me till the end of the month. HONEST. I've got some stuff to do places to go over the next two weeks where I'm to be honest; just too shy to show up sly. But this gradual approach seems to be working; both for me and my wife. Buzzing myself the other day; I took the .50 attachement way up close to the crown .... sides are practically shaved. My wife isn't saying much, which to me is a sign she is accepting it, and other non-verbal signs :@` show she may actually be liking it (though she'll never admit it) . anyway; that 's a MAJOR obstacle out of the way. So, my sly friends, give me just a little more time; and TIMM..... no thong >>> P L E E E E E E Z Z Z Z Z E E E E .....! ! !

JOHN...dotn be mad when I say this....YOU ARE A PANSY! Forget the places you got to go to...what you gonna do shave your head bald and hide out in your house for 2 days. Actually what you are doing is saying you are embarassed to be a SLY BRO! So what does that say to all of us who are? Not liek you are going out for a sex change...come on John...I am still holding up to my word...you have about 23 hours left to get the job done.....you mentioned at the end of the month you had places to be at? So the rest of the year you dont have to be anywhere?? John I am not trying to sound mean or cruel...but this has got to stop...its liek gettin into a ice cold pool..yes it is shocking at first but after a few minutes it makes you feel all warm and comfy. I had a full head of hair with the starting signs of a receeding hair line. When I first shved mine bald...while doign it I was like wtf am i doing? It was too late to turn back, I had already had the racing strip downt he middle of my head. After about 10 minutes of shaving it off I stood in the mirror long enough to realize ..HEY I AM THE HOTTEST STUD ON THE BLOCK....SO FOR WHAT EVER REASON YOU ARE HOLDING BACK JOHN,.......ITS NOT GOING TO FLY HERE! YOU JUST NEED TO GROW A COUPLE OF NUTS AND BE THE MAN YOU WERE MEANT TO BE! GO SLY BRO"S!

John, don't worry about little things like the thickness of your hair. Hell, I'm BBC with fairly thick hair. Irritation from shaving can be reduced to the minimum if not totally eliminated by using decent products before and after the shave. In particular using HeadSlick before reduces friction to zero. I had some problems with post shave irriration but it disappears completely using the Bald Guyz Moisturizing gel. Other guys use aloe based lotions. Come on man...go for it...no matter where you go in life you are going so meet someone who hasn't seen you sly. Guess what, if there are family, friends, or coworkers, the odds are enormously in your favor that they will find the sly you awesome. If they are strangers...what do you really care, so long as YOU are happy. The sooner you take the plunge the sooner you can get on with your life and avoid all of this anxiety. Do it now...your wife as you say seems to like the changes and you know you have all of our support. O0

Not embarrassed. A lot of my personal psychological issues have to do with a kind of TERROR of being the center of attention, esp. when issues of masculinity are concerned. I've read posts in here from guys who have mulled over headshaving for one or two years. So give me a little more time. ... Like I'm saying ... till the end of the month. It is going to give me great pleasure to show all you sly brothers pics taken after my first shave. You've all given me a lot of support ( and 'tough love' --"ouch" to Andre and Timm ...) and I would n't have gotten THIS far without you guys. And since I've been taking so long, going sly may end up being as much as a 'non- event' with you guys as everyone says it is with the world at large.

I wholeheartedly agree. I tried clipper shaving -- for about 2 or 3 days -- and found that it is much easier to shave with the blade.

John, I totally understand how you feel -- been there, done that. But you really have no idea how very close you are at .50. You have time to shave it and still grow it back to where you are before your commitments. It will only take about 24 to 36 hours to grow back. So, if you want a sneak preview, now's the time to go for it. O:O
P.S. I don't want to see photos of any member of this group in a thong, with the notable exceptions of MagmaBabe and Hot Cajun. ;D

Hey John, I hear ya on your fears about being the center of attention. The thing of it is, your current look of .50 is going to be the same in the eyes of your friends/family as completely slick. But, the purpose of this site is to give you confidence in your appearance, completely sly or not.
I recommend that you give yourself a shave when you have a day to let it grow back. This will give you a sneak peak into your confidence level with a completely shaved head. If you're not comfortable, you'll be back in 24 hours.

Sniff, Sniff ... yeah; Timm, you did make me feel bad. A real kick in the balls (what I have of them, anyway,) and richly deserved. ... These last posts HAVE pushed me over the edge. Like I said in my earlier ones; I am going to do the deed; but (sorry guys) AFTER this big event coming up in my life; It will be cool enuf facing them with my short buzz ( I DO plan on giving myself a .50 ALL OVER, top included, before going to the event) ... I know, it's almost a shave; but I need to take these baby steps.
Also ; I'm promising ; no more posts from me till I make the big announcement .... look for it around July 23.

john..i say just keep it buzzed and dont worry about shaving for atleast another 5 yrs...by then you will have become really comfortable and shaving that last .5 will wont even be an issue....the buzzed looks suits you probably just as well as a shaved look will suit you....it will just be a matter of what you think is easier to maintain at that point.

My prediction is that you'll get a lot of compliments about the short buzz -- and that a few people will refer to it as a shaved head; most people don't make any distinction between a little stubble and a clean-shaven dome. This will make it all the easier for you when you do decide to shave it. And when you do, you'll have a feeling of extreme satisfaction at having confronted your fear and done what you wanted to do. That first shave is a lot of fun -- exciting and a little scary, like riding a rollercoaster, but extremely gratifying all that the same time. I wish I could experience that feeling again.

I am a very caring person adn I would go out of my way to do anything for anyone. John, you'll have to forgive us, but we're all your friends here. This is like the anticipation of an impending birth for us, and you're 3 weeks overdue. We know how thrilled you will be once you do it, and we'll all be happy for you. I know when I saw your first avatar (very small and not real clear if I recall), I thought you were already shaved until I caught on from your posts that you hadn't done it yet. You're just so close right now that except for you, it will probably be a non-event to everyone else. Don't worry about being the center of attention. The sly look is so common that most people don't give it a second thought. If anyone notices, it will probably be the combover dudes who are jealous. If I were a gambling man, I would bet money that when you finally do it, you will be so relieved and will look back and shake your head at all of the anguish that you've been putting yourself through. I have a 12 pack in the fridge, so don't make me wait much longer. B33r

That is a GREAT analogy ... my wife was a couple weeks overdue with our first (and only) and it was gruelling ...

Thanks, Tyler for the 'green light.' Now that you mention it; I am wondering about my first razor shave. One thing i've been thinking about is letting a barber do it; just for the experience. But one thing I've heard that is that barbers who razor shave often don't use very good 'products'; i.e. harsh soaps. , etc. So maybe it's better to do it yourself; using headslick, aloe gel afterwards, etc.?
Also; for the wet razor shave do you recommend using a fresh , unused blade? I have a fusion razor (non-battery) but the blade has been used quite a bit (for shaving my neck/throat under my beard. I often find when I shave there with a fresh blade I bleed a lot ((well; a little, in spots); so I'm wondering, would a slightly used blade be better, or is it 'the sharper the better'? The hair on the sides/back of my head is much thicker than my beard.
Hope this doesn't seem like a petty question, or that it sounds like i am chickening out. I just want to get the best possible results . And after all, the topic here IS "headshaving."

this is excactly what we are here for. i would use a fresh blade or do some research about barbers. a well used blade will probably make the whole process a nightmare. just take your time brother. ask all the questions you want.

John I would use a fresh blade. First of all your head is not use to having a razor go acrossed it. So a sharp fresh blade would glide easier thru it. Just main thing to remember and I think alot of us guys stress it alot to all the new guys...DO NOT USE A LOT OF PRESSURE. It may take you 20 minutes or so on your first time but go really slow. and you will have to shave in different directions. such as going up from the back and back from the front towards the crown. You dotn have a whole lot on top so that should be the easy part. When shaving also use the other hand ..in my case my left hand...feel around on your head in different directions and you will find smoe stubble..just go back over those. Once you get past the first 2 or 3 shaves you will do a good job and the process will speed up some.. Just remembr...GO SLOW! dotn rush it or you will get nicks and razor burn. I found out the hard way one day GOOD LUCK JOHN

First of all, do what make you the happiest and most comfortable. I can totally understand your hesisitation about taking the plunge. I was where you are 10 years ago. I will say that I have grown it back and shaved it again in those 10 years. But I know that sly is going to be my primary style. As for me, I have a bit more hair than you. So some didn't understand when I first shaved it off as I was just thinning at the temples at first. Now that it is thinning all over it is more acceptable. So I am just trying to say that my guess is that no one will give you a bad time when you shave it off! You WILL rock the sly look dude!

john... i agree w/ the other brahs..... use a fresh blade. i use the regular fusion as well. it is a gr8 razor and keeps me the smoothest. good luck w/ your 1st official shaving of the dome. asks more question if u need 2. we r here 4 ya.

John, I agree, use a new blade. I suggest you use the same razor you are used to. Don't start off with a different make or model. That has been my experience.

Just gave myself an all-over, .50 buzz before going to my conference tomorrow; and couldn't resist posting a pic. It's "almost" there, and I can't wait to do a buzz with no guard and then a razor shave. It is so close now that there is hardly any difference. Now I have to say I'm looking forward to meeting new people and seeing old aquaintences at this conference; and their reactions to my 'shaved head" ( I know, it's not fully shaved, but pretty close). ... my confidence is building and building, and I think that when I go sly about 10 days from now I will REALLY be ready.

John, you look awsome. And just like me, your hair is so light and fine that in the pic you look totally bald and the only one that will notice a substantial difference with the have is you. Just wait till you feel what it is like to be smooth. And that sensation the first couple of days where your scalp still feels sorta numb. You're going to love it.

O0 O0 O0 John, you look super--as I knew you would. Have you given up glasses and switched to contacts? As to the blade, I have found that a RELATIVELY (two day old) blade is best. It's broken in but still sharp. I use a Fusion non-battery + Fusion gel. The most I get out of one blade is a week. Godspeed, Professor Melon

Thanks, guys, and thanks for the insight on the blade, Prof. (no, don't have contacts, so my 'street look' is going to be with glasses). As I said earlier, I always get cuts with a new blade when I shave my throat/neck. Never liked shaving my face, but as one brother (sorry, I forget who) mentioned, head vs. face shaving is a totally different thing. I really am looking forward (with more and more excitement and less and less apprehension/fear) to going sly.

As for the blade: don't worry, it's easier to shave the dome than the beard
cause the skin is smoother than the throat skin, so you can use fresh blade
without worrying about it, just be careful not to push too hard and not to
slide the razor sideways.

I have to say that when you took your remaining hair down to that short buzz, you went from looking like the librarian at the college library to some bouncer that I wouldn't want to mess with! You got the confidence level going up I see! By the way, you will look great with the shaved head and full beard. You might want to consider getting a Harley now! Anyway, great to see some progress!

Regular Fusion (non-battery), and Fusion Gel. I see that HeadSlick (matte) contains mineral oil and aloe; wo will use a little olive oil and aloe vera gel when finished. Do any of you guys use a similar kind of "homemade" version of Headslick/ afterhshave, etc. ?
Had a good time at my conference (in beautiful Ottawa). Nobody made any reference at all to the short buzz. So yeah; I agree with everyone that the headshave will be basically a non-event to everyone but me.

Hey just returned from Florida..jumped on here to check out the progress report...JOHN! BUDDY! youre almost there..looks awesome. Just waiting for the final slick report from you. I say do it and go all the way dude. Told you the anticipation is worse than actually doing it...and no one made you feel uncomfortable either. While I was in FLorida I got alot of stares...but I dont think it was stares of ..WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR? it was more liek...now there is a cool dude type of stare. Post some more pics John....we all would liek to see em
