Title: Looking Different To Your Age
Post by: Wiremu on August 21, 2018, 12:00:52 AM
Does anybody here who is BBC regularly get told they look older or younger due to being bald?

I've had a mixture of both.

My wife says I look way older and should grow my hair back (although she just wants me to go for the Statham-type stubble and that ain't going to happen).
But a couple of days ago I met a woman who insisted that I was the same age as her son. I asked how old her son was and she replied 32. I laughed and said I was 12 years older but she didn't believe me. She said the BBC made me look younger.

I think there'd be a variety of lifestyle factors that come into play before lack of hair, including protecting skin from the sun (important in Perth), drinking lots of water, moisturising, and perhaps overall demeanour and attitude.

Interested to hear others thoughts.

Yes, many people can't believe I'm nearly 65. Shaving my snow white hair makes a difference, even though my beard is white.

Noting ages a person more than smoking and heavy drinking. I have a sister and brother that look much older than their age.

If I shave my beard off I will get carded regularly. Since my beard is mostly grey I look older with the beard.

Isn't it strange that people you don't know say you look younger while people you do know say you look older? That is exactly what I've noticed.

Edit: Did quote wrong. Will have to figure that out.

I think young guys (less than 30) with a shaved head can look older, especially if they have some facial hair to go with it.  But older guys, over 40, look younger.  I am often told that I look 10 to 15 years younger than I am, and nobody believes me when I tell them I am retired.

I’ve tried to take care of myself so I could look younger than my actual age but I don’t think it is working. I look a lot older than I did just a few years ago. A lot of that is due to my beard getting greyer but my skin is also showing the ravages of time.

I don’t know how old people who don’t know my age think I am, but when people see picture of me with hair and no beard, they often seem shocked and I don’t usually get the impression that think my current look is an improvement.

I generally think that having my head shaved, or tightly clipped, makes me look younger, as I am pretty bald on top. Like others have said, I try to take good care of myself and people generally think that I am younger than my age (pre-beard growth).  I recently let my beard grow for 2 months while recuperating from hand surgery. It's all white, as is the #1 stubble on my head. I have grown a full beard; had it very slightly trimmed and shaped only twice after the first 5 weeks. A friend said that it looked good, but made me look "older". Then he said, but we are all getting "older". I don't think that my full white beard makes me look as old as, say 5 days of white stubble on my face does.  I'll be interested to see what more people think.  I don't know if I will keep it once I can use that arm again.

Razor, I think your beard looks great.

Us guys with white hair look much younger with it all shaved off. Another benefit of shaving off white hair is having absolutely no shadow!

Thanks Scooby, I've tried numerous times to grow my hair back, but can't seem to get beyond 5 or 6 weeks. I miss being the guy with the shaved head. I like how I look bald, and how a smooth head feels. I even enjoy the daily routine of shaving. I guess after 5 years, I'm hooked!

I was often offered the Sr Citizen discount when I was in my mid 40's with gray/white hair.  Since going sly at around age 50, and now almost 57, I have never been offered the discount.

To me you appear to be in your 30s so Count Your blessings and maybe you could grow your stubble for 3 or 4 days just to give your wife that little extra something. LOL there could be a dividend with that.

Well I look now different to my age and have been even before my hairloss kicked in, when I was 16 people assumed I was 21. Now because of the buzzcut, facial hair (I have quite good coverage), I am assumed to be 42 (while I am 20 lmao). My buzzcut is very light, because I have blonde hair. Will going sly make me look younger?

People tend to guess our age by our hair or lack of it.  If a guy's hair is grey or thinning, they assume the guy is older.  I don't know how shaving fits into the mix so I have nothing to else to say about that.  My wife told me I look younger since I shaved it off but others might think I look older but judging by the state of our society, I don't really care.  I just shave because I can't stand having hair on my head.

I started to go grey at 21 yo. Of course, my ex-wife was a hair stylist, so she often colored it. By the time I was 35, I was almost completely grey, and I hated it! Shaved heads were very rare then, so I never considered shaving my head. I guess that's one of the best things about wearing a shaved head now, not having that white hair!

And @clint902 , another advantage of shaving with grey hair is we don't have any shadow at all. Just a smooth, shiny, evenly tanned dome!

Shaving my head definitely makes me look older than I am. I’m 32, but it makes me look like I’m in my late 30s/early 40s. However, I think I look exactly the same age now as I did four years ago when I first went fully shaved bald.

I shave my head to get rid of the grey …. But I’m mostly silver now. I hate it when the silver stubble starts peeking through if I skip a couple days of shaving. It looks like a fungus on my head. All the motivation to take out the razor. I think my grey beard though is a giveaway on my age so I keep it short. I may look younger but i thinks its more due to taking care of my skin. Always use sun screen and a moisturizer. Wear a boonie hat in the sun.  And drink more water.

Mine is worse, my hair (what is left of it) is silver/grey at the sides, but has a U-shaped stripe that is till dark brown... looks... absurd... so I shave it all, and the hair system is 90% silver/grey.

I made a mistake of growing out. I have 1cm hair right now and my parents insist that I grow out because I still 'have hair' when it is diffused as hell lmao, they wanted to see how it grows out and they are happy with the result, whereas I am not. The worst thing is, they react with anger for everytime I mention shaving head, telling me that I am obsessed about it and thought that when I buzz it I will shut up and never mention my hair again. (they thought that I will buzz only once and then grow out lmao).

Yes, you see, that's exactly why we tell you to commit to staying shaved for 30 days! It gives you and others time to get used to your new haircut. Maybe you should take a break from this whole headshaving thing, and in a few years you will be older and ready to try it again.

I definitely look older bald.  The white/grey beard doesn't help either.  I prefer the feeling of being clean shaven even though I know I look better with the horseshoe flattop.

IMO, you look the same age-wise with the flattop or sly.  BTW, did you color it in the third photo?  Is the darker flattop your natural color?

@Semi-Sly , you can still pull off the flattop, but it's getting a bit thin! I think you actually look younger shaved bald.

You probably remember I was wearing a flattop when I grew my hair back several times. One reason I went back to shaving was that I felt a flattop made me look older. I think it is because we grew up in the era when long hair was the norm, and only old grandpa's wore a grey flattop!

But I agree that a smooth shaved head feels awesome and looks clean.

My natural color is somewhere in between some of my hair is white some of it is the color of the deadmau5 the gray brownish look so I either darken it with the darkening shampoo if you see in the top photo or if the bleach a pure white do you see in the bottom photo

@Semi-Sly , I ran into a guy at a carshow yesterday with the most perfectly cut grey flattop I've ever seen! He was talking to me about my car, so I just had to ask him who his barber is. Turns out it's a gal at my neighborhood barber.

So, I hadn't shaved for 3 days, and I think I will try to grow out my hair so I can try her. I figure by December I will be able to get a nice short flattop. Hope I can make it that long without shaving!

Now tbh I might be closer to going sly than ever. People seeing I buzz from that 1cm hair to 5mm, now to 3mm, encourage me to shave it all off. On photos I look like a sly guy and I like that look. I have been compared to Lex Luthor and I think it's the best compliment you can get as a bald guy. I just need to find that rebellious soul that made me buzz to 3mm and just shave with no guard. WISH ME LUCK

Also, related to topic, people tell me I look older not only because of my head but also because of my fashion style which seems to be outdated lmao. I like that style but I am not sure whether I should try to wear clothes that fit my age

It seems like just about everyone complains about something these days.  If you do something to please one group, you'll piss off another group of people so there's no winning.  I just wear my kakies, a colored T-shirt and sunglasses and that's it.  If anyone don't like my look then don't look.  It's not possible to please everyone so there's no point in trying.  It's all about what you're happy with so don't worry about what others think.  It just doesn't matter as long as you're happy with yourself.

Well I am living temporarily in Fort Lauderdale Florida for two months went to get my Flattop tuneup on Saturday and the guy really screwed up one side of it and totally mode off one of the corners.

I don’t know why nobody book couple of guys and Chicago seem to know how to do a really good Flattop anymore!!!!

It is a  good thing I’m planning on going back to ball for the winter

Maybe cutting a flattop is no longer part of their training.  Don't you guys need some sort of license to cut hair?  I've had my share of bad haircuts so I just do it myself.
Title: Re: Looking Different To Your Age
Post by: reddog on October 05, 2021, 08:34:17 AM
@clint902 , yes, barbers are licensed here. And yes, they attempt to train them on flattops. A few get the hang of it, but because it is not a popular haircut, I don't think very many get enough experience cutting them. So, a very small percentage become really good at cutting a perfect flattop. I think the best way to find one is if you see a guy with an excellent cut, is to ask them who their barber is.

I've been BBC (mostly, I'll explain) for over 20 years. 5-10 years ago I tried to grow my hair back with the intention of an eventual ponytail. When my hair got to be about 1/2 inch long it actually made me look about 20 years older than my age at that time. I had no noticeable hair on top and the sides and back were solid gray.
