Title: I remember when....
Post by: schro on January 15, 2008, 06:36:48 AM
Frosty's post about the downfall of an american institution gave me this idea....

I know a lot of us comment on how things used to be (me included). I've seen many topics that talk about the "good ol days".
Now let's start a thread about it. I'll start, (keeping it non-political)...

I remember when I could fill up my gas tank for under $10.

Good topic, Schro.  Now from a trip down memory lane......ahhhhh

I joke about this to my kids when we go to McDonalds.  I remember when I was a kid and it was a big deal to go to McDonald's for a Big Mac.  I think they were 50 cents.   The whole family could eat for under $5.

I remember when parents could let their kids go play in the neighborhood till the street lights came on, and didn't have to worry about someone trying to abduct them.

I remember walking and riding bikes to school.  If there was an after school fight....well that was all it was....a fight...no charges being pressed or authorities called.
I remember Penny candy ...when it was a penny.
I remember cokes when they came in the green glass bottle....and I also remember when they first came out with 20 oz pop bottles, the bottle wrapped in like a styrofoam label....yeah you remember those....and they cost 50cents
I remember as a kid the upright pop machines..where you put the money in and pulled the bottle out...well we always walked around with a bottle opener....one would bend down with their mouth just below the bottle opening while the other would pop the top! LOL......see im not so innocent here....
I remember saturday morning cartoons...when they were cartoons....Bugs Bunny and Road Runner show....Grape Ape...Fat Albert,  Tom and Jerry, Casper, Woodie Woodpecker, Popeye ...the list could go on and on here.
I remember when it was awesome to watch jiffy pop on the stove top and seeing the aluminum foil bubble!...lol
I remember not being able to wait until it was Friday as a child.  It was Pay day for my parents and we got to do our ONCE A WEEK EATING OUT!
I remember wearing those long tube socks with the colored strips up to our knees...
I actually owned a pair of Bell Bottoms...
Light Brights were always fun...
I remember getting mad when I would play a record and only to find out it skips because my brother scratched the record...
Wow...the memories...

Tim's NOT old, just a little forgetful at times.
SlickinKC do you remember doing your homework by gaslight?
This thread sure reminds me of Bucky Covington's song, "A Different World".
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3AlrFOBmdVI

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead-based paint
No childproof lids
No seatbelts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets
and still here we are
Still here we are

We got daddy's belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside
Playing outside

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same everyday
the pledge of allegiance, then someone would pray
not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed but that was alright
We turned out alright

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

No bottled water
We'd drink from a garden hose
And every Sunday,
All the stores were closed.

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

It was a different world

I remember when you used to be able to get a free tootsie pop if you got one with the full Indian on the wrapper.
I remember when there was a mad rush to buy Garbage Pail Kids collectors cards.
I remember when the value of the baseball card was determined by a price guide and you didn't have to send your card in to get "rated"

Though, I did have a history professor say "There's no such thing as the good ol' days" and then he'd go into about 100 reasons why...

I remember riding bikes all day long in the summertime... ride to friends house, ride to the public pool and swim, ride to 7-11 for a slurpee, to friends house for some snacks and tv, back out to do some BMX jumpin, go shoot some hoop, end up in a park or something when it finally started to get dark at 9:00 ....

Damn I had alot of energy back then.

I remember cars being made out of metal.

AC/DC and Van Halen were new.

Concert Tees you could only get at concerts.

Skateboards going from banana boards to wide 10" skate park boards and back.

The Gong Show w/ the unknown comic.

The Oakland raiders being REALLY hardcore with John Madden coaching and Ken Stabler at QB.

Mom and pop record stores.

Those pants that older girls wore that had the zipper front to back that we would always imagine unzipping all the way (because they did "it").

The Atari 2600 being high tech.

I remember getting new clothes for school meant a trip to Sears for some TOUGHSKINS. Remember those? They had like the double reinforced knees you couldn't wear out and they were stiff as a board for the first 20 washings. They came in Husky and Slim fit. I don't think I've worn a piece of clothing from Sears since. Probably 30 years ago.

Nostalgia and Reflection are big influences in my songwriting.

Yeah man, thats where your woman would ride.  >:D

Warhawk, hell yeah... Evel Knievel was a HUGE influence on me throughout my life... from jumping my banana seat bike to BMX... Motocross, skateboarding, snowboarding, mountain bikeing, etc...

He is always ranked the number one badass regardless of who is doing double backflips on a motocross bike these days.

You guys have covered a lot of ground, and I remember 95% of all of it.  I remember...

1) burning leaves in the fall
2) playing 'Kick the Can' after dark
3) making up our own games in the car on vacations -- no electronic games
4) getting a great public education from teachers who actually taught the basics and weren't concerned about being your friend and expected (and usually deserved) your respect (sorry, a little political on that one)
5) thinking it was a big deal to go downtown (when there was a downtown) on the bus to go to the Five and Dime, Donut Shop (independently owned), and the library using my library card -- loved the sound the machine used to make printing the due date
6) my all-in-one record player/radio with a manual tuning dial

Great topic... makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I remember when EVERYONE went to the bank of fridays...

you had to have your cash for the weekends...

no atms, no credit cards ( for most average folks) and a lot of places didn't take checks!

This was thru the eyes of a young kid watching a frustrated dad!

Yes Warhawk, I had the best of the best...and Im proud to say that.  My dad worked hard to provide for his family, even if it meant tinkering with bicycles.  It wasnt anything to be sitting at the table for supper adn we get a knock at the door and some kid ( most likely one that i went to school with) would have his bike wiht a flat tire...wanting my dad to fix it for him so he could get home before his curfew.  Like always my dad would say step inside sit down with us have a glass of koolaid and when he was done eating he would go out and fix the flat.
I think everyone goes thru the "memory" period sometime in their life.  Always wanting how it was back then.  Here we are in a society who is always wanting bigger and better....but deep down inside all of us....we want the "Back Then".  I know I do, especially for my kids.  I really think our kids would be more well behaved, better educated and truely know what life is all about if they could for a short period of time....experience what we had back when we were younger.  I know folks older than we are could sit here adn say the same thing about us.  It just seems like there should be an end to making this better or improving that....and etc.  Before long all we will have to do is just push a button from our bed in the morning and everythign for the day will be done at that instant....dont laugh...it could happen.

I still have my Apple Macintosh Plus from 1986.  It had a full megabyte of memory, which was a huge deal at the time.  It had no hard drive -- if you wanted one you had to purchase it separately and they were not cheap.  It's sitting on a shelf in my garage ever since my dad told me he was going to throw it away if I didn't get it out of his basement.  I just can't part with it for some reason.  I thought I was the only person in the world to still have one of those, until I helped my best friend move a couple of months ago and he had his older brother's Mac from 1983.   ;D

I also still have my first VHS VCR that I got for my birthday in 1984. It still works, but I stopped using a few years ago because it didn't have a wireless remote and the wired one that came with it didn't work anymore.

I remember spending the afternoon collecting bottles on the side of the road to return to the store and spending the money on a ice cold nugrape in a bottle that cost 10 cents and eating pushups and drumstick ice creams!
I remember the evil kenival motor cycle that would jump the evil kenival van!
I remember battleing GI Joe with the invicible stretch armstrong
I remember my mother driving me to the 7-11 in the volkeswagon bug and sending me in (5 years old) to buy things!
I remember leaving chicken necks in the sun for a day and then tying a string on one end and a stick on the other, then mom would take my brother and I to the beach not to play, but to catch crabs for dinner!
I remember watching ultra-man in the mornings at a neighbors house while we waiting for the school bus to arrive!
I remember building a fort in the woods and making bows and arrows and spears from sticks to battle other kids with as we protected our fort.
I remember playing stick ball/half rubber with the kids from the neighborhood in the middle of the street!
I remember getting the Roy Clark guitar lesson book with stickers for the fret board- Also remember watching Hee-Haw and Gomer Pyle and Sonny and Cher as a family!
I remember my comic book collection took up three of my dresser drawers!

Wow, the things that just pop in your head....

Geeze, you guyz r young !  ya better sit down , I REMEMBER : the Kennedy funeral with the cassons and the horse drawn funeral cart ,watching on our black n white tv with rabbit ears  Jack Ruby shooting James Earl Ray in the basement of the police headquaters, Trains around the bottom of our christmas tree, the Lawerence Welk show "and a onea and a twoa" ol bakelight 78rpm records , our old 4door chevy with the mohair seats ,THOSE were the "cats ass" the inline6 with the glass fuel filters and the 1 ply toilet paper oil filter , vacume operated windshield wipers,  pull out THROTTLE on the dash to warm up the car, or a poormans cruise control, "HONEST BOX"'s when the store was closed ya just took what ya needed and left the $ in the "honest box" by the door,  BEFORE slurpee's there was MR. ICEY . I REMEMBER when McDonalds signs said "over 5000 sold"not 1 BILLION.  Milk was delivered to your "box" with a paper cap, You were "in",  if you had a pair of white hightop Converse all stars,  or Your POPS would take ya to the barbershop and let ya have a waterfall',  ducktail,or a  flattop, that ya had to use crewcut wax on . IF you were standing on the corner after dark and ya heard a loud BANG ya didnt run cuz ya knew it was ol man johnson hadnt got the hang of advancing the timing on his flathead harley and it was just a BACKFIRE , NOT a gunshot. When kids could tell ya WHO lived where, how many kids where their dad worked and IF they had a car, FOR BLOCKS AROUND !  REMEMBER when the family car ONLY came out on sunday and your pops rode the bus back n forth to work and the bus ride was 10/25cents. You used to be able to buy "recaps" for your car for about 2$  the milkman delivered milk n eggs thru a hole in the house and right into the back of the ICEBOX that you actually had to put BLOCKICE in , wringer washers that you had to pick up the clothes and run them thru the "wringer" that swiveled over the top THEN you knew what it meant to have "YOUR BUTT IN THE WRINGER" !   CHURCH's doors were open 24/7 to help people in need , the lunchbars at F.W.WOOLWORTH and S.S. KRESSEGE where you got REAL "soda"pop served in papercones standing tall in chrome holders , pop coolers that you reached down into and had a poptop opener on the end and the "honestbox"to pay for your "soda", the neighbor kids would FIGHT to see who would get to push the mailmans cart with the 2 wheels in the back 1 in the front and leather saddlebags. Penny loafers with the penny in the top. and if you were from the south n yer family was doin better than most... you were "WALKIN IN HIGH COTTON"  cuz you were in the money flow. When ya got gas , ya got your oil checked the windshield washed and a walkaround to check the tires, FOR FREE !!   boy , those WERE the dayz

I remember watching the movie RAD and then building a track in an empty field by our house - took a week to build, but we did it anyway.

I remember when you had a NERF football, basketball, dart gun, and just about everything else, but you only used them indoors because to use it outdoors was wussie.

I remember when the GOTCHA paintball gun came out and Jim McMahon was the spokesperson.

I remember when Laser Tag was HUGE and we'd spend all night running around the neighborhood playing - until the batteries ran out.

I remember when Intertech squirt guns looked like real guns - they were battery powered and came in a 45 caliber model and a 9MM Uzi model and shot a continuous stream of water.

For you BMXers, I remember Skyway Tuff Wheels that you could put in a freezer to "true up" if you bent them.  We'd always take ours to the freezers at the Safeway near by since you couldn't fit a rim in your house freezer.

I remember when a Huffy was a cheap bike you'd get at Sears or Montgomery Wards - now they're good bikes.

I remember Big Wheels and the crash up derbies that we'd have in the neighborhood.  You were cool if you had a siren on yours.

Ahhh, the memories...

You all talkin about playin in the road.  I remember this prank we would pull all the time..didnt matter what time of year..it was always fun.  We would take fishing line...and a black magic marker and paint it black. Tie one end to a stick and the other end to an old purse from mom's closet.  Stuff it up a little bit...but not too much..gotta make it look real.  Throw it out in the street...hide behind a bush and when someone would stop to pick it up...just when they were about to touch it...you yank on that string and run as fast as you can.  LOL. There are two instances that will remain in my mind forever...one is two cars following behind each other...first car sees it...she pulls up ahead and stops.  Second car sees it too she stops before it. They both jump out, the first one hollering..I SEEN IT FIRST I SEEN IT FIRST...they are squabbling over who was gonna get it....actually takin each other to the ground...the 2nd lady reaches for it and we yank it....oh you talk about two ladies getting the sh*t scared out of em...lol.  Second one was city police detective.  He stops his car....opens door and sorta gets out of car to reach down to get it....we yanked the purse...he jumps up hits head on frame of car....pissed off, he flips on his lights and takes off around the block...on his loud speaker...he hollers..OK WHO EVER YOU ARE IF YOU THINK THAT WAS FUNNY SEEING ME HIT MY HEAD WELL YOU WONT THINK IT IS FUNNY ONCE I CATCH YOU!  lol...we run inside and my parents are like why are you so outta breath lol.....we couldnt resist the laughter.  Another time a semi truck pulls up...stops his wheels right on top of the string...gets out cuts the string and takes the purse.  He hollers....HA HA HA.....SEEN THAT DONE THAT!  ...butthole takes off with it.  LOL..we had to hit mom up for another purse.

Tramping around in the woods was always an adventure. There was a large creek that snaked through the wooded areas near my house and we would walk for miles exploring it. I smoked my first cigarette at age 11 back there.

Stole a pack of my grandpas Menthol Light 100's and used to hide them in a hollowed out tree trunk.

WELL... I remeber when we used to play stickball out in front of our hous , BUT..we were a lil older and the old man next door *!d was half blind so just to f**k with him we didnt have a bat OR a ball .  :/O  We'd stand out there and pitch a air ball and hit it with our air bats and hed just sit there and watch us for hours !  !p we'd make jumping catches and diving catches and "almost "get hit by linedrives  ^)$$  some times our AIRBALL even rolled up on his lawn and we'd apoligize for it . Sometimes when there was only a couple of us we'd play 4square in the street with our airball . I remember the FIRST time momz  :px came out on the porch and sat down to watch us , she sat there about 10 minutes watching , BEFORE she realized we didnt have a ball , the look on her face was TRULY a Kodac moment her squinting her eyes more n more and doing the ol neck strech to look jus a lil closer . WE screwed with the ol man cuz he CONSTANTLY called the cops on us , i remember the one time they came out about us playing in the street and our "ball" constantly rollin on his lawn . you shouldve been ther when we explained what we'd been doing to the  :popo that showed up he  thought were all  :/O just shook his head and left !

We had BB gun fights and bottle rocket fights... and it was fun until someone got shot in the eye (or close to it)...

Can't forget the Commodore 64 or 8 inch floppy drives...

Or how about Fizzies... kind of like Alka Seltzer, but fruit flavored.

M*A*S*H

Archie Bunker

George Jefferson

25 cent comics

50 cent gas (and don't forget the gas shortage/lines)

I also remember when Nixon resigned...

Billy Beer

Generic Beer (remember the white cans that said "BEER"?)

We use to stick the pencils in the ceiling tiles...... the gym was more challengeing to stick them!
Pranks...wow we had many. Best was when they first came out with the green trashcans for the neighborhood. We would take fishing string at night and tie one up and then run across the street and tie the other up.  >:D

Ohhh, I remember a kid in the neighborhood got one of those mopeds that you started with pedals like a bike.... we kinda tore it up jumping dirt hills with it... boy was his parents pissed!

Also.. I told my son about the outdoor ed class I had in highschool and we would go canoeing, to a rope tree obstacle course, and even a rifle range and shoot all types of guns. Its amazing how they have banned all that from schools because of the idiot kids today.........

Idiot parents behath idiot kids.

Seems like everything requires a safety belt, kneepads, helmet, and all sorts of signatures and prerequisites.

I know many parents and teachers that dont even bother due to the complications and restrictions. Its a shame that kids will miss out on some of the greatest experiences they could ever have because of a few bad apples.

It is really disappointing that they also no longer have archery as a physical ed activity.

I also remember..if you needed to tell a friend something..you either  1.  got on your bike and you pedaled across town to their house to tell them or 2..you got on the phone to call them.  None of this....hey hurry up i have to get on the computer to send a message to a friend..............or OMG she isnt even on ..how am i gonna tell her....blah blah blah...get up off ya lazy butt..call her or walk over there...she just lives across the street!

Sounds like they fall into the same category as those Nutty Buddy things the ice cream man used to have -- vanilla ice cream with a chocolate coating and nuts on top, wrapped in what looked like an ice cream cone but was actually a piece of cardboard.   :P

I remember having to ride my bike down to the grocery store and buying my dad cigarettes too.  Heck what was I...??  10?  Now you have to be what 18 to even touch them?  Funny how things change....and I remember the brand he smoked too...Merit Ultra Lights....and I think they were 98 cents a pack.  Cuase I would take the two pennies left over and buy some penny candy with it.

Wow, I'm glad to see this thread revitalized! GREAT memories. I don't think I was quite as good as you all!  >:D

I remember:
1.Cutting the forks of one bicycle and then taking them to the local welders and having them welded onto my bike so that I had a REAL chopper!!
2.How I used to hate walking or biking home after dark. There was a huge cementary on the way that used to scare the crap out of me!
3. And the miles I used to ride. I used to ride 8 miles to meet my cousins and go swimming. And then looking for someone that could/would toss my bike in their car and at least get me part way home.
4. I remember lots of just plain gettin' in trouble. Once I stole the change bucket at my uncle's house. I was 11 and had a real criminal mind! I took all the change rolled it up and took it to the bank. That was the one flaw that got me caught. The bank said that since we had no account there I would have to put my name and address on every freakin roll. Who could imagine that the cops would check the banks for large change transactions. Ohhh my dad was so proud that I just stole from his brother!!!!
5. How about drugs......no, I'll stay pg13 and shut my mouth!
6. My first computer an IBM 8088 with a 4200 baud modem. No hard drive. You just put one floppy in one slot that was theOS, then put in the software! THen I upgraded and put in a 20MEG harddrive and thought what in the world will ever use that much space
7. I remember the Kennedy asasination
8. The Moon landing.
9. The little drinks that came in wax "bottles" shaped like guns, bottles,  etc.
10.Hair half way down my back

I remember when kids actually had respect!

When they'd hold open the door as you're going through behind them.  When they'd walk 5 or 6 side by side through a mall but step aside for people.  When they wouldn't talk back to everyone and anyone older than them.  When not every 2nd word out of their mouth wasn't a swear word!

I'm only going to be 28 in Sept. but it seems as though the general level of respect of youth has decreased drastically in the past 10 years.

I remember when:

1. Our public education system actually was an "education system" not an indoctrination system for left wing socialist agendas.

2. Kids saying "sir" and "ma'am" was the rule..not the exception.

3. Playtime ment being outside..with a ball and bat..not all day long on a computer.

4. A man's word and a handshake ment what he said was as good as done.

5. A good old spanking to get a kids attention was an acceptable practice and the thought of "time out" would have been laughed at. (Back then I would have loved it if my Dad had believed in time out..years later I'm glad he didn't.)

6. Fathers and Mothers for the most part didn't walk out on their repsonsibility.

7. People were not "clock watchers" but worked till the work was done.

8.  You didn't utter a word during evening newstime until Walter Conkrite ended the broadcast with the words "and thats the way it is."

9.  Sunday afternoons ment Fried chicken dinners.

10. A treat from Dad was an RC cola and a moonpie.

I remember when MTV actually stood for Music Television.

I remember when you did not have to dial the area code when calling someone.

I remember when watching movies on VHS was the norm.

I remember when people listened to music on cassettes.

I remember when females wearing baggy clothes was just as common and stylish as males.

I remember when high schoolers looked like adults.

I remember when everyone was hyped up over Y2k, hahah.
