as said in the title i love my headblade ATX but today i ordered a straight razor from amazon.....
then i kind of worried my self....
i imagine its a much better shave but is it very dangerous??? i mean, is it easy to cut my self??
any tips or suggestions??
-
What kind of razor did you order?
-
Depending on what SR you bought, it mightn't actually be shave ready yet?
-
Lynchy, does Amazon sell proper straight razors or is this more likely to be a shavette type razor? I know Amazon has shavettes, of varying quality...
-
Kudos to you, brother, for taking this step. Best of luck with the SR.
For me I know that I would get nowhere near as good a shave as with my M5 because I would be scared $h!tless that I would slice my head open to the tune of about 20 stitches. I would apply about zero pressure and end up having to do a re-shave with my stick. Post pics of the first shave.
Again, best of luck.

As a straight razor owner, I think they can give you a decent shave, but your hair must be extremely short for it to be effective. Care is also important as a cut from one of these things.....well, you know,......Good luck!
-
thank you for all your reply, this is what i got: Parker SR1!!!
so will it be a risk for me to do it my self?
-
Looks like a shavette. I know I do all my shopping on google. sometimes amazon does not hacve it all and google pulls from all vendors including amazon.
-
but so smooth sailing,
is this a bad razor???
and are you sure about it being a shavette?? i thought it wasnt :/
-
The Parker SR1 is definitely a shavette. The blades for it are half double edge blades. I had one a year or two back, and although I never used it on my head I was able to get great shaves on my face after a week or two of use.
Check YouTube for videos on shaving with a shavette. I'm sure other people have head shaved with them. They need a very light touch!
-
here is a link i found useful about shavette shaving. it's not your razor he uses but it is a shavette i think. either way this guy is very informative and a great watch.

Excellent point, and you were right!

Don't fret,
This is an excellent way to start as you don't have to stress about honing/stopping. Just snap a blade in half and off you go.
Good luck

ok thanks, i had watched a few video from this guy already... found him on youtube my self!!!
i think i will go to the barber the first time to see and then might do it my self....
-

In some areas it's a risk to go outside and walk the doggie. It's a risk to cross the street. Shaving with a blade like this is a risk as is shaving with a Head Blade or a stick razor (although I think the risk with the SR is more pronounced). But without those willing to take risks where would we be today? Dan Quayle would never have been VP of the US were he not willing to accept the risk that people would find out that as VP he was incapable of winning a 4th grade spelling bee! Did that stop him? Hell NO! He went on and became a great man in spite of his shortcomings.
Sorry about that. I got on a roll and couldn't stop myself. But I'm OK now, I've taken my meds. I feel sleepy, gonna take a napppppppppppppppp
-
thank you buddha,
i will go to the barber on tuesday or Wednesday and see if i like it (which i probably will)
then wait till i get a few days off work and try it!!! the few days off are so the cuts can heal :D
-
Good plan! Tell me how it goes as I am thinking of getting a shavette for my first straight as well
-
so i went to a barber shop but think he did a bad job because my head wasnt as smooth as when i shave it with my headblade ATX + gilette fusion proglide....
in the meantime i also received the straight razor/shavette i ordered and tried it but didnt get a smooth shave.... (maybe i didnt apply enough pressure but i feel like a kind of cut my self in certain places so i just ended up shaving the usual way....
-
haha don't give up. My first 3 or 4 shaves with my DE razor were uneven and a little irritating. Just concentrate on the grain of your hair and the direction it grows while also making sure not to make too many passes. I know with straights especially you can irritate the skin if you over expose it to the blade. Settle for a less-than-perfect shave for a few days and it will be well worth your patience when you achieve a good shave
-
The shavette is going to take some time to get used to, a few weeks at least I'd say (based on daily shaving).
-
but i dont get a smooth shave with it and i really aggravate my skin.... can i then re shave with the regular razor on it if i dont get a good shave?
-
Did the barber give you any tips on how to use the straight razor? If so did he tell you what angle it should be as far as shaving?
-
The SR1 is a shavette, the plus to that is you can simply snap a fresh DE in half (before unwrapping it) and have 2 blades for it. I snagged a Dovo straight razor on eBay for $70. I haven't really used it much because I'm more comfortable with my DE.

I would just like to say quietly as a newbie to head shaving, even just reading this, you guys are TOTALLY FREAKING ME OUT!...

I understand. The thing is though, that shaving with a shavette is a skill that has to be practised. It is not easy but that doesn't mean most people can't master it with practice.
As far as finishing the shave with a regular razor goes, only your skin can tell you that, as it depends exactly how irritated the shavette leaves it. Don't push it too far though...
-
i will wait till next week since i got the whole week off :-\
today i tried to do it just the top of my head and i left a big mark (cut/scratch) at the crown of the head.... so i decided to finish with the headblade ATX....
i use that and the fusion proglide and get a super smooth shave.... do it everyday...
i guess with time (quite a bit of it) i might "master" the straight....
-
this is as good as my shave gets with the ATX plus fusion proglide

Don't be freaked out. The first few weeks are an adjustment/learning period. Just get comfortable with what works for you. We all have different hair types, so there's not really a one size fits all approach to shaving. After about a month of head shaving you can start to branch out and experiment with different techniques.

I'm very comfortable and at peace with my ATX, I began with that and all has been going great with ATX right from the start, which has been a really nice surprise. What is freaking me out is reading this post about Straight Razor shaving. I'm happy right now to just snuggle up with ATX and read about it but not at bedtime or we might have nightmares :o

@Crowbar
I myself am a daily ATX user, Headblade is 1 of the 3 companies that has my complete loyalty. I took a brief hiatus from my ATX to try out DE shaving on my dome but I found that the ATX experience for me is unbeatable I get a quick close daily shave minus the worries of cutting myself.

smoothsailing, you knew that would make me watch it. Ahhhhhh!!! :o :)
greatnessinc, ahhhhh (as in ahhhh no stress and all fun with ATX) these SR guys are connoisseurs of full blown thrill seeker shaving!
