Title: 25 and giving bald by choice a go...
Post by: Titus on May 18, 2015, 01:54:03 AM
Hi there my new brotherhood of sly gents. I've shaved it all off once before a year back around this time, and kept it for a week but gave up because I felt self conscious. However, I feel that I truly enjoy the way it feels and find shaving it enjoyable. So I am a bit torn by the fact I find myself to look goofy, and with the enjoyment of being bald.

I am also torn by the fact I still grow a full head of hair easily, yet will one day be bald like my pops and brother no doubt, so maybe enjoy the hair now?

Well, I have decided to take the 30 days this time. I'm on day 4, and I'm glad my scalp is starting to match my face skin tone.

Any tips guys? I'll post some pictures I suppose shortly to see if I even really look goofy, or if I'm just being silly!

Welcome! Nothing wrong with trying it now...The question is do YOU like it? That said, at least you'll be prepared when Mother Nature kicks in and it becomes less of a "choice". Enjoy the forum!

I think it's something I'll have to give a few weeks anyway of having to decide if I like it or not!

However, I've always said if I end up balding at all, it's all going off. So even if this is just a preview, it will be an interesting 30 days. :)

Absolutely...Although the 30 day rule is primarily for the head shaver himself (or herself), the 30 days also gives wives/partners, family and friends to adjust as well. Lucky for me, when I shaved it off for good seven years ago, several friends and a few extended family members were already doing it, so the shock factor wasn't too bad for all involved in my circle. Does your dad and/or brother shave sly or do they just rock their MPB?

There are a number of us on this site who are BBC (bald by choice), including me.

Here in my community (in the Carolinas), it's pretty common to see young men who either shave their head bald, or buzz their heads so short that you don't realized that they are not bald until you get up very close. It appears to be a rather popular hairstyle.

It always looks the same if you keep up with the shaving.  You just never have a bad hair day. You will find your routine of what you like and don't like. The Shave of the Day (SOTD) thread has lots of suggestions. Although it focuses on double edge shaving, all of the before, during and after tips would be valid with any razor.

Post a picture if you care.

Welcome, lots of us BBC guys here, I'm one too. Some people won't understand why you shave your head when you have a full head of hair. I don't make any excuses, I just tell them I like it. Good luck on your 30 days, enjoy being in the bald brotherhood!

Welcome - you probably don't look goofy at all as we tend to be our own worst critics.  30 days gives you and others time to adjust to the change - and realize you look pretty good without hair.  The fact that you like the look and feel and enjoy shaving indicates that you'll probably decide to stay sly.

Good luck

It's your choice, at least for now.  Like you, I had always said that once the thinning starts, shaving would be my choice.  For me, I was in my late 40's before I started noticing thinning, and soon shaved.  I did let the hair grow back in a few weeks last year just to see how much MPB had progressed, and the top of my head is very sparse now.  But I never really had the MPB horseshoe experience since I shaved before it was noticeable.  My relatives gave me a clue the MPB was may be my future, but I also had a number of older male relatives with a full head of hair.

Today, being bald by choice is common, its not a goofy look.  It does take some time to adjust to the look.  I live in a college town and there are a lot of guys on campus with shaved or buzzed heads, there is no stigma with the look.  So if you want to get ahead of nature, go for it.

Slybeard makes an excellent point - bald by choice is not unusual in many parts of the country these days, so you won't look "goofy".

Genetics are also a funny thing.  Both of my brother (who are older than me) still have thick, full hair with little gray.  On the other hand, my hair started to thin when I was in my early 30's and by my mid-30's I not only had a noticeable bald spot on the crown, but also a lot of gray.  I still consider myself BBC, but it's evident that my hairline has continued to recede and my bald spot is bigger.  Same gene pool, very different results!

Welcome to the club. I'd put myself in the category of BBC. I was losing it in the front and the back so I decided to go with a preemptive strike if you will. I'd rather own my bald head, than wake up one day and realize I should have shaved it a long time ago. The 30 day rule is very beneficial in all aspects of head shaving. So much happens with your outlook on yourself, what others think of it and how quickly your shaves improve. Either way though you have to be confident that it's right for you and as long as you are, you won't feel like it's goofy. Another thing you'll probably notice is just how many others you'll see around you that are bald. It's a great experience so enjoy it while you can.

Well I am pretty much still Bald By Choice as well.  I can still grow hair all over my head but it is very fine, thin, and wispy.  It doesn't look nice at all.  I always keep the back and sides shaved slick smooth but vary between keeping the top cut into a brutal open horseshoe flattop, letting the entire top "grow out" to a very short crew cut, or being completely slick bald.  It varies by the season of the year and how lazy I get!

Most people in my family hate my haircuts.  The young ones think that I should keep it completely bald.  The older ones hate it when I shave it completely bald.

You know what?  It is my head and I can do whatever I want!  Sometimes I like having my brutal flattop, but there is no feeling as empowering as a freshly shaved head!

After about 30 days they all get to the point of just being used to seeing me one way or the other and they don't say anything anymore!

But, I will withhold my opinion on your look until you post some photos for us.  Then I will give you my honest opinion as to whether I think that you look "goofy" or not.  Before and After shots would be very helpful.

BBBA, as you know, when I grow my hair out periodically, I cut it in my favorite, a flattop. This winter I grew it for a few months, and was shocked to see some receding in the front. The front of my flattop came to somewhat of a point. I didn't like the look so much.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Long day of work, going to shave and shower, then take some pictures and upload in the morning!

My father just keeps short spikey hair, and sometimes shaves the back and sides for either a flat top or mohawk. My brother on the other hand, as soon as he noticed any thinning..he switched from a buzzcut to sly.

Prior to shaving my head I gradually just got my hair cut shorter and shorter.  The last time I went to the barber I requested he use 0 blade then I started doing it myself at home then finally got rid of it all.  I even had an 80 year old woman compliment me in the food store one day!
