Today I got back on the horse of DE shaving. I took two days off to let some nicks have a break from their daily scrapping.

Head (at the sink)
Cream: C. O. Bigelow
Pre Shave: Shave Secret - applied directly to the head prior to lathering
Razor: Merkur Futur with Wilkinson Sword blade
Aftershave: Witch Hazel followed by Aloe Vera

Face (at the sink)
Cream: C. O. Bigelow shave cream
Razor: Merkur Futur with a Wilkinson Sword blade
Aftershave: Gillette Aftershave Lotion

Result: Great head shave all things considered. I got two little nicks on my left temple but they were both in spots that I've hit before. That area seems to be a real trouble spot for me. Also, I did a few pick ups once I was done with the Futur - I didn't want to tempt fate and end with a nasty nick. The face shave is somewhere between DFS and BBS.

If you haven't tried C. O. Bigelow I suggest that you do. The scent is a bit over powering but I think it's contributed to the closeness of my past few shave.

Today's shave followed what seems to have become my routine of late:

Wash head and face in the shower with Pear's Transparent soap (today I also used HeadShed)

Shave face and head at the sink:
Art of Shaving pre-shave oil
HeadSlick applied by hand  :(
Merkur razor with Derby Extra blade
Warm / cold water rinses
Nivea Sensitive After-shave balm

This routine gives me a BBS shave and the Derby blade is irritation-free (or perhaps my technique is improving!)

One thing I've noticed: the DE shave seems to provide a longer-lasting smoothness.  Anyone else notice this?

I shave at 6 AM and am still very smooth - 10.5 hours later. A very TINY bit of a sandpaper feel here and there but overall still very smooth.

Yep... the benefits of DE shaving!  Npsbg...  I notice that you don't have a shaving brush yet?  What kind did you order?

My zen-like SOTD.  This was my very 1st time shaving with a near mint condition vintage 1960 Gillette Fatboy.  It is an adjustable razor that dials from 1-9.
I dialed it on #7 and had a BBS face (sink) and dome (shower) shave.  The Fatboy is a beautiful razor that is built like a tank and shaves like a dream.

Razor:  1960 Gillette Fatboy
Blade:  Astra SP
Brush:  Semogue 620
Soap:  Mike's Natural Soap (Lime)

Finished it off with an ice cube rub and Nivea Shaving Balm.

My head stays smooth all day and into evening with my Magnum 5 cartridge razor but might have to try the DE.

Hi Ycartt:  Since you have been DE face shaving for quite some time... I am very surprised that you haven't tried it on the dome.  You don't know what you are missing.  With your experience on DE face shaving... DE shaving your dome should be easy.  Keep us posted.

I like shaving my head in shower because it seems when I shave it at sink I get irritation plus it's easier cleanup in shower. So I don't want to have to keep taking the tools between the sink and shower. Also I'm already short on time in the mornings since I get up and go run first thing.

Ycartt, that really looks good...clean, neat, organized...you done good!

Well I've given up on ever finding my old Gillette razor so to raise my spirits I bought a Merkur 38C. It's a beautiful instrument and just oozes quality. It's a long handled, barber pole model. It has a unique finish and was supposed to be only found at http://www.royalshave.com/ It arrived today and I had to give it drive. I was surprised to find that it felt very natural, like I'd never stopped DE shaving. My hand found a good angle and I scraped off three days growth like I had done so many years ago.

Face & Head at the sink:
Pre-shave: Shave Secret
Cream: Poraso (tube) shave cream
Brush: Tweezerman Badger
Razor: Merkur HD 38C Barber Pole
Blade: Merkur
Aftershave: Which Hazel then Clubman

Result: Honestly it was SAS considering there was a lot of stubble to shave off and I didn't want to push it and burn my hide. I got only a little nick on the neck as a reminder to respect the thin steel.

Exactly, Doug. I had apprehensions that I would dig some Tiger Woods divots and would run out of toilet paper plugs. It felt good not to look at red water in the sink. My Pappy would have been proud of me...nawh, men are supposed to shave with double edged blades, is what he would have said.
