What are these settings you talk about?  My Merkur doesn't adjust.

I think only the Merkur Futur has settings to adjust the blade angle.  My Merkur has a fixed blade as well.

The Merkur Futur has six settings to adjust the reveal of the blade/aggressiveness. The larger the setting number the more aggressive the blade is. One equals a nice shave. Six is equal to a potato peeler. :D

From this morning.

Face (at sink)
Razor: Merkur Futur (setting 1)
Blade: Astra Platinum
Soap: Mike's Natural Soap - Hungarian Lavender
Aftercare: Jack Black's Post Shave Cooling Gel

Dome (at sink)
Razor: Gillette Fusion
Soap: Mike's Natural Soap - Hungarian Lavender
.
Another BBS shave today, however, there were a few more nicks than the last time I shaved.  There may be two reasons. One, the blade may be getting dull, and two, I don't think I created a good enough lather.  But if that is the case, then why is my face BBS?  Instead of creating the lather in a bowl, I lathered up directly from the bar of soap.  I may have not done that correctly.

Should I cut a sliver of the soap from the bar, and use the sliver in the bowl to create the lather?

Anyway, I still have some kinks to work out in my shave routine and technique.  But I am still very happy with the progression

This morning I decided to shave in the shower after a workout at the Y.  I think my technique got a bit sloppy because I got a few more nicks, including a big one right on the crown.  :'(

The routine was:
Wash: Dove Men+care
Lather: HeadSlick
Razor: Merkur with Astra blade
Cold water rinse
After-shave: Nivea Senstive balm

The result on my face and dome is BBS, but the nicks are sorry looking!

DCSlyOne: sorry I can't advise on the lathering.  I've just ordered a shaving brush, so I have a lot to learn myself.

DCSlyOne, I make my lather by wetting my brush and then swirling it around in the soap container to load it. Then I shift to my shaving bowl and whip it, whip it good!  :D If I am using a cream that comes from a tube (like C. E. Bigelow) I just squeeze some directly into my shaving bowl and whip. Finally, sometime I have taken a small chunk of shaving soap and press it into my bowl and whip it. I pressed it into the bowl to hopefully keep it in one spot while I make the lather. If, after shaving, I still have some of the chunk of soap left, I just leave it in the bowl for the next day.

Good job on the BBS shave. I don't shoot for BBS but if I end it with it after shaving I'm happy. My shaves are usually DFS.

Doug...what shave soap do you prefer?  How do you store the soap when done?

Thanks guys.  With a bar, I guess I'll have to buy a bowl to hold the soap, then use that to create the lather in another bowl.  LOL

I usually use Proraso Ultra Sensitive which comes in its own tub so storage isn't an issue

I consider that cream. Do you ever use a bar or puck shave soap?

Yes. I have a generic shaving soap from Wally World. I bought a coffee mug just to put it I for shaving. I'll wet my brush a swirl it around in the mug/soap to load the brush, then I switch to the bowl to make lather. I just store it Out in the open when I'm not using it.

@1:30 p.m.
Dome (at sink)
Razor: Merkur Futur
Blade: Astra
Soap: Proraso Ultra Sensitive
Results: Very Smooth but a small nick or two

@5:00 p.m.
Face (at sink)
Razor: Merkur Futur (setting 6 for the first pass to knock down the few days of growth I've accumulated; setting 2 for the other two passes
Blade: Wilkinson Sword
Soap: C. O. Bigelow (in a tube)
Aftershave: Gillette A/S Lotion

The head shave was wasn't too bad but I will take tomorrow off since I shaved so late in the day. This will also allow some nicks a little extra time to heal.

The face shave was great. I did use a little too much soap and the lather was foamyer than a rabid dog, but I don't care becaus the shave was BBS! Also, from wetting my face initially to applying after shave only took 15 minutes which for me is pretty darn good. I was under a bit of a time crunch so I was trying to be fast but careful.

Doug...what shave soap do you prefer?  How do you store the soap when done?

I did a lot of reading on soaps last week. One thing I saw repeated a lot was that shave soaps will absorb moisture so you MUST totally drain out your mug, bowl, etc. and let the soap have "room" to air dry. Most places recommended something vented.... not something solid like the bottom of a shave bowl or cup.
I think that's probably a LITTLE over the edge but I'm just providing info.  :)
