Title: Is it time?
Post by: lifeinthesouth on April 06, 2010, 12:34:26 PM
I just came across this board and have a few questions. IS IT JUST TIME TO GET RID OF IT ALL? Let me know what you think. I refuse to do a comb over and I feel like that is what it looks like now. I am thinking about starting out with just a buzz, but my question is how short to start with. I was thinking a 2 but is that to long for a buzz cut? I have a definite crown and getting pretty thin in front now too.

You're right on the money about not doing a combover--I went that way for 10+ years, maybe even 15, and it was a mistake, one big one that I wish I had never done.  Honestly, I thought I was looking at my own head when I first glanced at the pictures :o.
Buzz, yes--that's what I did.  Not for a long period of time though, IMO.  I started by having my barber do a 4.  Less than a week later, I went back for a 3.  Then my cousin, who shared the genetic trait and had gone sly himself--yes a trait it's not in any way, shape for form a disease or deformity--gave me his old clipper--Wahl, still have it for my beard!
I maintained it at a 3 for about another week, then took it to a 2 myself for a week or so.  I had the "itch" and it was going to get scratched, the itch to be smooth and clean.  I noticed, even at a 4 and more so as I progressed from a 3 to a 2 that bright overhead lights made me look like all I had left was a horseshoe, a look I really didn't like at all.  I moved to a 1--and the feel was tremendous rubbing my head.  Then, three days later, no guard, gym, shower & shave.  All this from September 7 to October 12! 8).  Never looked back.  The guys here were a real rock to lean on getting acquainted w/ the shadow, the "new dude" in the mirror.  They shared the techniques, shaving stuff, etc. and encouragement.  Now, at 2 1/2 years, I'm passing it on.
Relax, take as much time in the buzz or as little as you're comfortable with--it is all about making yourself comfortable, improving your overall appearance, gaining confidence.  And all of that does come.  People you see at the laundry, the drugstore and other places all of a sudden remember your name, you'll notice a lot of other guys sporting the haircut, and most of all you won't be worrying about what's left of the hair.  The mpb continues, hidden in plain sight.  You're only regret once you're sly will probably be why you didn't do this sooner.  It's all about you, not your family and friends, and what they want, no one but you.

Thanks. I would like to get it done before the summer tan starts ( I get fairly dark without trying) so I don't have to "catch up" the sides to the top. I guess I should also mention the wife. As I have seen others on her say family was against it, but I don't get it. Why would she care so much. It is not like I ever tell her how to get hers done. She knows it is a losing battle that I am going to do what I want with my hair, but do you think taking it down slow will help her warm up to it better. It not like I have it very long now the pic. I posted is about as long as I let it get. I usually have a 1 on the sides anyway during the summer.

One more thing buzzed to the skin vs. shaved with a razor? I guess that is something I can decide when I get there.

Wow :), you said you'd only just found this site today, but what you have said has been said by so many here--the wives never do ask us, why should be ask them.  Well, you're probably thinking this already, but "Ask forgiveness, not permission!"  If you're lucky she'll adapt, otherwise you can hang out with guys like me and several others whose wives never really have bought into it 100%--toleration is about all we get >:(.  But it's for me, as I said, this is all about feeling good yourself.
Pardon me for saying this but you seem to be on the "fast track!"  Not bad, not bad at all! O0

I'll second that! The fell of a smooth scalp is the reason I have only skipped 2 days out of the last 30.

That is what I thought, it is time. I said I had one more question but I got many really. Scars?? I got a good on the front right of my head. I can't see it through what is left of my hair but I can tell by feeling it will be seen, maybe not as bad as I think it will. Would that be a deal breaker for anyone. About 1 1/2" length. Knocked stupid when it happened.  :XX anyone else got em.

Several, from two large spots from skin cancer--one is white, one is an indentation.  Scars are the "personality" of the dome.  No one notices them, but as you well know, a combover stands out, as does the Bozo Ring!.  :(

Welcome to the Forum LITS!

It's past time my Friend....... start with the buzz if you're more comfortable trying that first. Remember.... nothing beats a shave with a good brush, good shave crem, and a sharp blade.

Yup, it's past time.

You won't believe how good a freshly-shaved head feels until you try it. Go for it!
There's nothing to lose by trying shaving to the scalp. In the very unlikely event that you don;t like it, you'll be back to "buzzed" in a matter of days.

It is nice going from having hair to a no guard buzz to smooth within an hour though. I loved the shock of it all, just how I had hair to shiny smooth. I couldnt stand drawing it out by buzzing it down shorter every week, too impatient haha. I say do it, summer is fast approaching

Yes its time !  Keep in mind, the shorter you go, the obvious baldness becomes.  You got the right attitude.  Go it two short buzzcuts or a #1.5 then a clippershave then the razor.  You sound like you have it figured out.  Your wife is lucky to have a hubby who DOES NOT want a comb-over !  Good luck.  Keep us posted !   --Stasiu

Step right up. It's time.

Any good traditional barber would be happy to help you make the transition. Just tell him you want to try a few different length clippers blades if you're unsure.

But honestly, once it gets ultra short, the difference between that and the slick feel are worlds apart. Take it down to the wood and see for yourself!

Holler or PM if you need any extra convincing.

Btw, scars are cool. I have them all over my head. 8 stitches here, 10 there, 4 there... Buzz the "hair" you have down to at least a 2 or shave it. You will love it. The hair cut you have now isn't doing you any favors.

Title: Re: Is it time?
Post by: D.A.L.U.I. on April 07, 2010, 12:23:32 PM
Much better--you can, if you want, stop by a Wal-Mart or the like and pick up a clipper w/ guards, usually #1, 2,3 & 4, for about $10-14, and take it to a #1 yourself.  And, when the day comes for you to go sly, take off all guards, clean the rest off, shower, lather and "do the deed!"  [Loads of instructions in "Shaving Your Head" board.]  It hasn't been said so far, but when you finally do put the blade to it yourself, it is such a rush, words just can't express.  You can have the barber do it, but part of this is gaining authority over your own appearance and nothing, I mean nothing, compares to the first shave--taking your time, and cleaning it off.  Wonderful, a moment you will always remember.

You are really going to like this, we promise.  And #1 feels better than #2, and Sly, well that's just the tops.  It only gets better O0.

O0 Get rid of it all. After looking at your pictures, I am convinced you will not only look better but powerful/sly without the remaining fuzz. Just try it. If, after 30 days, you're not a happy, you can always regrow what's left. Best, Prof Melon

Huge! I didn't think I would have any problems doing it myself but I stood in front of the mirror this morning and just couldn't. So that is when I decided to go let someone else do it. Now I don't know why it was a big deal. I think doing the #1 next will be no problem. I guess I was thinking about it to much.

Good job.  Now that you're down to a #2 and are already comfortable with it, the next step is easy.  Take it to a #1 next.  It may seem really, really short at first, but it only takes a week to grow back to where you are now.  But you'll most likely adjust to the shorter look before it does.

It looks a lot better shorter.   You have the same hairline that I did before I went with a rug.   I can tell you that it will look 1000% better taken all the way down to wood.   Right now you look like a guy who's losing his hair.   If you shave it you look like a guy who took control.   Sly is in -- its THE look.   Go for it - you can always grow it back to a #1 and look like a balding guy.

How is she taking it over all?

Pretty well, :) only thing she said "well, it just doesn't look like your kinda haircut". I never did do a buzz when I had hair it was always high and tight and just long enough to part. So I know what she means, but that is why I thought give the buzz a few days for her to get used to. Funny thing is my son who is only 2 1/2 didn't even notice it. I have heard people say about there young kids, that it would kinda scare them to see such a change but he didn't care one bit. No bad "vibes" from the wife though.

Post by: D.A.L.U.I. on April 08, 2010, 07:28:31 AM
That's great.  You are changing your "look."  Once you've done it, you'll get a "surprise" every time you pass a mirror at first--the total look is different.  I think most guys find that it makes them look either younger or more difficult to approximate the age of the sly guy.  Either way, it's a pretty confident look compared to the "old" you.  When hair gets that thin, it makes you look much older and somehow less confident, assured, what have you.
Kids have to be a little older, between 3-4 I'd say, before they get a sense of "possession" about the appearance of their parents.  That sensitivity is highest in their early and mid-teens when you embarrass them enough just by existing. >:D
You've made very impressive strides in a very short time.  My guess is that you've thought about this change for a while and are looking forward to the total shaved deal.  And that is a very good thing.  Please remember to have some sunscreen on that dome, even now--sunburns are uncomfortable and can lead to skin cancers--take it from one who's been there numerous times! :-\
