Title: Clean shaven?
Post by: JohnMont on July 30, 2007, 07:24:59 AM
I'm thinking about doing a totally clean face shave, along with the head.  Any opinions one way or the other?

John

I think it would look good, but I for one am a fan of the facial hair.  I got a mustache and thick goatee.  But I think it'll look good on you.

John, Didn't your wife want the beard?  If I could grow one like yours, I would definitely have at least a goat.  Nothing seems to come in very thick for me.  But if you're wanting to, you should try it to see if you like it.  It will always grow back...(sound familiar???)

Sure does !   That's why I'd like to carry out the "experiment."

I say give it a go...I was always a goatee guy (for about 20 yrs)...never thought i could pull off the "Mr. Clean" look...welll I finally gave it a go...and I have to say I love the totally bald look, it does make you feel extra clean...

I say it's worth a shot if the thought is in your head...who knows you might actually dig the whole look much better....

take a look at the avatars around here....lots more 'full monty" type dudes with bald heads and bald faces these days...

worst case you hate it and grow it back in two weeks ;)...

But just like having your head scraped smooth...give the new look at least a couple weeks before jumping back to the beard ....have fun!

Let us know how it goes our soon to be "Mr. Clean" bald brutha!

John, for myself I prefer the bald/goatee combo, but in your case
I think you have to give it a try... from the pic you posted in the gallery

http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/gallery/691_24_07_07_11_28_34.JPG

I can see that you are one of the few who can look great even
clean shaven, totally clean... you have the strong facial features
that goes great with the look... I  think you could even look great
if you went to the extreme and shaved also the brows, I know it's
extreme and you would not go for it, it's just to point out that with
your facial feature you can go even totally hairless, so don't be
worried about shaving the beard...

and as somebody already told you... "if you don't like it it will grow back! ;-)

Look forward to see the pics of your experiements.

Francesco

That's a pretty radical idea about the eyebrows, my friend.  i'll think about it.

here I am down to a goatee.  what do you think?  Too "Anton LeVey?"

Still looks good John.  I think without the salt and pepper beards, you loose a few years.  Could be a definite plus.

Hey John,
Since you stepped to the goat, you might want to add the just for men before you lose it all, just to see how it would look without the gray. Hit the brows with it also, hell if you gonna experiment, try everything. If you decide to go to the clean look, I don't think you will have any problem with it, I just gotta throw my piece out on the brows. Living in the south its been hot as hell this summer, just walking to my mailbox I find myself drenched from sweat, and its about 15 feet from my door! Anyway, the brows help keep the sweat from rolling directly into my eyes, which is a major plus. I also bought some headsweat classics that I wear at the beach, etc. but there is still some sweat buildup below the band above my brows that rolls around my eye instead of into them. Just my thoughts, but glad to see your trying new things!  O0

John, you're lucky... you seem to be able to pull off multiple looks and each works well for you.  I gotta say with your 'goat' pic, your head looks awesome.  Don't mess with that!!!  It took you too long to get there.  Since you had a lot of natural balding, and the hair was grey, now you look completely smooth and no shadow.  I'm jealous.   :Xo!

Don't know who is Anton LeVey, but the look works for you.  O0
Now if you are going clean you should also take a pic with the stache
only, so that you have a pic at every step.

If you really thinking about trying the "nobrows" look you really have
the guts!!

John,  I think your beard looks great.  I've had some kind of facial hair for over 35 years, but still shave it all off every now and then.  It normally takes about a week before it starts growing back.

Take your shot.

John I think you should try the clean shaven look and see how you like it eh. Remember, it will always grow back.

I find I usually will grow a goatee for a few weeks and shave it off because my wife wont kiss me LOL.

The only hair I have on my head is my eyebrows. Which even then I've thought about shaving off.

Nice shaved head bro, not a trace of shadow. I've got baldness envy.

I see quite a few members on this forum have great shadow free domes.

Yeah; I'm really pleased about the 'no shadow' effect too.  It's because the hair is so white; even with a slight stubble, it doesn't create a shadow.  and speaking of stubble; when I don't shave for two days, i get this forest of WHITE stubble on the sides especially. ... I really hate it . ....  So just call me 'sly for life'!

John

I think the goatee looks great.  I like it a lot better on you than the full beard.  Makes you look "edgier" and younger.

I came perilously close to adopting the Mr. Clean look myself.  There's a barbershop around the corner from my office where I get my goatee trimmed once a week for $5.  The barber is getting older and is cutting back his hours to just Friday and Saturday.   I couldn't get there last Friday, so by Monday it was getting pretty long and starting to itch.  I decided to get a new beard trimmer to use when I can't get to the barbershop.  My old one had worn out and it had been a long time since I'd attempted to trim my goat myself.

Tried the new trimmer for the first time last night, starting with a longer length and gradually going shorter.  I put the trimmer down for a minute, and when I picked it up, I made a crucial mistake.  I inadvertently picked it up and had it facing so it would shave against the grain (on the #1 setting), because that was the direction I used to hold the old trimmer to shave with the grain.  Bottom line is I took off way more than I'd intended and the goat was pretty much reduced to stubble, which looks blotchy on me because of my hair color.

It looks pretty terrible, and I briefly contemplated shaving it all off and starting over again, but decided that would only set me back further.  Nobody seems to have noticed, so it might not be as bad as I think.  I can't wait for it grow out; I'm hoping it will be more or less back to normal by the end of the week.

John, you are definitely rockin' the sly look brother.  Sorry, but it's been a while since I've been on here so I know my reaction is sort of late.  As I am sure I will have some other surprises after checking some more threads.  Anyway, I'm glad to see you finally went through with it.  As far as the facial hair goes...Sure you could go ahead and shave it off just to see what it looks like but I'm a big fan of the beard with the slick dome.  I've actually been wearing my facial hair just like yours for the past few weeks.  I like it for a few reasons.  #1 - I think it really sets of the sly look because of the big transition from no hair to a full beard and #2 - I think it's a lot easier to maintain.  Meaning there's less hair to shave(on your face anyway.)

For someone who has such dark hair, you really have very little shadow.  Can't even see it at all in that latest pic you've posted. And from that angle, the shadow should be pretty obvious.  If I weren't already sly, seeing that photo would make me want to grab my razor immediately.   O0

You know, I almost did it because I thought the goat was ruined anyway.  But since I was down to stubble anyway and seeing more skin on the upper lip and chin than I've seen in two years, it brought back bad memories of the last time I shaved it off.  I instantly regretted it.   It was a few days before I had to go to a wedding, so there wasn't enough time to grow it back, but I started growing it back the day after the wedding and could not wait for it to grow out.

I just couldn't do it.  I need something to cover up this droopy chin and that dimple I hate so much, as well as a distraction from these fat cheeks.  It's now almost 48 hours after the mishap, and I'm starting to look a little more like the old me.  By Friday I think things will be back to normal.

It's a fun place to visit...this time around I'm really diggn' the "Mr. Clean " action. l say you should try it out...it'll make you feel a little extra bald...and really what's wrong with that?

Post a pic if you do the deed...you will feel nice and clean! O0

Amazing!  Sorry..but Im still amazed at the transformation of John....Bro.....now dont you wish you had done it like way before now?

Thanks fo rthe kind words, Brother Tim.   I couldn't be happier with how this has worked out ( I feel great, have a lot more confidence in my appearance ), and maybe it would have been cool to have done this earlier; but really; no  regrets; I did it when I felt ready and comfortable.   And besides; why live in the past?

Will have to let ya know!

So, the sentiment is getting catching !   Glad I'm inspiring you, Champ, because,  (and I don't know if you caught what I said in a post somewhere else) ; you went sly when I first started reading this site; and I was blown away by your awesome transformation.  You made a big contribution to my going sly.  You look great with the goatee; but why not shake things up a little.  I'd say you'd look great 'clean.'   Yeah; try it after Mom's visit. ...  And; I hope it goes well with her.

Hey John,

Glad you're having fun with the new look/s

Actually I got to say ... On the whole I don't usually like the moustache only look but I think that top pic you posted with the 'tache & the light shining off your freshly shaved dome is a great pic mate, but anyway you'll definitely have no probs carrying off the totally shaved look so I'd go for it .   O0

Hey, John, Buddy, If you recall earlier in this thread you kinda put out the challenge to myself and some of our other brothers that still had a hint of facial hair, to go totally Mr. Clean.  Well, I took you up on your challege and the patch below my lower lip is gone now.  I haven't had the chance to get a new avatar yet.  So John, I waiting on seeing yours...... :x!

I agree -- 'stache only is not a good look on anybody.  Very outdated and only very old men do it.  I would have voted to keep the goat -- thought it looked good, but now that it's gone, you need to go the rest of the way.

OK, What the hell Razor???  5t*mp I been gone for a week and look what happens! I guess John got to you too??
The new look is good but I got the impression you were stickin to the goat??
Oh, and my mom was ummm, pleasantly surprised at the look. She was against the goat until she saw it, and then told me not to shave it off... so now I'm in a a slight delima.
But now Razorx has jumped ship... I feel so outta place now..... D@^^

Hey champ, join the "clean" movement, what the hell you can always grow it back as they say.
I just shaved off the goat today, was a bit odd at first but now I'm digging being totally smooth.
I had been getting irritation with my goatee lately, anyway.
Anyone else ever get this?

I've got a dilemma of my own going on here and I'm not sure what the outcome is going to be yet ... don't do anything just because I did.  I still say you look great the way you are.

At times I think it doesn't look too bad, but then there are times when I really feel freakish.  I don't know what it is.  I didn't think it would be this big an adjustment.  I think I'm going to start growing it back tomorrow.

Hey Champ.  Why not jump on the experimental bandwagon and go for the clean look?!  I've been enjoying it; fun to fool around with different "personas"   It WILL grow back; so why not see if "Mr. Clean" is for you?
