Title: What kind of glass frame looks good on bald head/crop hair cut ?
Post by: iCyborg on August 14, 2009, 04:54:45 PM
I wear glasses (the frame is light metal) and now since I am planning to keep very short hair (http://"http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=10732.0"l), may be I can change my frame set too :) as I feels may be dark heavy frame will look good on me.  O:O

Any suggestions or views on this as I have seen lot of people who shave their heads using thick black frames

I prefer the lighter frames, but hey, go nuts! Get whatever you think looks good on you and makes you feel good.

pretty quick reply, and guess who, bootedbear again  :D I am already liking the forum  :@`

anyway you think people who shave heads and keep french cut  or wear dark heavy frame looks to distract people ? I mean clean shaved head, light glasses and clean shaven face may (and probably it do) looks strange, I may be wrong though :)

Edit - I am looking to have similar glasses http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=4862;type=avatar

I know we should be supportive on things, but I can't on this but I will try to be diplomatic.  I personally find thick, heavy, "horn rim" style glasses to be just about the ugliest thing I've ever seen anyone wear intentionally (aside from long fingernails).  People who wear them look like a walking pair of glasses with a face following behind.  They're harsh, dominating, and can look ridiculous depending on how extreme the frames are.

Then there's another problem.  Do you really want to walk around viewing the world with massive black letterboxing around everything you see?  I used to wear glasses and always found the frames to be an obstruction.  Why magnify that?

The glasses I recommend are the rimless variety.  They were the best pair of glasses I ever wore because they could hardly be seen.  However if you can wear them I recommend contacts.  Personally I find them so painful that I can't tolerant them for more than a few minutes.  The ultimate thing to do is get LASIK.  That's what I did and it was the best thing I ever did in my life.  It's so great that I had nightmares up to a year later where my vision returned to normal.

Not only to contacts and lasik allow you to be seen instead of a frame of eyeglasses but...

Am I the only one who'd cringe when watching those eyeglasses commercials with the models wearing 5lb black frames?

I'm going to have to agree with Rusty on this one...  I don't think a person should hide/ be hidden behind glasses.  Your eyes are one of if not THE most important feature(s) we use to communicate our feelings.  Those who have the balls to make eye contact will often use only a person's eyes to assess their intentions/mood.  Those black, big-rimmed "emo" glasses just don't work out most of the time.

That being said, I think it comes down to (A) what is most functional and (B) what fits your personal style.

The normal-sized black-rimmed glasses look great on Jer (check out photos from Slycon '09), but the no-frame variety are very stylish and professional-looking (check out the avatar for slyatlast).  I wear  bronzish-reddish metal frames with no rim on the bottom half because it works well with my pale skin and eyebrow/beard color.

I have thin wire frames on mine.  I will post a pic tomorrow when I have better light than a webcam offers.  I personally Hate, loathe, despise the thick black frames on anyone.  In fact, in the military, we called those BCG's - Birth Control Glasses.  A woman takes one look at those, and no sex for you.  :)

Unfortunately, I no longer have the contact lens option.  I lacerated my cornea in February and due to medical negligence in the emergency room, I ended up with a baterial infection that ate away all but one final layer of my cornea in my right eye.  I now require a corneal transplant and will be going back in late September for re-evaluation for surgery.  I am holding out for my Aussie mates who successfully harvested stem cells from a patient's good eye to regrow a fresh cornea in the lab for transplant.  No anti-rejection medications, faster recover and no need for synthetics.  Nearly as good as nature.  If I can get that, it would ne golden.  Until then, i will deal with being 80% blind in my right eye.

Lessons to take away.   1) Stay away from the thick frames if you want a sex life.  2) Take care with contacts.  3) You only get one set of eyes.  Treat them well.

And you may be interested to know that I don't think I have ever used that obnoxious acryonym anywhere, ever except for when I'm complaining about the overuse of trendy acryonyms on the internet.  But LMFAO!  LMFAO indeed!  I just was not expecting to read something like that!

 :*))

On a serious note, you only have the final layer of your one cornea?  Wow, because the cornea is a thin piece of tissue when healthy.  I think a normal cornea is only about 500 microns thick.  I hope things go well for you.  Will topolink lasik (aka "HD" lasik) be an option, or mandantory, on your cornea after it is regrown?

glad I could truly humor you.  :)

The eye has an amazing ability to heal.  After a month of daily eye doctor visits and tons of antibiotics, the bacterial ulcer closed and new tissue formed over the cornea.  The problem is that it left a white scar tissue on top of the lens that is so deep it cannot be lasered off.  It can only be cut out and replaced.  The side effect is an 80% loss of vision in the dead center of my focus and a 45% loss in the periphery.  I have those halos that many lasik patients talk about and any white light at night can be absolutely blinding as it just obstructs the view of everything out of that eye.  According to my Harvard educated opthamologist (sp?), I am no longer a candidate for lasik nor soft contacts because of the trench left in the surface of my eye and the scar depth.  But the damage might not be severe enough to warrant the problems that would come along with a transplant.  i will find out on September 24th if that has changed.  Bummer.

But enought about me.  Things will work out.  I no longer want to kill the ER doctor that caused the damage through his lack of care and misdiagnosis of a croneal ulcer.  But I still think my house should be paid for.   >:D

If you are trying to distract from baldness, then big, black frames (the joke ones with a fake nose and mustache) will do the trick.  If you are indifferent to responses to being bald, then the least obtrusive frames will show the gawkers that the whole head is a package, take it or leave it.

This a response from a BBC, who likes the smooth look, and hides it neither under a cap, nor favors head-based distractions (ugly, obtrusive eye-wear; flamboyantly dyed facial hair; neck tattoos [Ugh!]).

If you ain't got it, flaunt it. That's Ming's advice.

Meh. I like my ugly hipster BCG's and started wearing them not to distract from the lack of hair but to make myself look a little less intimidating (at 6'6" and 260lbs I don't need any extra help  ;) ). Plus I figured that if I'd paid for them I might as well use them.

When I originally got them went to an optometrist who knew her stuff and did a good job of helping me pick the frames. Her suggestion was a pair that weren't completely square but were a bit rounded at the top to offset the curve of my shaven head.

Picture of said glasses:
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi70.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi103%2Fsupercaptaincoolman%2Fimg1251132130457.jpg&hash=63bc6dc8f44c615ef46348d689055c9e91289a11)

Say what you want, love them or hate them, they're what I wear. After about four years of strictly wearing contacts I find the glasses to be a bit easier and a nice change. I still keep contacts for athletic and other stuff, but the glasses are a day to day thing.

I wear contacts, but just got a new pair of glasses to wear when necessary.  They are black with thicker ear pieces and prominant frames.  I couldn't get rimless because my lenses are so thick they wouldn't stay in the frames, and even if they did, would look funny.

Take a female friend to the doctor's office to help you pick them out.  The ladies in the office can give their opinions, too.  When I got mine, I narrowed the choices down and called my wife to come over and help me choose.

Get a style that works with your face shape (as said, the ladies in the office can help you with that) and fit your personality and personal preference.  Even the ugly thick black framed glasses can look cool on the right face.

I think, just like for men with hair, the right frame depends on things like face shape, coloring, etc.  I got some fairly recently that I love.  Black with thicker edge/ear pieces.  I think I look good in them and that's all that really matters.   :)

I agree that it's more an issue of your face-shape and facial features as well as your personal style.  I think the thick black glasses can look good on somebody with the right face and the confidence to pull them off.  I tend to lean towards the slightly more imposing frames... For whatever reason, I find the rimless or really thin metal frames to not really work on my face... Just my opinion.

I just recently got new glasses. I went from a metal frame to thicker plastic frame (not Emo thick... but thicker than the metal).  I like they way they look a lot (plus I really needed plastic frame bc I tend to abuse my glasses - unintentionally - and the thin metal frames get bent out of shape way to easily).

I don't know if I hide behind my glasses, but after wearing them for years they almost feel like a part of your face and it's weird to not have them on.  I feel almost naked without them (plus the whole not being able to see thing is a bummer).

Here's a picture of my new glasses...  They're plastic but have a pretty thin frame (compare to say, the guy from Weezer... haha).  Sorry, I'm a little squinty... I wanted to take the pic outside in some natural light (the sun was very bright!) so you could see my nice tweezed head too!

The glasses selection is a good match on you, and yes, the shadow-free dome looks awesome.  You remind me a little of what that guy Danny from last season's American Idol would look like if he shaved his head -  he's the dude who sported about 20 different pairs of the same style glasses

I am sorry for what happened to your eye.  But I was wondering if you've taken legal action for what happened to you.  You have a probable lawsuit there if you can prove that there is really medical negligence on their part.  A solicitor could help you file some medical negligence cases (http://www.accidentsdirect.com/medical-negligence.aspx) on the negligent doctors or staff that have treated you and caused you your eye injury.  Take some time thinking about it.

I wear wire rim glasses and like them alot.

Sorry to hear about your eye trouble Marty. I wish you the best of luck. My wife has extreme myopia and can't see very well. We are thankful for the vision that she does have. She had severasl eye hemorrages which could not be treated by laser as it would destroy all of her central vision. One eye did heal. The other eye is pretty much gone.  SHe also has very thin retinas. Not a good situation but we deal with it the best we can. I have a couple of friends that have had cornea transplants. One was getting a second one today. I hope that things get better for you. They have come a long way in treatment for eyes. Lets hope that things will get better in the future.

Take care.

I like the idea of rimless glasses, but won’t touch them as I am too rough with my glasses.  My first pair of rimless broke. I went to semi rimless; where the top half has a rim and the bottom half has no rim.  I also found these a bit weak.  I need robust glasses.  Now I am back to full rimmed glasses but with a relatively thin frame.  I agree with the comments about the thick black frames looking ugly.  These are not only ugly, but look hideous, something reserved for a person like Napoleon Dynamite.

I chose my recent glasses before I went sly.  I think my current glasses suited me better with hair.  A chrome dome dictates a specific type of glasses, I think. I will definitely change my glasses frame to suit my bald nut when my health insurance allows me to

Met a guy in Bermuda this past June - - -he had them on and and they looked great - - -
I came home and bought sunglasses and regular glasses  - - - I have them on - - -I love them.
Several bald guys I know have gotten Oakley's  as a result of seeing mine.

I have two pairs of prescription glasses, and one is Oakley. I'm wearing them in my avatar pic. I do like the straight stems that Oakley has. I bought a pair of department store reading glasses that resemble my Oakley glasses, in that they also have the straight stems, plus they are similar in shape and color.

Great pic and can see you pay particular attention to that designer stubble.

Started wearing glasses myself about 4 years ago and drifted to full time wearing. So know what you mean them feeling part of your face. The slippery slope of wearing spectacles.

Plus, it's not dignifying having to pull funny faces as you squint to try and see stuff. Just wear your glasses and be done with it ! Plus they can be a good accessory to the sly look.

I can never decide whether contact lenses or conventional glasses are the bigger nuisance. Both have their plusses and minuses and how I would answer the question depends on the day. I usually wear contacts during the day but my eyes appreciate the occasional day off from them (like today).  I know I'm going to need a new prescription soon and that will create a whole new set of issues.   :-\

Contacts can end up costing more in the long run when compared to a pair of prescription glasses of reasonable cost.  My contacts cost anywhere from $3-500/ 6 months (depending on the source), but my glasses + lenses only cost that once (aside from lense upgrades, which I haven't needed in 2 years).

I prefer my daily contact lenses over my glasses and wear them about 90% of the time.  The glasses provide slightly better vision but I'm constantly cleaning them and readjusting them.  With contacts I can just put them in in the morning and forget about them.  Contacts are better for most physical activities, too.

I find the contacts provide better vision, particularly for reading.  I can't seem to read comfortably with my current glasses at all but the contacts aren't really a problem.  I don't know why; the prescription is supposed to be the same.

And you're right, contacts are better for  physical activities.

I think the reason being that the contacts are right against the eye.  Which is why they are clearer.  Some days my eyes get so dry which I use Systane Lube drops for , and then allgery season.  Style of glass's, suits, etc. they saw will go out in in 10 years come back in again.  Hair has not done that LOL !
Once it goes out been only growing on becoming SLY !

This is the only reason why I'd consider wearing contacts.

In the rain, I can either cycle and my glasses get covered with drops of water. Or I can cycle without my glasses. Either way, it's no fun.

It's funny how some of the older guys here look at horn rimmed glasses and flinch, while younger men, women, and "hipsters" are looking back towards older/heavier styles of glasses.

I can say that I think personally that the right horn rimmed frames look great on a bald head...but not everyone can or should try the Ray Ban Wayfarers as precription glasses.

I myself compromised, and went with a pair of "brow line glasses" ala Malcolm X and G men and Mad Men of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. I wanted to purchase a pair of Shurons, but instead went with the Ray Ban Clubmasters...extremely comfortable and great looking. Browline glasses are a classic style without being too pretentious.

Then again, as a writer/artist who likes plaid, that's sort of expected of me and the next generation of beat poet wannabes and liberal arts students :-p

It's a niche thing.

Some of us older guys grew up wearing those heavier horn-rim styles.  Some of us are even ancient enough to remember when the lenses were actually made of glass.   :o :o   There was a time when there really wasn't anything else available.  They weren't fashion accessories; they were a practical necessity that weren't considered to be particularly hip. So the memories attached to them generally are not fond ones.    :)

Razor X is right - wearing horn-rimmed glasses as a kid was not fun and certainly wasn't a fashion statement.  And thank goodness for high index plastic lenses that allow people like me with strong prescriptions to wear thin lenses.  The old glass was thick, heavy and a dead giveaway that you had poor eyesight.

As to what glasses look good with a bald head, it depends on the individual and his face shape.  I currently have a pair of Oakleys with a frame on the top of the lens only.  They are gunmetal grey and look pretty good.

Did you consider buying Oakleys?
They offer almost all their frames with subscription glasses (clear or tinted), and are imo a nice choice for the sly look.

Oh, you've got me thinking....

In Spring 2013, I'm having my eye sight test. My current glasses are 3 year old and were the cheapest frames. I've already glued them back together once (you can't see the join !).

I have to schedule an eye exam for after the first of the year. I'm having a lot of problems with presbyopia but I'm not eliigble for an exam until the new year. I'm sure I'll need a new prescription and probably new frames then.  I'll check out the Oakleys.

You may end up with a bi-focals prescription. This is where I am now. Rather than bi-focals glasses, I've kept one pair of glasses for distance, and a separate pair with a stronger prescription for reading.

I wear Oakley rimless prescription glasses. They're very comfortable. I love them, but they're a bit on the pricey side.

I   met a guy in Bermuda in June  - -he was wearing Oakley glasses   - -I asked him about the glasses and he answered that they are the glasses a bald  looks best in - -They were the Oakley glasses I am wearing  - - -I think they show off the bald shiny head  with the straight back sides - - -They are the best glasses I have ever had.

For presbyopia, & contacts--suggest you at least try the multi-focal contacts.  They take a little adjustment at first, but if they work for you it's like taking 10 years off your eyes.  No matter what frame you chose or prefer, bifocals suck!

Agreed.

Twice my optician has offered me bi-focals. Twice I've declined.

I have progressive lenses and while they're a tad more expensive than bifocals, I got used to them in a matter of days.

(Also overdue for an eye exam -- and I always need a new prescription. Dang, my eyes suck)

I think fiddling with two separate pairs of glasses is worse.

I've had progressive lenses for about eight years and was able to adjust to them very quickly.  They're more expensive than regular bi-focals, but a lot easier to use than two pairs of glasses.

I prefer glasses without rims myself.

I just looked at some Oakleys online.  It's the same dilemma -- they all seem to be rectangular and I don't really like how I look in rectangular frames.  I suppose I'll have to try some on sometime and see if I can find something that works.

I think "progressive" lenses and "no-line bifocals" are the same thing.  The effect for me is the same--I have some I use when I take my contacts out, but essentially, for me at least, it's the same effect.  Okay to read in bed at night, but for full time use, forget about it.

Razor, I like the glass frames that you have. They look good on you.

Mango, The Oakley glasses look great on you and compliment your great looking sly dome.

I tried contacts a long time ago. They did not work out too well for me due to my astigmitism in my right eye.

I now wear progressive bi focals and they work out well. As long as they are in proper adjustment they work out well for me.

Razor, are there any Oakley stores near where you live? I live in Maine, and though it's pretty barren up here, there's a couple oakley stores/lenscrafters that would have oakley frames, perhaps even optical frames, for you to try.

I'll need a pair for the very same reason.  I tend to watch TV in bed and surf around the web on my tablet at the same time, and I need to be able to switch back and forth between the TV and tablet without having to switch glasses or take them on and off.    It's very annoying.

I can read with my contacts a lot better than I can with my glasses for some reason, even though the prescription is the same.  Perhaps because the contact lens moves with the eye?  I usually have to take the contacts out by 9 pm at the latest because my eyes are usually too tired or dry to keep wearing them any longer than that.

They had a few different kinds of Oakleys at Lenscrafters the last time I was there shopping for frames, but nothing that I really liked.  The selection was very poor and not just for the Oakleys.  Those big box opticians do not have the wide variety of choices that they used to.

My problem is that I tend to find something in the store that I think I like and then when I get home I'm not so sure about them anymore.  I do think it's harder to find something that looks good with a bald head because without hair, the glasses are more of a focal point.

I wear contacts mostly, but do have a pair of Oakleys that I really like.  I will have to post a pic with them sometime.

Razor, maybe when you go to chose new frames, you can take pics of some you are thinking about.  Just tell the tech that you will need a day or two to decide.  Then you can post the pics and we can give you feedback.  (this actually started as a joke, but now I think it may not be a bad idea).

They offer subscription glasses as extras for the lifestyle, active and sport-frames as well.

Razor

Glasses are a focal point for those of us who are totally bald  - - -I think the straight sided Oakleys look so good with a bald head - -They are easy  to wear and bring out the best of being BALD.

Have you  tried  them?   I think you would look good with different shaped lenses  - - - -you are so used to the round ones  - - -change  - -A good looking guy will always be a good looking guy - - -round or square lenses.

Hope you get the Oakleys

Richard

My preference is for a pair of medium sized tortoise shell frames. I've worn spectacles since I was about 6. I tried contact lenses when I spent a fair amount of time on television but since my real work keeps me around caustic fumes, they're a very poor choice. Too, I'm 6'5" and what would look oversize on others seems appropriate on me. One needs to consider the size of the person, the spread of the eyes, the bridge of the nose etc. when making a selection. Also, having a pair of glasses to take off at stressful moments can buy you a few seconds to think.....

Depends on your facial features, like if your face is an oval shape, round, square jaw, heart shaped, etc. Also, skin color, etc. So, it really depends. That's why those who wear glasses, have to try on many pairs to find out what looks good. I find that the plain black Ray-Bans (smaller rectangle frame and lenses) look the best on me.

I don't know how others in here feel about round lenses but that's what I have and I really like them.

Funny story about how I happened to end up with glasses. My girlfriend and I were watching a movie a few months ago and there was a sequence where this guy is sending and receiving texts. Every time a message went out or came in a little balloon came up on the tv screen which I couldn't read so I kept asking her "what does that say". So after about the 5th or 6th time I ask her what it says and she replies "it says that you need to go to the eye doctor". You know the rest.

I use to always wear the wire rim glasses . But the last few pair have been plastic. I like the change and find them more comfortable, and taking them on and off frequently easier.
