Title: What is considered being bald?
Post by: Tyler on August 04, 2006, 10:13:37 PM
I consider being bald one of two things.  Either you 1) shaved your head using clippers or down to the skin with a razor, or 2) you lost all or some of your hair due to natural causes or disease.

I think people that some guys that shave their head don't think of themselves as bald because they are bald on their own accord.  Bald is just an adjective that means:  Lacking hair on the head.

So, if you are lacking hair on your head for any reason, please feel welcome at Sly Bald Guys.

There seems to be a lot of people that think Sly Bald Guys is only for guys with shaved heads.  This is not true.  If you still have hair on your head but have a bald patch, or maybe the top of your head is bald, then you're welcome at Sly Bald Guys.  We'd love to hear from you guys also.

I consider 'bald', not having ANY hair on the head, either through genetics or shaving, or a bit of both. I think I fall under the (last) category. There are some people that consider anything under an inch or two, 'bald' -but that is not me.

Great point Tyler.  People that undergo Chemo and  medications, and other medical Dx's , would feel at home on this fine board and we all would and have enjoyed these fine members.  O0

I guess this is how I describe it. Neither is better but being Sly is more about control.

Haha, interesting to see different interpretations of these words.

Amongst my friends and from my questioning of my age group (early-mid twenties, college kids) I would be considered to have a "shaved head" because I shave my dome, regardless of how many hair follices exist on my head.

My friends would consider our friend who is visibly losing hair to be the "bald guy" because he's not doing anything about the situation, not taking it under control by shaving his head.

Friends with full heads of hair who cut their hair/style it are in control.

So the stigma is on the balding guy who does nothing.

No I agree Benlen, before this site, for me a guy that had taken the razor to his head would be "shaved head" never bald. as they were taking control.

To me, instinctively "Bald" feels like loss of hair - genetics, disease, whatever.  And shaved head is not.

HOWEVER, when I refer to myself I always use the adjective "Bald" - which I find convenient and not offensive in the least.

Curiously, I have yet to have a friend or co-workers refer to my hairstyle in any way.

Interesting topic, and glad that it was resurrected.

Bald: When you shave your head with a razor.

Balding: When you have MPB or hairless in general.

If a guy has no hair on top, but just a fringe left, I would say he's bald. If there is some hair still on top, he's balding.

If you shave like us, you have a shaved head, and of course are bald.

Bald to me is getting the razor out everyday and scraping my dome smooth. I really enjoy the process and like the smooth feel I get. When I had stubble some people referred to me as bald, but nothing beats the daily shave.

Agree with the comments  you either take if all off with the razor ot not. Bald feels good nice and smooth and makes a statement.
