I'm a huge HeadBlade fan. Just take your time ... and gradually it will become faster. But what's the rush? Enjoy the moment.

I'm also a big fan of the HeadBlade.  Currently using the ATX with a HB6.  I also have piles of HB3 and HB4.  I've used them all and each seems to do a fine job for me.  Not really too sure if a HB6 works better than a HB3 for me.  They both seem to do the job.

One thing that I have done, that works for me, is during my touch-up phase I hold the ATX between my thumb and 1st/2nd fingers.  I do this so that I can only have the blades contacting my head.  Now I know this would not be for everyone but I have found that on some parts of my head no matter which direction I come at I still feel stubble.  Holding the ATX in this fashion allows me to get the business end of the ATX at the right angle.  When I hold the ATX as described I'm cautious to go slow and just affect the area where the stubborn stubble is.

I like your HeadBlade attack plan, I use a very technique to get a good smooth finish.
Also I'd like to mention I found a good source and price of HeadBlade 3's but I'm not sure if the forum allows posting this type of info.

IMO, the ATX because it has more blades and you can use it in any direction with minimal or no cuts. my 0.02

For me, I get a closer shave with the Sport.

When I tried the ATX, I just couldn't get the pressure right to get an even close shave and I also had issues with above my ears. I tried the 4 and 6 blade cartridges and also the 3 blade sport cartridge on it and had similar results with all of them.

I just purchased the ATX, but haven't used it yet.

I shaved it last night with a Gillete 4 blade last night and it worked fine.  Did a little research then found out about the ATX and had to go get one.

Do you all recommend some sort of prep other than hot water before you shave?

I am a big fan of Shave Secret, sold at WalMart for less than $4 per bottle. Use 5 drops mixed in with your shaving soap/gel/cream and it makes for a smoother shave. It also can be used alone to shave. Oh, BTW welcome to the forum!

Personally I don't, I have always found that it makes everything drag more.

YMMV

As long as you didn't have any irritation, then you should be good.

Well, 2 nd shave today and took the advice on these forums and bought a brush and some shaving soap. Still used my Gillette sensor with 3 blades but with a new handle. All went fine! Shaved over the sink. Took awhile but no cuts etc.

Used a moisturiser then afterwards!

Maybe I'm a mutant but I rocked the perfect baby butt right out of the gate with my ATX.  I sat here for the rest of the night watching the idiot box and rubbing my freshly shaved melon.  It was nice.
