Title: Will You Let it Grow Back?
Post by: Timmer on September 28, 2010, 06:06:52 AM
Since I shaved the noggin in the hottest part of the summer, I got the question at work from one of the gals there, "Will you let it grow back now that it's getting cooler?"

My answer was to grin and say, "No, but I'm going to let my beard grow back.  It's hard to get a hat on my face."  We are in Idaho and we can have a winter that's like a long fall in some places or we can get slammed when the Siberian Express drops low enough.

She seemed to have a hard time understanding it.  "Isn't that a lot of work?"  "Well, no, it's about five minutes in the shower, and I don't have to do it every day if I don't want to."

And I really hadn't thought much about growing it back at all.  Maybe.  Someday.  If I get bored enough with shaving.  But if I didn't have it shaved bald then I'd probably just keep it ultra short because longer hair is just a pain in the a$$, and an ultra short just sort of highlights my MPB more than anything.

So no, I don't think I'll grow it back.  At least not anytime in the near future.  I've got a good hat for the winter and today I prefer it sly.

What's your take?

If I could figure a way to grow it back, it might be on the radar screen.  But, I didn't do this because I had hair!  Why look like a hairy toilet seat--it doesn't keep you warmer.

Not likely to grow it back.  I finally got my last person who used to pressure me to grow it to back off.  Go look for my subject about "Growing Hair Back If God Told You To".

I mean, I don't think I'll ever grow it back, and certainly never have for the winter...mind you, winters are milder here. 8)

For some, it is indeed. I would never willingly go back to having to attend daily to a rat's nest on the top of my head. Ascribe "sour grapes" if you will, but that's truly how I feel -- and I'm most certainly not alone.

You musta had some jacked up hair.. I never had that much trouble with it... The only guy that I know that shaves a full head of hair, does so because it looks like Art Garfunkel when it grows in.

Hair>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>shaved>rocking a Costanza. IMO anyway.

Shaving is marginally  better than MPB but Hair is superior 99% of the time.

Bear buddy, if you hadn't mentioned something as outrageously ridiculous as a Bieber-head, I would have never thought to put the hair of a teenager on you!  ::)

I'm not sure I should ever wish that on any adult, let alone a dome with such incredible character as yours.  O:O
Timmer, you'd best tred carefully on any photo shop adventures you might be dreaming up for this weekend... 8)

I always said I never would but when I was in the whole process of moving and a bad break up plus tons of other stuff that happened I let it grow back out of lazyness. I thought Id give it 2 months at the most. I went 3 weeks and got a bald fade then at 5 weeks it made me completely insane. I couldnt stop itching my scalp, I looked horrible, I had a bad case of little man syndrome, it wasnt me at all so I went and got a barbershop shave. That was a bad experience but now my head is healed up again and I am back to my every other day routine. My current girl asked me if I ever would grow it back, I went into a big rant of why I never would. She pulled the "even if I really really wanted you to?" thing and I flat out said never again. The 5 weeks of hair was the worst 5 weeks of my life.

I do not plan to let it grow back. But then, one should never say never. Got a hat for the winter months.

I have let it grow back  because I wanted to see how much hair I still have growing - - -I did  it for almost three weeks and I ended with a fringe and a GREAT looking "HORSESHOE" I have little growing on  my dome other than a little "FUZZ"
I was surprised how round and well shaped my "HORSESHOW" was

There were six of us who let the fringe grow  (four were troopers) and they were teased by the other troopers so we all shaved the fringe off  - -none of  us have much on top

True it's my opinion, but lets face it, you're trying to blue sky MPB by saying hair is a hassle,  when it's twice as big of a fiasco shaving

Shaving is easy compared to the daily maintenance (washing, conditioning, combing, drying) required between monthly haircuts.

shaving is fun and enjoyable to me. i think if you find it a hassle and pain then maybe MPB was not the issue that caused the hair to leave you maybe it was treating it poorly.

I wore my hair short so 3 of these steps were unnecessary, and washing your head is no different than washing your hair.

I've been shaving since around my join date here, and  I havent successfully done it once without cutting myself.

then may i humbly suggest take your time after a hot shower and follow a proper routine. maybe the nicks and cuts lye in a fault of your routine or your going to fast without enough blade cleaning. i to kept my hair short and find shaving much easier then the wash rinse repeat scrub and such. cleaning hair of any length is the same if you follow the directions and dont skip steps then shave is far easier.

My first go 'round with sly in 2005-2007 was partially due to MPB and partially due to having to keep my hair short for the Air Force anyway and I got tired of paying 10 bucks a week for a bad haircut.  I started by buzzing it to a one and then I finally just shaved it off.

I let it grow out when I retired from the AF and it looks okay longish, but my Friar Tuck is growing and my forehead is expanding and I simply refuse to allow that "David Letterman Island o' Hair" thing happen to me.  I'm sly now and I LIKE it.  I LIKE shaving.  It's enjoyable to me.  Part of the reason is because I've learned over time that when I shave my noggin I have to take it easy and go slow.  I HAVE to relax or I shred my head.  I CAN shave it in five minutes without a nick now, but that was after getting a decent form down.

Everybody nicks themselves once in a while, but if you're cutting yourself EVERY time you shave...well...you're doin' it wrong.

Ive tried it all, Mach 3, headblade, sensor, gel, soap, etc.. my dome has some surface irregularities in the back from catching a bottle across it back when I used to bounce at a topless bar.

I've since given up and just use the Wahl balding clipper every 4-5 days.

sometimes I think I could grow it back just to see what I look like with hair (even before I shaved I kept a full head of hair at a buzzed #1 or 2...but growing hair is just such a hassle, and as soon as the velcro comes on I reach for the blade.

Why change something I absolutely love? :)

some have a burn to them and could cause temporary skin inflammation and irritation but that is up to each person skin. at least you would be smooth without all the cuts.

Depends on each SBG's circumstances For a lot of guys who nearly needed a construction permit to prepare the tumbleweeds in the morning, shampooing, blow drying, spraying, coaching into position; or those who had to work with a toupee and all the appointments, taping etc., yes it is a substantial savings not only in time but aggravation and money. You're bringing up all these tangential points that werent part of the original discussion.   Shaving is in no way faster easier than having hair in 99% of cases.

73% of all statistics are made up on the spot1.

Let's take a look at this:

Me with hair:  Get up in the morning, hair a freaking birds nest.  Must run a brush through it, possibly even wetting it first to get it out of my face and the one side to lay the hell down.

Me bald:  Get up in the morning.  Possibly run my warm face cloth over noggin when I wash the sleep from my face.

Me with hair:  Shower.  Shave face, wet hair, shampoo hair and rinse, sometimes twice if it's really oily.  Condition.  Towel dry.  Add product if I want it to stay anywhere I want it.  Blow dry for same reason.  Total time spent on hair, 10 minutes minimum.

Me bald:  Shower.  Shave face.  Shave noggin.  Once you learn what works for you, total time, 5 minutes max.  Towel dry.  Possibly lotion noggin while adding lotion to other areas.

Me with hair:  When I'm in the restroom, do my business, wash and dry hands, check hair to make sure it's in place...frown at MPB.  Comb it.  Sometimes comb it a LOT because even with product and blow drying, it doesn't want to do what I want.

Me bald:  When I'm in the restroom, do my business, wash my hands, dry my hands, admire my noggin.  I will give the concession that sometimes I use a wipe of some sort to keep the oil down on the skull, but other than that...

I'm not buying your 99%.  I just don't see it.

I do spend more time shaving my head than I ever did styling my hair....

But I spend absolutely NO time worrying about what my shaved head looks like vs. having spent gobs of time every single day (before going sly) worrying about what my MPB looks like in the sun, under lights, with a sunroof overhead, walking down the street, etc.

So, being sly is a net time-saver for me on the mental level but not on a task level.  It's absolutely worth it, though.  I can spare 10 extra minutes a day to shave so that I feel good about myself the other 23hrs 50mins... (yes, I even feel good about being sly in my sleep).

Whether it's a time-saver or not, I just love a shaved noggin, and that's all that matters in the end.

I used to keep my hair trimmed at #1 or 2 and I'd trim it most days so it kept even, so it's not much different to shaving, except that I enjoy shaving more than I ever enjoyed buzzing my hair. 8)

When I had long hair I used to wash it every day, gel it, blow dry it, laquer it...go out in a wind and it was all over the place.

Yeah: I must be that 1% that finds it easier to shave than have hair! :D

The time spent is certainly a personal assessment, depending on your hair and of course your shaving routine.
My hair required a lot of attention, styling and such.  My shave routine in the shower is fairly quick, 4 - 5 minutes max.
So it's pretty hard to make a concrete statement for all.  It's mostly a "wash" (no pun intended) for me.  O0

I spend way more less time shaving my head than I do washing, drying, gelling, fixing, trying to make sure it is purfect.  Shaving 4 minutes, towel dry a little baldguyz head gel and voila done. I love being bald and would never change it for the world.  I get way more glances and smiles from both men and women.  Why quit a good thing?  Bald is Bold  :@`

Due to surgery I had let it grow back.  It was interesting to see the advance of MPB.  But sly is going to be my style of choice or a close buzz.

Hair or no hair requires mantainance. If you have long hair you have to wash and rinse it, comb it, etc. Being bald requires mantainance, too.
I love the sly look and feel on my head but it doesn't last and to keep sly I have to shave everyday, just as if I was doing my beard. I just spend a few minutes doing that ath the shower. But normally I'm too lazy to do that everyday, so I usually shave my head with a #0 every week or so, and go sly on special ocasions. that doesn't recquires much mantainance at all and surely is less than washing and combing.
If I'm smooth day 0 is wonderful, but on days 1 to 3 the stubble and shadow is not so good-looking. Day 4 on, it's nice to see the "small carpet" sensation, but soon I have the urge to shave again.
I have a full head, not MPB. I like to see my hair growing back and shaving it again. I don't care much what others think, so I like to alternate absolute no hair with some or very little hair.

I shaved a full head of hair off three years ago.  On the rare occassion when I have had to let it grow for a few days I couldn't stand it.   Being sly is a lifestyle choice, whether you are BBC or MPB.  Personally, I can't imagine having hair again.

Mornin fellas,

I remember several years ago wasting time styling my hair which seemed to take forever.  Now, HB c/w triple blades-slick quick-less than 5 minutes.

Just one further note.  I sure as something don't miss driving to and from a barber shop, waiting in line and paying money for a haircut.  If you factor the time wasted to do so, man, we are saving tons of time and money to do better things aaaaaaaaaaaand............chics love sly men. O0

To each his own but methinks that this forum has helped tons of guys take the leap.  Tons of good advice also-thank you!

Ooops forgot something.  Fellas, save your money on the horse portions and psuedo mpb cures that you see out there-they..............................don't work!  I reckon I've said it before.  If there was a real "cure" for mpb, it would be all over the news and the manufacturer would be guaranteeing 100% results. Most of em are vermin preying on vulnerable people with hope in their products.

I am definitely in the loving the bald head group.  I could still grow a respectable head of hair, and had a full head of hair when I shaved it off.  It is a choice and I am happy with mine.

If I could grow it back I would grow it to no longer than stubble.

Hi KJ Here,

When I shave my hair I jenaly let it grow into a crew cut before I trurn it into stubble.  I guess I need some incerisment to go from a fill head of hair to stubble one moring before going to work.  It's time to shave aging.
