If you could give any advice to someone who is balding or thinking of shaving their head, what would ithat advice be?
living in the mtns there were alot of telemark skiers. ( for those who do not know, it is downhill on cross country skis) they had a saying," Free your heels, Free your mind" now if you word it a little differently we could say " FREE YOUR SCALP, FREE YOUR MIND/SOUL" i kinda like it. what do you guys think?

well you could buy a wig .. $ 4 to 5 hundred dollars
you could get hair implants...thousands of dollars
you could buy rogain or other products ..more money
shave it of and go sly (priceless)

As all others said ... I would shave it.
I am even not balding and shaving my head. ;)
Few hair on the head almost look rediculous but shaving the head shows self-confidence and most men look really good when they are bald!
...Besides you getter better mileage on your bike!
Please, understand that I am a newbie here and still working my way around the boards, but I have yet to hear anyone mention the other main reason to save it...
No more gray hairs!!
Unless you have facial hair...I can see mine is gonna hafta go here in the next year or so.
Robmeister, already using the Just For Men for beard. Does a pretty good job depending on how fast your hair grows. Looks natural and a little goes a long way.
He keeps saying he wants to just go ahead and do it, but my step-mom "won't let him"
If you're thinking of shaving because you're losing your hair- SHAVE IT! Nothing looks worse than a guy with a comb-over... plus the Galagher/David Crosby/Friar Tuck look is never in with the ladies...
Also don't respect men who are so concerned about keeping their hair that they take drugs whose side effects include impotence.
I'm reminded of the Snicker's Commercial where the guy made a toupe out of candy bars and everyone laughs at him.
Beer+Razor+Head= One Narley Scar+Story [one equation that we all don't want to have to balance]
If you're thinning or balding or whatever, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY JUST SHAVE IT OFF! PLEASE! I'm not balding yet (I'm actually surprised because my dad was going bald at 25) but I have a receding hairline but I'm able to still grow all my hair, but I shave my head instead. I cant stand hair to be honest and it looks hell of alot better on me. This whole comb-over crap is stupid and rediculous. The whole hair club for men is just plain horrendous. Why in God's name would you want a rug slapped to your head! Imagine if that thing fell off or something or blew away in the wind! Imagine how REDICULOUS you would look! I would even laugh myself at such montrosity! Why put yourself in public like that where you know people will stare or laugh and say "does that guy have a rug" or "that is a nasty combover"....look at Donald Trump! I think that dude looks horrendous I dont care how much money he has, he looks rediculous with that combover. Its disgusting. Remember this, people make fun of bald guys who have combovers or a rug, they dont make fun of people for shaving their heads and looks what I like to call "DECENT and DIGNIFIED. Keep that in mind. Rock on SLY brothers!
But it is bad enough to lie to them about my name
But it is bad enough to lie to them about my name
You're never lying to them about your name... you're just misdirecting them "just in case"!
Case in point... I had this attractively challenged chick hitting on me recently, and I told her my name was Paul Burke and gave her his phone number! O0

John, Brother, I can tell a different tone with you now. I can tell there is no stopping you. The SLY attitude has really kicked in. Way to GO!!! O0
Hey you'll never have to wake up in the mournig and say I just can't do anything with my hair today? Go for it and give your head a fresh scaping.
First, long hair on a balding head is just no good.I used to work with a guy that had MPB big-time but kept the rest of his hair shoulder length. I never had the heart to tell him that he looked like a bowling ball wearing a hula skirt, but I did try to convince him to at least buzz it down or something.
he looked like a bowling ball wearing a hula skirt
he looked like a bowling ball wearing a hula skirt,bootedbear....that is an awesome visual analogy....i was taking care of a patient a couple of months ago & my patient's son had that same "bowling ball wearing a hula skirt-look" & i encouraged him 2 shave. he said that he thinks about from time 2 time but is "scared" that it won't look right. i definitely explained 2 him that he would "rock" the look. his wife was also encouraging him 2 shave it also.....anyways.... i wonder if he actually "did the deed".
I always referr to that as the "Ben Franklin".
I threaten my wife with it from time to time (jokingly of course).
:/O I'd add to all the positive things the other guys have said: just consider the alternatives! Have you ever appreciated the horror of a "system," the cost of the thing, the smell of the thing, the dishonesty of the thing??? Further, have you my balding young friend, ever seen the scalp of a man who has had a plug-job and then a "correction" and then realized the whole pretense will have to stop? Much better a scarless perfectly "clean" scalp than one disfigured by wrong-headed attempts to hide what Mother Nature has inexorably decreed. It may come as a surprise to a balding young man, desperately trying to hold on to a fading self-image, that there are many people who are bald by choice and actually prefer the aesthetics of the shaven dome. Perhaps it is only my philosophy, but a man should face and embrace the thing he fears to get comfortable with himself. Otherwise fear rules you, and that's no way to live. Most bald/balding guys have at least one male relative, usually the maternal grandfather, who has been bald and loved for decades. Try to identify with him. My beloved father surrogate, a retired bishop, has been bald most of his adult life; I cannot imagine his wearing a piece or fretting about what is perfectly practical and natural. It's your face, and the expression you put on it, that really counts. Even the boomers are finding that adolescent vanity cannot go on for ever. All best, Professor Melon
New here, but after 5 days "sly" I think the slow buzz cut is good, it worked for me. After 6 months of looking through the remains on top, I tried a buzz, 3/8" first, moved to 1/4" then 1/8". I spent the most time at 1/4" but soon tired of seeing "shine" like MPB under any light. (I have always sworn never to wear the "hairy toilet seat!). So last week, it was 1/8" for three days, then clean. Reactions have been suprisingly mild, except from Spouse! She'll get over it, I think she's just in mourning, as I was for 6 months, that the mop was in it's death throws. The mop is dead, long live the shine! So now driving my convertible it's wind on the skin, not air through the hair.
Question for more "mature" sly guys. Immediately after the first shave, Fusion Power, I noticed a strange sort of "numbness" all over the scalp, it's going away now, but it was a little strange. Anyone else remember that response? I'm shaving every morning now, and at this early point find it very refreshing. The stubble by the next morning is like velcro although not extremely visible. I like the freshly shaved feel, that is worth the price of admission in and of itself.
If a newby can advise, I'd say consider going the buzz route. I got more "talk back" on the buzz than the sly, at least so far, but tomorrow's the first day at the office.
and I can sure as hell think of one or two guys that could do with a good head licking around here! ^-^ >:D

I also had this numbness feeling, but it has gone after the 3. or 4. shave.

You free this weekend, MB? I'll pay your airfare. >:D
I spent probably three weeks thinking this through. Spoke to men and women; browsed the internet and came to the conclusion that it's the next logical step for a 43 year old blading man.
Of course it's strange and the reaction at work has been that of shock. But that will so give way to an image of a man who is cool, powerful, in control and above all sly.

To be honest, I think alot of it just has to do with the shape of your head. I have seen some guys with heads that weren't exactly aerodynamic (once you start shaving your head you look at other guys domes for some reason to compare and contrast). But I figured I'm about average, and it works for me. And I think shaving your head is alot about comfort. It actually feels really good. And you come to terms with the fact that you're losing some hair, and decide rather than covering it up, let's do this whole "hair loss thing" right! Oh, you wanna see hair loss, I'LL SHOW YOU HAIR LOSS...jk, I got a little carried away there. :*))
Once you start to shave your head the issue of hair loss becomes irrelevant. And you actually look forward to shaving your head ..."The blade will clean hair off your head like a hot knife going through butter."
the blade will clean hair off your head like a hot knife going through butter; I actually like the feeling of shaving my head; it's a feeling hard to describe but it's a good thing :D
A lot of ppl on this board are trying to convince everyone to believe that attitude is the be all end all when it comes to being bald. No it's not, some ppl just have BAD headshapes that don't look good at all shaved. It's hard to play confident when you know that you don't look good without hair but have no choice.

Why are you always so negative? You must want to shave your head or you wouldn't still be here after all this time. It's scary the first time you do it, to be sure. But the only way to end the torture is to just do it. Then you know whether you like it or not. You either love it and keep it or you hate it and let your hair grow back. But either way, you know. And even if you hate it, you'll gain a great feeling of satisfaction that you had the balls to try it.
I really wish this site had existed when I was your age. BaldAndre would have had me reaching for my clippers and razor within the first two days, three tops. It would have saved me four or five years of agonizing over it like you're doing right now. Do you know how lucky you are to have a resource like this, and to be living in a time when a shaved head is perfectly acceptable, unlike 20 or 30 years ago?
You have two choices: (a) shave your head and see how it looks and feels or (b) accept whatever Mother Nature dishes out to you, regardless of what it looks like. Which is it going to be?
do it and move on bro, you're a good lookin' cat...don't worry about stupid head shape...girls dig faces anyways!
oh...and razor, thanks for he compliment...I took the statement as one! O0
Razor X, are you always so hard on the new guys. :x!
It appears this guy has some confidence issues. Lashing out at him will only increase his self-doubts. I strongly believe in a kinder and gentler approach to resolving this issue.

In terms of options, anybody can google this topic and find a wide range of hair loss solutions. I personally don't like the idea of taking pills cause I question their safety. And I did consider hair replacement surgery, but I heard the reality wasn't as sweet as the romance. Anyway, my haircuts got really short because I didn't want to be self conscious about "covering anything up." One day, I messed a haircut up and the only solution was to start over by giving myself a true buzz job (hair clippers, no guide). I decided I'd gone that far, and there are alot of people with shaved heads, why not try it ?
Anyway, so after viewing a few hundred websites on how best to shave my head, I went for it. I gotta tell you; I do one hell of a better job now shaving my head than I did that first time. Shaving your head isn't an inherent thing, it's developed. At first, you start off worrying you're going to cut your head, and worrying how you're gonna look when it's all done. It was different, but I was pleasantly surprised, and the more I saw it the more I liked it. And people reacted favorably to it.

One last thing, the most important thing. Once you start to shave your head the issue of hair loss becomes irrelevant. And you actually look forward to shaving your head because it becomes as common as shaving your face. That cool, soft, clean feeling you get after shaving your face without all that grime on it. And if you learn to shave well, the blade will clean hair off your head like a hot knife going through butter; I actually like the feeling of shaving my head; it's a feeling hard to describe but it's a good thing :D

I do realize that... but you have to remember that sporting long sides even when you're bald was acceptable 20-30 years ago. And that's what bald dudes did.

Absolutely. Bet people take you way more seriously now.
Try it for 30 days, that is the trial period.
Hi, I've been lurking for a month or so... My story: recently divorced - need to find women. I'm gray and balding but I do my best to make it work for me. I've considered shaving my head in the past but not as much as I am now. I'm close but I'm quite terrified I won't look good.
I'm a slacker with shaving my face. Probably twice a week if I'm lucky. Will this be a problem for me? Do some sly guys let their hair grow in a shadow on purpose? Will it make me look younger? (i'm 39)
I buzzed my head a few years back, not short enough I think (#2 or #3 (1/2 inch)). I did notice that my natural charm didn't seem to work as well. People seemed to get serious around me. Whatever it was... it was different and I didn't like it. Right now I see my options as shaving it or keeping it the same. Buzzing it down doesn't do it for me.
I would've shaved it by now but I've been successfully flirting with a gorgeous 28 year old. She seems to dig me and wants to spend time at the beach among other activities. :D How do I ask her how she feels about shaved heads? Or do I just chance it and just do it. I have the double whammy, very gray and very receded but this girl seems to like me regardless.
Ahhh... to shave or not to shave. That is the question.
If this current lady has a problem with you shaving your head and it is what you truely want to do then she's not into you, she's into some thing else. You can ask her how she feels about it ,but it really comes down to how YOU feel about it.
Actually take a couple of shots and then get out the clippers! (No SUI - shaving under the influence) When you wake up the next morning use a razor to shave it all off.
I'm pretty sure this lady friend of yours will see you as a confident, spontaneous dude if you take the plunge. Own it.
If you get to the end of your life and look back and have regrets about what you should have tried, then you didnt live your life to the fullest.
I did it!!! Well, I took the clippers to my electric razor and buzzed it down to nothing. I bought supplies for a proper shaving but will finish it up in the morning. I want to be awake and refreshed for the first shave.
I've had a headblade in my bathroom drawer for 7 years. Todd Green, the inventor happened to be vacationing in the same place where I spent my honeymoon. We hung out most of the week and he hooked me up with a free headblade. I picked up some new traditional blades just in case and the headblade sport because I like the wheel. When I think about it, I've been wishing I could shave my head ever since I met that dude in Jamaica. Here I am... Finally doing it. Yeah!!!
I can't thank you guys enough for your previous posts (when I was lurking) and once again for the warm welcome and encouragement. I have no doubt this is going to be a very liberating experience for me. I already dig my new look. A few days ago, in preparation, I did buy the mandatory high end sunglasses. Bolle... they're much cooler than I am and certainly more expensive.
I'll throw up some pictures as soon as possible. 1st thing: Tan that sucker.
Wow, this stuff works fast! ;D

Thanks! This is awesome! 2nd shave on 2nd day was much closer. Tried the headblade sport for about 1 swipe but decided to wait on that until I get a little more graceful. Half my life spent pulling a razor, brain doesn't accept pushing as being safe. I'll revisit it in the future once I'm more comfortable with my routine.
Busy weekend... Hopefully the response from the ladies is a positive experience. ^-^

WoW!
you totally own the Sly look!!
Thanks. New member, and this thread is giving me a lot to think about. I started a thread about the comb-over I'm currently sporting, so if anyone has anything to add over there I'd appreciate it.
I would say clip it down short first. That way if your not diggin the look you already have something on top to start growing back. If you like it short then go all the way and shave it. You'll like it 100% better and honestly wonder why you didn't do it sooner. ;D
I took a very slow approach before I went down to the skin ... number 2, then 1, then 0, then shaving the sides and back and keeping 0 on top, etc but I gotta tell you I should have skipped those steps. It just feels/looks so much better to be smooth and I can't even tell you what it does to your self confidence.
I struggled making the decision for ages and recently I started by working my way down through the clipper guards. I think it was the best move that I made, I look at old pictures or me and see how much I was over compensating with what I had left and I think it looks good now (I used to look like a mop). Some people will always disagree but who cares the only person that has to accept and like it is you!
The guys don't really say anything maybe be odd dig, but I give as good as I get so I'm not bothered. I was more shocked by the response I have had from the girls, they're really curious by it never had soo much attention. :*))
Just do it I have no idea what I was worried about! You won't regret it, and if you do just leave it for a few weeks and what's left will grow back!
DO IT.
Whats the worst that can happen, it grows back? ???

They have it right, if you have a fresh blade, some good shave creme--there's really no excuse--just do it.
Only if you are foolish enough to let it. :D

Unless of course someone already beat me to it. And they probably already have ;)

I seem to recall it's been discussed. If you get the fleece beanie (toque) they have sort of a band that, if you pull it down enough, holds pretty good. But frankly, it's kind of funny when it pops off, and shows off the dome. ;D
attractive young guys do it to like the guy in the picture too the left of this text.
In which case you need an apostrophe in im :*)) :*)) :*)) >:Dshut up :D its the internet!
For God's sake do it, man, do it!!! ;D
NEVER....EVER....NEVER....shave when in a bad or frustrated mood!! @c3
If you do, it's "Nick City" for sure. :px
Shaving should be a very ENJOYABLE experience. Take your time, and do it right, use the right products, and you'll be AMAZED at the end results!!

So far very pleased!
I just did it Friday evening (lost the rat as well). So far very pleased!
If you could give any advice to someone who is balding or thinking of shaving their head, what would ithat advice be?Let's put it as simple as possible.
whatever you do...don't get a hair transplant!
I was listening to the bald truth radio show. I find it very entertaining and like to listen to talk radio as I go to sleep. I still find it fascinating that so many people still opt for wigs and transplants and are holding out for a "cure". Some of the discussion is hysterical. One guy wanted to have himself castrated at the age of 15 to avoid mpb ???
Anyway, Todd Greene (headblade creator) was a guest a couple weeks ago (on an archive I was listening to dated 10/11/12) and he had a great suggestion. He said, when shaving for the first time, if you wear glasses, change your glasses. Or change the way you dress. This way, when you shave your head, your head isn't the only thing your focused on. You have another change to offset your focus on just shaving your head.
I think a lot of us like the change of going bald but this advice may help some people.

I think you are very handsome and will look amazing bald. Go for it.
In my experience if you are going bald then you should just get rid of it. It means you have taken control of the situation which generally makes people happier. There are so many people with full heads of hair that shave their heads that people will just assume it is a fashion choice.
Ironically I had thought about it almost 20 years ago when I moved out on my own and was like "this is the reboot of life." I didn't do it then, I think I chickened out.
My brother started about 11 years ago and never looked back. Our mom doesn't care for it but he doesn't live nearby so when he comes back she's grown to "accept it."
Now I finally bit the bullet. My hair has been thinning all over the top and I had it buzzed fairly short but last Saturday I made the plunge (I had done it once before but let it grow back) and just sat down with shaving cream and razor. I figured enough was enough. I am going to a family function next week (not a lot of family left but I guess it will be a topic of conversation). I got great advice from you slys (and slyette's) and well, I made the plunge. I love it. :) :@`
The scalp needs some color now, but I've got a bit of shiine on top, probably from the melon being so thin for so long. It's nice when the rest of the scalp is as smooth as the parts that are missing!
Thanks for all that share their ideas and thoughts with the rest of us!

I believe generally in this one thing:
If someone has the wish to shave and be bald - how can this person be happy without shaving bald? There will always be unhappiness and restlessness until he is fulfilling that wish.
Best way is: If that wish comes up - do not think, do not hesitate, do not waste time. Just go on that very day and buy the proper razor and shave - o n t h a t v e r y d a y !
Do never "bargain time" or find excuses like "that and that person may not like it", never be softy, it will only ruin your self-esteem and break your pride and weaken who you really are. The wish comes up for a good reason: You have come to realize that a man should be bald and that having hair is wrong. Nothing can send you back into old numb ignorance, once you have realized this. It is good to be bald. It is man's nature. This is why we are all so very attracted to a clean, manly shiny dome.
This is also the reason, why, once you have e x p e r i e n c e d your own smooth shiny dome, you feel so much happier and content. Just about everybody here is a proof for that. Bald life is just so much better! The faster you decide to follow that law of nature, the faster you become bald, the faster your better, bald life can manifest. Stop lingering with old bad habits, make them past now. Let go of your hair and let go of your old problems. Do not wait and waste time, life is too precious for that. Shave your head bald - life is happening NOW!
I hope these words can be of help.
Good luck
Max
I second Paul.....It's not like regretting getting a tatoo.fing great idea, where were you 15 yeaers ago! LOL
Go for it. Give it a bare minimum of 3 weeks for you, the fam, the workplace, etc... to get over the initial adjustment period (i.e. SHOCK). If then it really doesn't "fit," there's no permanent damage.
Another thing I did that has helped the fam has been 1) start talking about it, 2) start with #4 clipper guard on the entire noggin -- go to #3 -- then #2 -- and so on. 3) I found a website where they will do a bald rendering from any photo you upload to them. I have printed up bald renderings and showed the wife & kids. At first they're like "AAAK!" but after leaving the pics around...even taping them up on the wall or whatever...they're getting used to the idea.

You have to do what is right for you. However it is hair and it grows back. I started shaving about 5 plus weeks ago and it will either feel right or not. However, give it 30 days. The 30 day head shave challenge is the way to go. Gives you time to get use to shaving and for me realizing no one cares if I am shaved or buzzed. Good Luck!I think the magic if the 30-day trial is that your normal circle of friends will forget the OLD you and just think if you as the guy with no hair.

However, it will be still a new YOU for those who haven't seen you in months/years. Like a class reunion! That's always fun. LOL

Totally 😂
Be ready for the jokes.
Being in my 60's, most of my friends are really balding, and you seldom see them without hats. I never try to convince them to go sly, but I answer questions when they ask. I would certainly support them if they ever decide to shave off the scraps they have left. A couple have mentioned that they wish they had the balls to shave.you're right. . . share your own experience honestly and support whatever decision they make.I was pretty lucky when I started balding because nobody got in my face although I had little confidence in myself.
