I found an old Gillette DE I think my Dad passed on to me when I was about 15. Never used it. I also found some blades made by Simplex. Seems to pull pretty bad, so I will try again when I get some good quality blades.

Don't be.  If you respect the DE and be patient, you will be rewarded with some great shaves.

Gillette Slims were made from 1961 (3rd quarter of 1961) G-3 to 1968 (4th quarter of 1968) N-4.  Check the under side of your Slim head and you should find a letter on one side and a number on the other.

I have a 1966 Gillette Slim (L-3). Made in 3rd quarter of 1966.  Kindly keep us posted on the year and quarter your Slim was made.

That is a nice looking Gillette Black Tip Super Speed.  Wow... you are a lucky man because that was gifted by your dad.  I hope that you can try DE shaving my friend.  Let me know.

Knowing which DE to get is hard for me. So many to choose from. I dont want to buy several. Just one that i can grow with.

As Warhawk said, there's really nothing to be afraid of.
Get a cheap brush, some good quality soap (palmolive stick or cream are both dirt cheap in the uk), and go to town.  Ask here or PM Warhawk or myself if you have any questions.

Do you have a DE razor?

Edwin Jagger razors, DE89 for example, are a great place to start and those razors will last.  Also built to last are the old Gillettes you can see in the last few messages on this thread.
EJ is a good place to start, and their razors are available on Amazon in the UK, or Connaught shaving, which always gives good service.

No pics, but I had two great shaves the last few days, using the super cheap Derby shave soap.

Both days I used the 37C slant razor with a Feather blade.

First day was an Omega boar brush.

Second day was a Whipped Dog silver tip brush.

That soap lathers up really easily and gives great shaves.

I used the bowl version,  but it's also available in stick form.

Both shaves started my day wonderfully well! :@`
