Title: motorcycles!
Post by: DanvMan on December 08, 2011, 02:14:12 PM
so, how many bikers are out there?

ive been riding for 2 years on a CBT license on a yamaha dragstar xvs 125, 2000 model, absolutly love her to bits but due to bad timing with foot surgury etc my CBT has ran out so im not road legal.

Well having a bike isnt really practical as i have a family so we have set aside some money to get my drivers license after xmas, i can drive but the license part is crucial, ofc lol

I was going to sell my bike to fund the driving but i just cant bring myself to do that, i love the freedom that comes with the ride, so im gonna be storing her next week until the weather is better, do the work that needs to be done and get her into tip top shape ready to ride again. Cant wait if im honest, as much as i do need a car i absolutly love my bike and its something i wish to continue with for as long as possible!

The main reason i got my bike was due to getting a better job position at work and needed it to commute, its cheap! Used to do 24 miles a day, wind, rain, snow you name it ive rode in it! had many a good days aswel as bad lol

Share some of your experiences good and bad!

I dont know many bikers around my area so would be nice to share some stories!

Started with a Honda CB550, then sold that and got a Honda 1100 Shadow. From there I got a Harley Electra Glide Classic, sold that and ended up with a 2000 Ducati Monster (904 cc), fastest bike I was ever on. That beast could go from 60 to 120 in no time. I used that to put some distance between my a$$ and the "Buy American" rednecks that love to tailgate foreign bikes in their rusty old Ford pick-ups. I ended up selling that a few years back after too many of the blue haired old ladies in the northwoods tried to kill me.
If I was ever to buy another bike I would get something along the lines of the Kawasaki KLR-650 Dual Purpose. It's an enduro bike (on and off road), liquid cooled with a 5 speed and a 5.8 gallon tank. The estimates I've read say that it gets about 50 mpg. I would get hard bags on it for transporting my stuff and probably no other mods. It's a pretty tall saddle so that would be a plus for me. I'd probably also get on/off road tires so if I did go boondocking I'd have traction but it would also have a smooth ride on the road. And the 650 is plenty big enough to keep up with traffic on the highway.
If you ever get the opportunity to go to Sturgis take it! The first time I went they estimated half a million bikes and it was fairly crowded everywhere we went. The last time ('04) the estimate was 1.5 million and it was gridlock everywhere. Still, it's something that every biker should do at least once just to say you did.
One year during the rally, it was '99 or 2000, I was riding with a group on Needles Highway and we found the wreckage of one of the tour choppers that crashed the day before killing the pilot and his lone passenger. I'm a retired cop and the group I was riding with was all LEOs as well. So we're all walking around the site snapping photos of the blood, etc. Other people who were watching us must have thought we were cult members or just plain nutz.
On that same trip we were riding through Custer State Park on the wildlife loop and stopped to let a herd of buffalo cross the road. The herd was bigger than we thought and pretty well spread out so they were walking in and out among the bikes. I thought they were all pretty big animals and then the Alpha Male came along. He walked right in front of my bike and that dude was ENORMOUS! I'm 6'-5" and I could not see over him. It wasn't until he was about 30 yards away that I remembered that I had a camera with me and I got a really nice pic of his hind quarters but that photo does not do justice to his size. I was never that close to something without a fence or a wall between us and I have to admit to being intimidated to the point of being surprised that I didn't need to change my pants afterward.
If you ever do make the Sturgis trip try to find out when the rally is in Hulett, Wyoming. As much as the cops crack down on nudity and fighting in Sturgis they have a strict hands off approach in Hulett. I've been told that Hulett today is the way Sturgis was years ago. Lots of nudity, lots of drunkenness, lots of flying fists. Never been there but I hear it's unforgettable.
OK, I'll stop now.

I started with a Suzuki GS500 (the naked version). In Australia we have learner restricted bikes so you can't ride a Litre bike on your learners permit.

My current ride is, 2009 Kawasaki Z1000...

Love riding it, have Leo Vince SBK pipes on it now instead of the massive OEM pipes. Had it from new and done 23,000KM on it so far.

I generally ride with a big group of mates, do the odd trip away. My favourite spot to ride is in the Australian alps. Beautiful place to ride.

A few more pics to tease you with :)

Twisties for the next 105KM mainly 35Km/h corners.

Ok, you'll probably think it's a whimpy bike, but it serves my purpose. I ride a moped/scooter on country type roads the five miles to work and back. Eaton Beamer I.  I like the 70-80 mpg it gets.  I run to the store and just fun local rides. Yes, it does not go too fast, but out here we're far enough away from the city that a little bike like this is nice. Put on about 4000-5000 miles per year scooting around. Can ride about 10 months of the year.

I learned to ride when I was about 12 years old. My first bike was a 1982 Yamaha 400 Maxim. I moved up to a 1982 Yamaha Virago a few months later. I stopped riding for about 6 years and then bought a used 1986 Yamamha 920 Virago in Spring 1994. About 4 months later I sold the Virago and bought a brand new 1994 Harley Fatboy. Sold it about 15 months later after almost getting killed by cars twice in one week.
Thought I'd buy another bike a year later. Then I met an amazing woman, got married and had a couple of great kids. Bikes went on the back burner for about 13 years. Then in 2009 I bought a 2009 Harley Road King brand new. I LOVED it but it wasn't good for long rides with the wife. In November of 2010 I traded the King for a 2011 Harley Ultra Limited.... truly a Cadillac of Bikes.

The Ultra Limited is my current ride.... 9000 miles this past year.... I love that Bike.

Always nice to see what other people ride around the world, im from the UK so getting to sturgis would definatly be something to remember!

Wish i knew people to go riding with but i do enjoy it just as much on my own.

I remember one day on the way back from work a huge group of riders caught me up, must have been going on there own cruise, the bikes were massive and easily passed me, felt really awesome just riding next to them for tgat short while as there must have easily been 30 of them or more!

heres a pic of me and my little lad on my bike, get em started young lol!:

I've been looking into buying my first motorcycle at some point in the future.  After having done some research for an optimal beginner's bike, I've found what looks to be a great choice: the Yamaha Virago 250.  I'm just concerned about how well I'll fit on the bike; would someone that's 6'3" and 210 pounds be comfortable on a bike this size?

Also, what should I be doing about applying for a license and preparing for the test?  What are some things I should be looking for when test driving a bike?

Thanks

Thanks

Bill-

That bike is WAY too small for you. Even as a beginner it's a bad choice as a purchase. Ergonomically you will be squeezed onto the bike and the bike won't have any get up and go with a guy your size on it.
I'd recommend you do what SaintC said and take a beginner rider's course. Many offer bikes to learn on. Once you learn on one of their small bikes, you will be ready for something bigger. If you are goong to buy small, buy used...... because I guarantee you that in a VERY short time you will belooking to move up.
I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than 750CC for a guy your size. If you're going to eventually have a passenger, even this size will be too small. You're also going to be squeezed onto a bike this size too..... You'll more than outgrow that quickly enough too.

I think one of the biggest mistakes new riders make is to buy a bike that is too small.

PM me with questions or if you just want to talk.

Yeah at age 61 when I decided to ride I took the MSF course at the local Harley dealer. Rode in sun, rain and wind during the course. Once course was completed I found a good deal on a bike, a Brilliant Silver 2004 Sportster, with just a little over 6000 miles on it.

Take the course. I feel a lot more confident riding now.

Was taught to ride at my home in Cape Town 45 years ago. Bought a BMW then and that's what I still ride. 1200. Over the years I've ridden across Africa, Up and down as well as across South America (The ride form Buenos Aires to Santiago through the Andes is spectacular) and-this one was a mistake-across Australia. I've never once regretted having and riding one but I think part of my pleasure comes from the fact that, up front, I was taught to ride by the Police Training School in Kapstaad. You were treated just as a rookie officer and had to perform to their standards to be licensed if you chose to go that route. I'm very concerned about young guys who get a bike, haven't mastered the skills and, if they're really lucky, only get road rash. When you see a young man on crotch rocket wearing only jogging shorts, sun glasses and flip flops, it's best to start praying then. I"m of two mind-or perhaps I should say heads-about helmets. I'll wear one more often in the city than on a cross country tour. On the other hand, as a bug catcher, a helmet is better-and more cleanable-than your teeth or your mouth. PJ

I was never a keen motorcycle fan although my father was.

I have travelled the same freeway to work and back for 17 years and watched as the traffic went from hectic to unbearable.  After moving 40 KM out of town in 2005, I wondered how I would ever cope.  About three years ago a colleague was sharing how his hectic traffic nightmare was solved by him buying a motorcycle.  This sparked an idea.

After much deliberation, I raised the cash and bought myself a brand new red Kawasaki KLR 650 as this was the best value for money available for its size.  Not having ridden for about 20 years I carefully honed my skills and built up some confidence.

Since my purchase, I ride to work in all weather types.  My travel time was cut by half and my parking problems ended.  The fuel costs were halved although the maintenance is a bit hectic with the services and repair costs.

In a nut shell, the KLR is a machine that has proven itself, in keeping with the same design since the early 70’s when the US Marines used it on beach patrols.  If you stick to the service instructions, this bike just keeps on going with no problems.  The only hassle I have had is the headlight bulbs have blown three times.  By no means a bike with significant speed, there are sufficient horses to get you out of a potential situation quickly.

My dream is to tour certain parts of South Africa and Namibia on my KLR with a tent, some cash and a good mate.

I'm a Harley guy. I've been riding since my Dad plopped me onto a Yamaha 125 CC when I was 12 years old.
Back in the early days I rode only Yamahas.... then in about 1984 I went to a Bike show and sat on a Harley to see what all the fuss was about. I knew that day that I would someday own a Harley.

I bought my first Harley in late 1993... I rode it for a little over a year, almost got killed on it twice in a week, and then sold it (thinking it  was time to back off for a while). I planned on buying another a year later.... but then I met my future wife, got married and had kids. No time or money for Bikes.

Then in July of 2009, for my 49th birthday, I bought a brand new HD Road King. A thing of pure beauty. I traded that about 16 months later for  my current ride... a 2011 Ultra Limited...... the finest Bike I've ever owned.

I'm just taking my first steps into the world of bikes. At the age of 29 I've bought myself my first bike, just a little Suzuki GN125, nothing amazing but looks kinda cool I reckon (it looks like a bike, it's not trying to look like a sport bike or a chopper!).

I just need to do my CBT course so I can ride on the road, hopefully I'll enjoy it and do my full bike test and get a "proper" bike!! Would love to get a Harley (or more likely a metric V twin) at some point, I love the noise and drama of them!!

Count me in!
I've been riding since '89. I had a Suzuki GS500, a Honda CB750, a Honda Magna 700 and multiple dirtbikes.
3 years ago my best friend's brother in law had a bike he was selling due to having to move.
He had no idea what it was and didn't even know he was a rider. We went over the following weekend and in his garage was a 1998 Yamaha Royal Star 1300 with only 6500 MILES on the clock!!!
I was in love, bought her 15mins later for only 3K and we've been inseperable since.
With the exception of removing the bags, shield and installing forward controls she's stock.

I ride a 2004 Harley ultra classic
removed the touring trunk cause if i spill the bike i dont want that extra rack to take me for the extra ride if i try and bail off
the bike belonged to my mothers husband who in 2005 had a wicked bad stroke and is now unable to ride.

Okay, after not even being on the website for almost 2 months I said this would be a good place to start chatting. I started riding motorcycles when I was eight years old. Dad bought me a Yamaha YZ 80 for our ranch. I've ridden all my life with the exception of the last 12 years. Due to my multiple sclerosis the last time I rode a bike was was 12 years ago and I sold my 95 Dyna glide convertible which was my favorite bike of all time.  Then three months ago my best friend called to tell me that he Won big money in Vegas and he was going to sell his trike (which was a Suzuki)  To buy a Harley Triglide. I test drove his Suzuki,  I thought about buying it but realized I needed Milwaukee's steel but it helped me  realize I could ride a trike and now in the proud owner of a Harley trike myself. Since I am 43 and not 58, like he is, I decided a triglide was a little bit too big for me. I hunted for about a month and a half and came up with my dream trike. It is a 2009 Harley V-rod custom  trike. The only thing better than having a Harley in the garage is having a Harley with a  Porsche designed engine. The damn thing is so fast I can barely stand it.  The night I closed the garage door and it was behind it my wife looked at me and said "are you happy"? I said hell no. She said what you mean hell no,  you got your Harley back, I said yeah but I got to replace all my leathers. Needless to say Harley bags under the Christmas tree this year and I've got my full set of leathers again. I got to say, and not meaning to get cheesy, when I'm on my Trike I forget that I'm sick.

O0 I have really been thinking about getting a trike.  I miss my Harley alot, people out there driving around are nuts.  But once it is in your blood it never goes away.  I like you started riding when I was 7-8 had scooters, and just kept moving up.  There is a Freedom that a person feels when out riding , and watching for the people that are not concerned about what is around them.

By the way good post. Thanx

I've never had anything quite as nice as some of the rides you fellas have, but back in 2006 I built a Kikker Hardknock 250 to cruise around on. Last year when I had to move from DFW to Austin, I sold her to my bother in law though. Love touring on the thing. Been to France  few times and done 10 days in Spain. Problem we have in England though is the weather. We just can't rely on it. We probably have about 2 weeks of sunshine throughout the year so have to try and make the most of it when we can.

Ahhh bike memories. My first was a 1978 Honda 400A Automatic. I paid a whopping $400 for it. Yup no clutch just a 2 speed transmission. Sold that after 4 months. For bike #2 was a 1987 Harley-Davidson 1200 Sportster. It was tricked out and tuned up to fly. I paid a remarkable $1500 for that one. It didn't run The gas had been in the tank for over 5 years. After a weeks worth of time and $200 it was ready to rumble. I kept that for 2 years and then bought my current bike a 2007 Harley-Davidson Dyna Wideglide.

Wayyyyyyyy too many over the years. I literally have to stop myself thinking about it sometimes as the money I've spent has

been huge. Anyway…it's not a hobby like knitting so the cost is going to be there I guess. I still haven't learn't my lesson with

an xjr 1300 in the garage and a couple of trail bikes. On a more serious note I do enjoy a ride and the whole experience that

goes with owning a bike. We're a strange bunch and I sort of like that.

Bought my first bike, a BMW, in Cape Town over five decades ago. Still have a Beemer, sits in my garage, lovingly stored against the day I can ride again. Not, I should add, the same one I bought in South Africa. They may lack the sex appeal of a Harley or whatever and, yes, they're expensive but...I've never owned one for  less than ten years and was able to trade or sell it for about 60% of what I paid for it....over that period of time I've owned four so, I think, one could say I got my money's worth and that's before you factor in my pleasure and enjoyment. Which was substantial. Favourite ride? From Buenos Aires to Santiago through the Andes past Aconcagua, highest place in North or South America. Always wanted to do Cape to Cairo but it was never politically or physically safe. Every guy who ever owned a bike has the greatest of memories.

Well, I "HAD" a beautiful 2003 Anniversary edition Road King - until  Saturday - when I put it down at about 45MPH!  A rainstorm of Biblical proportion hit our group and I went down.

After the first head over flip the bike threw me - which was very good.  After I stopped rolling I actually saw the bike fly past me like some kind of surfboard!  Then the bike started flipping end over end.

I am OK.  I have some cracked ribs, a fractured wrist and bump on the head.   I also have a new scar in my scalp. The ribs are the worst, every breath is excruciatingly painful!

I am actually hoping that the insurance company totals my bike - I think that my riding days are over!

It has been over a week and still no word from the insurance company!  The dealer still has not cleaned the mud and blood off of my bike so that the adjuster can examine it and appraise the damage!

I spent all day sitting in a hand surgeon's office yesterday.  I really liked the guy.  He says that he will rebuild my wrist with pins and wires and it can wait until September when I am having my shoulder and bicep rebuilt.  As long as I have to be out of commission for a while it will be good if I can be down with both at one time!

But when everything is healed - I am still going to get that new tattoo!  (Hey, I have to cover the scars, right?)

Ouch!

A friend said that in Africa that a scooter/cycle rider can expect one incident like this at least once every 5 years.  100%.  The organization does not permit their pilots to ride motorcycles/scooters because of this. They invested too much into their pilots and can't afford to have them sidelined with cycle injuries.

I'm seeing a LOT more moped/scooter class cycles riding around town this year.

Well, the insurance company called this week and they did indeed total my bike.

Some of my friends are pushing me to get another bike.  Others are telling me "I told you not to get a motorcycle!"

At this point I am undecided.  On the one hand I would like to get another bike so that I can continue to hang out with my biker friends.

On the other hand I am afraid of getting on a bike again.  I had a really spectacular accident and am miraculously fortunate that I am not dead!

I have already broken my neck once - and I don't think that I will get a second chance of recovering from that!

If I do get another bike; I am thinking about a three-wheeler.  What do you guys think of those Can-Am Spders?

I used to ride but running my company (The HeadShavers Club) and family time took precedence.  However, with the kids being older now - it's time to ride again.  I had a Gixxer 600, CBR 600, Gixxer 750, and Gixxer 1000.  However, I want one of two that I'm looking at now.  Either the Campagna T-Rex (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy7bEzD06GA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy7bEzD06GA)) or the Polaris Slingshot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGtB3B-Gikc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGtB3B-Gikc)).  Gotta start saving up.  Been wanting one of these for a long time.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah; I know:  How quickly we forget the pain!  I used the insurance proceeds and added a bit to it and got a three wheeler.   It is a lot safer for me.  2012 Can-Am Spyder RTS Limited.  It is a very different ride than a standard bike but it is a real long distance touring machine!

Surprised I never saw this thread before.

In any case, I ride an '08 Ultra Classic, but it's been stripped down and looks like a Street Glide.  Absolutely love it, best bike I've owned.  This is Bike #4 for me.

Bike #3 was an 03 Heritage Softail with 18" apes.  That was totaled by my Insurance Co. when I went down back in May of this year.  Splitting lanes at a reasonable speed and an SVU decides to cut into me and pushed me into another car.  I thought I could keep the bike up, but ended up going down.  No major injuries except for road rash on my left forearm and a bruised tailbone.  I used the insurance money to buy Bike #4 above.

Bike #2 was an 01 Softail Custom.  Went down on that bike back in the summer of 2013 due to some oil on the road, that many feel were intentionally placed there for the sole purpose of causing accidents.  No major injuries except of road rash on both arms, the worst being on my left upper arm.  We were able to fix that bike and did some custom work on it.  Great bike but sadly, it started to have engine issues.  And that's why I got Bike #3 above.

Bike #1 was an 03 Softail Deuce 100th Anniversary Edition.  Beautiful bike!  I bought it in 2010 with only 6000 miles on it!  Loved it, treated me well, never had any major issues with it, even though I went airborne on that bike taking a curve to fast and hopping a center divider.  I landed squarely on both tires and kept right on going, didn't go down.  Sadly that bike was stolen from in front of my house. Insurance took almost 3 months (Geico then, I'm with Progressive now and am much happier) to settle the loss and pay me for the bike!  It was frustrating having to wait so long.  When I finally got the payment, I used it to buy Bike #2.

Attached are some pics of my bikes, past and present.

I bought my first bike in 1977 when I was still in high school.  It was a Kawasaki KZ900.  With the bike and my shoulder length hair I quickly became the "Don't you dare date that guy" kid in the eyes of most of the girls in my school.

In 1988 when I was stationed at Ft. Bragg I bought a GPZ900 Ninja.  Exactly like the one Tom Cruise rode in "Top Gun."  Had been riding without ever having an accident for over 35 years (lowsides at the track don't count) until a car turned right in front off me in 2013.  Broken collarbone, torn shoulder and a badly mangled leg.  Took me a long time to recover.  But I bought a bike when I still a couple of surgeries left to go on my leg and rode with a big brace.

Glad you are still in the wind.   Also glad your injuries were not more serious.  I had a. V-Rod trike until last fall when  I met somebody that has money to blow and really liked it so I sold it. I currently ride in 04 Fatboy that I love. One of the things that I did not like about the trike was having the muscle through the turns and the general ride. last week I discovered a company called "tilted motor works' when Jay Leno featured them on his YouTube channel.   I put my deposit down and will be buying one of those this summer.  It's truly the only trike that actually leans so much the point where you can scrape the floorboards. It's awesome

I've only recently started riding. Always wanted to learn... finally took a MSF course through a Harley Davidson dealer (being an EMT I was able to take it for free too), and finally got my motorcycle endorsement last winter.

Here's my bike... 2003 Honda Shadow ACE. It's not new, but it's new to me!

Well earlier in this thread I  mentioned my 2011 Ultra Classic. I traded that Bike in back in March of 2014 for an Indian Chieftain. The Indian is the best Bike I've ever owned.

i’m not allowed To ride motorcycles any. But for a few years I rode a 100 anniversary Harley Road King.  after having a gnarly accident I  switched over to the Can-Am Spyder  RT but I found that I got absolutely no respect and was occasionally told to; “ drive my snowmobile in the back of the pack”!
