Title: Is bald a good look for me?
Post by: AgeTwentyTwoBaldy on January 25, 2012, 02:28:27 PM
I'm a 22 year old college student. Here is a picture of me last month (December) with hair.

And here are 2 pictures that I asked a friend to take today. This is the first time I've ever shaved my head.

Should I grow my hair back or go bald for life? I have a HeadBlade, by the way.

Your head looks great bald.  The "hairy one" actually makes you look older.  Stay bald.

Well, it was a poetical question, I assume. :}

You look much younger without hair. On the 2nd and 3rd picture, I can see that you still feel a bit insecure or embarrassed, but you can believe that you look much younger and much more easy-going. However, it is clear that you still need some time to get used to it, but you needn't worry.

Thanks for all of the feedback, everyone. I was very nervous about how I looked at first, but it is starting to grow on me. I can't wait to see the look on my mom's face when she sees me again. She may be mad at first, but I think she'll accept it. She knows I've already started to lose my hair anyway, and my dad, who is 48, is totally bald.

Do you guys have any suggestions as to what type of clothing I should get the next time I go shopping for new clothes? I usually dress in t-shirts and jeans, if that helps. I can already tell that some of my shirts won't look too great on me now. Any suggestions you guys have would be great.

Your bottom picture, showing the SHINE is FANTASTIC.  Looks GREAT.  I use Aloe Gel to enhance my shine.

Keep a big smile on your face when you go see 'mom', regardless of her response. Give her at least 30 days.

No, don't grow it back.  You look OLDER with the balding look (i.e. with some hair).  The sly look makes you look younger, I think.

Now, for clothes, Jeans and a T shirt are find for playing football and gardening, but the button down shirt and slacks as in your after pictures is sharp, in my opinion. But then, I'm an old guy compared to a 22 year old.  Add a bow tie! (yikes, I got 8 comments today about my yellow bow tie. I'm going to have to get a picture and post it).

Keep the shine.  You look excellent,  twenty two

Shaved looks great on you man!  I wish I had the stones to shave my head while I was still in college.  You're getting in front of what looks to be inevitable, and you'll stand out (in a good way) in the crowd at school.  I'm guessing that in LESS than 30 days you'll want to keep this look for good!

I know what you mean about some shirts not looking right anymore.  I felt like many of my looser-fitting shirts didn't look as good on me after I shaved my head.  You can keep the t-shirt and jean look, but consider more slim cut items.  Business attire always goes well with the sly look.

for whatever reason darker colors seem to go real well with sly.   also a bit of sun ortry the Jergen's Natural Glow to get some color on your dome and you'll be looking even better.

It's got to be the SLY look for you. You look great. Really suits you. Your "before" picture makes you look much older.
So, keep your new look and enjoy it.

WOW man you really look great bald, forget the hair and just keep it shaved bald.  It true that loose fitting clothes will not loo good.  And as for business attire, that what I wear since I'm in the business world and yes it look great.  But any fitted type of clothes will do ok and even jean and t-shirts.  Just enjoy being bald which is the most important thing for us bald guys.  My mom never mentioned me being bald at all.  Its been 4 years now and none of my family has ever mentioned it.  However I had a high & tight horseshoe flat-top for a long time. Good luck

So it's been 4 days since I started shaving my head. Shaved my head this morning, looked in the mirror and said, "That's a great-looking guy!" I think the look is starting to grow on me. I've also received many positive reviews from my peers thus far. I've received some strange looks as well, but I suppose it will take a bit more time for others to get used to how I look, just like it will take me more time to really understand why this is a good look for me.

Thank you guys for all of your support, and if you have any more comments or suggestions, fire away!

I should note that the above picture was taken about 7 years ago!  Back then, my beard, when full, was still brown. except the chin.  So I should say that I used Just for Men in this pic.  But about a year later, my eyebrows went grey!

Sly looks good on  you! With that grin, clearly you know it's the right look for you. I agree with what's already been said about clothes, skip the loose fit and wear clothes that are more trim and tailored. I started wearing more polo shirts and dress shirts that are solid in color. Vertical stripes don't seem to work as much. in the summer, a tan noggin and white shirt looks great.

Agree with you about darker colours. Though you can't see it from my profile pic, I have quite a shadow - which I do like as part of the sly look.

3 weeks into the new bald look, and some people think I've lost weight, not hair !! Mind you, it's motivated me to loose some weight. I'm average height - and nearing 75 kg - about 165 lbs in american money. Before picture attached.

Right now I am using a badger shave brush to lather up both my head and face. I'm still using Nivea shave gel for now, but I have Taylor of Old Bond Street Almond scented cream on the way. It is supposed to be one of the best shaving creams in the world. it comes in a tub instead of a can and that is one reason why it is supposedly better. After I shave my face and head (I still use Gilette Fusion cartridge razors for now), I wash my face and head with a few small drops of aloe vera soap, and I let it sit for a few minutes before washing it off.

That's how I get my shine. I'm thinking that once I switch to the new cream, I may not even need the aloe soap.

Taylor of Old Bond Street does crop up on this forum. Just noticed that their shop is 20 minutes' bike ride from my north London flat.

So now I know where to shop on a Saturday afternoon...

Try to buy a soap that has aloe in it. If you wash your face and head with it after shaving, it will make you look and feel better.

Thank you.  This is the longest I've had the beard (6 months).  I usually let it grow, shave it off, let it grow, try the goatee for a while, let it grow out.... But I decided 6 months ago when I shaved the head I was gonna need the beard.  However, I don't like it in the summer.  Maybe I'll just keep it at stubble length.  Luckily, the thing grows fast and even so it takes less than a week to have the whole thing back if I don't like the way it looks.

I know what you mean about some shirts not looking right anymore.  I felt like many of my looser-fitting shirts didn't look as good on me after I shaved my head.  You can keep the t-shirt and jean look, but consider more slim cut items.  Business attire always goes well with the sly look.

I came across a clothing tip the other day.

For us bald guys, a white t-shirt with a v-neck sweater looks good as the inverted point of the sweater draws attention to and compliments the sly look. Well, it works for me....
