Title: September Sly Fitness Challenge
Post by: TyMoore122 on September 01, 2012, 02:11:51 AM
Team Sly.....Great couple months of working out here!  O0

Welcome to the Sly September Fitness Challenge. I was very encouraged by the August thread, and it was a great inspiration to me and driving my efforts...Thank you all!!

Objective: Post your fitness goals for the month, check in with your progress, support others while they march towards theirs and enjoy the summer.

My goals this month are
1)   200 miles on the bicycle (includes 1 65+ mile ride, A$$ hurts thinking about it)
2)   3-4 weight lifting sessions per week
3)   Increase Vo2max by 2 points (oxygen volume did get 4 points in August)
4)   Weight loss? Lets go with 5 pounds.

Sign up and post your September goals….above all have fun and be careful, injuries impact goals….better to go light, than go home.
Cheers,
Ty

Beardman checking in for another month!

My goals for this month are:

lose that last 4 pounds that eluded me last month, that's probably my main goal.

Keep working that shoulder...

Hrmm, I would love to be back to bench pressing over 100 lbs on flat bench and 77lbs on the incline bench by the end of the month, but they might be big asks, and I'm certainly not going to be pushing for them at all, just something to keep plodding away at really.

Maybe back to a consistent 175lb squat would be nice...

Totally wasn't just thinking up my goals as I wrote this haha...

Seeing it's getting into spring down under, I'll probably be looking to get back into all my bush walking and canoeing and stuff, so that is something to look forward too!

I look forward to see what everyone else has planned for the month of September!

Just curious, but how did you arrive at 77 lb goal for the incline bench?  Usually the bar by itself weighs 40 to 50 lbs and the plates are usually 5, 10, 25 or 45 lbs.  How do you arrive at such an odd number?  My inner math geek wants to know.   :)

Well you see, I am Australian, and here we use the Metric system. So I have just been using a converter whenever I am talking numbers with you guys, the weight I am really talking about is 35 kilograms, guess I forgot to do my sneaky round to the nearest 5 and someone finally caught me out haha!

Yah, and to make sure Beardman gets us I now speak in metric centuries when I talk the long rides  O0

Wore my Navy bike shirt as we played Norte Dame in Ireland today...we lost big time  >:(

We only did a metric half century (32 miles), son got a flat out in no mans land, luckily I had a spare.

Looking good Ty!

32 miles, sounds like a great way to welcome the new month! I did it yesterday with a brutal legs session, you know it is good when you are still feeling it the next day  O0

Lucky you had a spare on you, otherwise it would have been a long unpleasant walk home!

Hey Ty:  I'm here.  Last week was bad (weather-wise) with Hurricane Isaac giving tropical storm weather conditions to Beautiful  Pensacola that I wasn't able to workout.   Making up for it this week... I had a great workout this morning.  I can't wait to go again tomorrow. O0

Just got home from one of the most brutal cardio and abs sessions I have had in a long time too... pushed some boundaries and felt like I was going to chuck up lol. That is when you know you have had a good workout  O0

Oh and I just remembered I forgot to share with you all: on Thursday I got a new PB on the rowing machine! 2km (just under 1.25 miles) in 8:26 min, shaved 8 or 9 seconds off my previous record! It's not something I have been focusing on, but on the night it felt right so I pushed for it and it paid off!

Good job Beardman....keep it up, I always look forward to your reports.

We did a 50 mile ride yesterday, lots of hills with a new high on calories burned at 3300 for one workout, after one of the long, steep downhill's I promptly replaced the break pads with some high performance carbon pads.....after I changed my drawers that is! :)

Cheers,
Ty

Ok I'm jumping on this train as off tomorrow!! Taking small steps at first, it's been a LONG time since I've really done any sort of intentional exercise so I don't want to injure/kill myself!!  ;D

Currently at 19st10 (267lbs), my aims for the remain of September are:

- Start somesort of regular exercise program
- Get back on the healthy eating train
- Loose half a stone (7lbs)
- Try not to put it all back on when I go to Amsterdam on the 28th!!

Glad to see you finally made it here!

You seem to have the right attitude, so I am sure the weight will just fall off you, and you will be fit and healthy again in no time!

Good luck mate, and enjoy your trip to Amsterdam!

Wow, you really stepped it up since mid august, that is intense!

Just another little update from me, Last night I got yet another PB on the rowing machine, I shaved another 10 seconds (!) off my previous time over 2kms (~1.25 miles). Thursday nights seem to be good nights for me of late! Other then that I am still trucking along nicely... although my weight loss seems to have come to a halt, going to have to take a look at what I have been doing differently lately and put a stop to all the bad stuff!

Congrats Warhawk on the great workout, keep it up.

Beardman you keep knocking out the PBR's that's cool!

The hill climbs have been doing wonders for the training load and V02Max improvements and have been a heavy focus this month, cut back on the weights to heal some, only lifting 3 times a week at this point but feeling pretty good.

You all have a great weekend and keep on pumping, running, and jumping!
Cheers,
Ty

Here is my check-in for 2/3rds of Sept...

been a while since a weigh in, as of this AM I dropped 3.8 pounds in September, had no goal on loss.

Have hit my 3-4 days of strength training per week even while traveling from coast to coast.

Have been bicycle riding above target at a avg of 150 miles per week. At least one 50+ mile, 2 or 3 20+ mile and several recovery rides per week. Focus areas have been hill climbs and cadence/RPM.

A lot of the focus the last two months has been heart health and Vo2 (Oxygen capability) I also did my heart and fitness test this AM, resting heart is now 58 BPM and my test values on the fluctuations fall in the 25 year old curve with good V02max scores :)

All green on my end, still a bum left elbow but focus on reps not weight to mitigate further damage till this winter when I get it looked at.....

How's everyone else doing?
Cheers,
Ty

Ty, I think it's great how you're improving and sticking to your routine. I am hoping I can get myself going with my fitness, and a healthier eating regimen. Just can't seem to get it rolling though.
This is a good thread for inspiration though, keep up the good work.  O0

Thanks for the kind words XNY!

I had several starts not stick when I decided to get back into a fit lifestyle, there were probably 2 things that finally helped me land it.

1) 30 days in a row do something to improve my health, no matter what level of effort. Just like we tell people to shave the dome for 30 days straight...aka Neuroplasticity, its a brain science that proves you can teach an old dog new tricks by remapping the brain.
2) logging every day my calories and my exercise, I use www.myfitnesspal.com for that. Even if I don't work out it lets me stay on my health kick by managing my calories, also lets me know when I can have celebration meals :)

Just got back from a 18 mile ride with my son, we burned it up all kinds of calories for tonight's feast!

Cheers,
Ty

Hey guys, well it is the 30th here for me, so I decided I'd give my breakdown, on what has been a pretty successful month of exercise for me... if not anything else (but that is a topic for another place...) As of my final weigh in 5min ago, I am 400 grams (less then a pound) off my next milestone of 198 pounds, I don't know how much more I want to lose... apparently I am only ~20 pounds off the average body weight for my height, but I don't really want to lose any more of my size to get down to it, so I'm thinking of switching to more weight lifting and less cardio.

As for my goals, I'd call less then 1 pound a victory for my weight loss goal, only 1 month late on that... but better late then not at all!

I just met my flat bench goal of 99lbs on wednesday night!

I've done better on incline bench then expected (lifted ~82lbs on wednesday), which really amazed me, and I'm almost back to the weight I was lifting before I injured myself on the incline!

I didn't reach my squat goal though, but with how I've gone this month, I'm more then happy with myself.

I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone else has gone this month :D

Way to go Beardman, another strong month!!

I hit all my goals
-440 miles rode, several 50+ mile rides, avg ride is 20 miles+
-3 weight lifting sessions per week
-91.5 hours of work out time (bike and weights)
-6 pounds lost
-32,800 calories burned during sessions

Numbers came out better than I thought they would considering the business travels and a few lost days when I was sick....

Cons- Left elbow is still shot, working around it but even on the bike is acting up.

Hows everyone else doing?
Cheers,
Ty

That is awesome Ty! You destroyed your cycling goal!

It's funny how the numbers pan out at the end of the month, I didn't expect mine to pan out the way they did either! Turns out you can lose about 4 pounds in one night just by going nuts in a mosh pit until you almost vomit from heat exhaustion/dehydration... oops, thankfully the venue had free water available!

I'd get the elbow looked at mate, it has been giving you trouble for a while now... I take it, it isn't getting any better?

Nope, you can't really get much worse then that!

Hopefully it sorts itself out by then though, you are still a while off a snowfall, aren't you?

Next month, they are projecting another 10 days of sun right now. I will setup one of the road bikes on a indoor trainer so I can burn calories while I go through the repair process. Might lose some strength but at least I can keep the cardio up and fat down :)
