Thanks for the post Derris. I just stumbled across this site while looking for this exact topic. I typically use the andis T outliner to shave my head but it doesnt get it a clean as a razor (use a mach 3 or something similar to clean it up). Recently saw a barber use the 5 star shaver and decided to give it a try. Though it didnt get my head as clean as the razor, it was extremely close.
I did have one question regarding your post. I see that you have the balding clipper listed as 1 and the 5 star shaver as 2. Is this in order of closeness (meaning the balding clippers will give you a closer/cleaner shave) or was order for another reason? With the 5 star not giving me the perfect cut i was thinking of trying the balding clippers as I think they would give me the best shave (due to the name) for my head but Im not sure. Thanks again for the post.

Interesting. The thing about blades is that....the beginning is a bit though, but when you get the hang of it, it's just beautiful. Imho, clippers will create more irritations than a straight razor.
-
Hey Derris, I do have the Andis T-outliner, but I'm in the market for something that cuts close enough where a razor is not necessary....will take a long look at some of the items on your list, thanks for sharing!
-
you're welcome sirharry!

Check out the Panasonic ES-LA63 Wet/Dry razor.
There are many on here that use it with good results. I have one and it does a very good job. Not a blade job but very close and smooth. It is available at Target or I'm sure the Panny store that was linked a couple of weeks ago for a substantial discount.
-
You have certainly done your research well Derris
-
thanks chav! keep the dome shaved clean!
-
Hi Derris,
I was wandering if you could tell me your personal top 3 out of all the shavers listed. Have you actually tried every single clipper? I am looking for the clipper that will give me the closest shave to a razor.
Thanks
-
I am a profession haircutter and have used the Oster Turbo for years. Same clipper and same blades. Does not come cheap, but will last a lifetime if properly cared for. Prior to a full razor shave, my wife used to buzz me with the 00000, very close indeed.
Good luck

http://www.shavershop.com.au/products/beard-trimmers/xl2 the xl2 is a beard trimmer but can also be used to do your head. This one shaves it down to aprox 0.5mm which is about a days growth left on the head. they are cheap too otherwise you are looking at a couple of hundred for the aldis ones. If you buy the xl2 or any other for that matter make sure it is made in the usa or uk. Do not buy any clippers made in china
-
Update I went down today and bought the wahl xl2 for $50 aussie. I haven't tried it yet but the bloke at the shop had a demo display one and he showed me the ins and outs, it is an awesome little clipper. Should do the job nicely
-
Hey guys, I think you might want to take a look at the Andis Company 17010 ProFoil Professional Shaver. I purchased this for my husband last October who typically shaves daily with a razor. He uses this and said it works great especially for a black man, we found out about it after traveling to Antigua last year it was rated one of the best for African American head shaving. Good luck. If you like shaving with a razor the HeadBlade HeadSlick shaving cream works the best.
-
update on the wahl xl2. I took it for a test run today and my verdict - don't bother. the blades are extremely dull, they don't cut anything. idk if they are just like that or the product is faulty. the shop i bought it from would not exchange it either. It took me 10 minutes just to shave a little patch on my face. Not happy

I think you're right.
I use the headgroom clipper (philips) and cannot do it everyday due to neck irritation.
On the other side, it does what it claims: it gives you slyness.

Helo all, after reading all the posting on this thread, I have a question here n hope to get some advice. What is the difference between using blade, clipper and epilator? I am using blade at the moment, thinking of getting a epilator. :-\

The epilator does not cut hair,it pulls it out.Women use it on their legs, but for a man forget about it.

Thanks for the information! I just recently started buzzing my hair. I have the Oster Fast Feed but it does not give a close cut. I am planning on upgrading. I am stuck between two options: Wahl Balding Clipper vs Norelco Head Groom. Which one would you suggest? They are almost the same price.
The Balding Clipper on Amazon has a lot of people complaining that it cuts through the skin if you are doing it yourself. And my skin is quite sensitive. Thanks again!

-
I have been using the BGRC clipper with a #00000 which cuts to 0.2mm. I recently saw that Andis makes an "UltraEdge Outliner blade" that cuts to 0.1mm. Would I be able to use this blade on my head to take the stubble down, all over, even further than the #00000 does? Would/could I use this blade with the grain or against the grain to clipper shave? I am concerned about nicking my head with it.
-
I would also love to spear some money on razors foam and all off this frankly -if I could I would buy Wahl 5 but I can't because I live where I live and i don't feel comfortable buying from net.
-
Well Done Derris!
I'm a research guy and I found that a majority of barbers in the area rock the Oster76. Can't argue if most the barbers in town use it right?

Andis Professional Variable Speed BGRV Clipper, but £170 :o
-
The Andis Professional Variable Speed BGRV Clipper will be the best...the money is worth it! Get the #00000 blade!
-

Wahl Cordless Clipper - Bellissima
??
-
not sure bud...I just looked them up and I'm not sure about them....may I suggest the Wahl Balding Clipper? also are you on facebook?

FORFEX PRO FX670
-
not really bud.....if you want something that close you should get the Wahl Balding Clipper....it may be corded but it's worth it! or razor shave it!
-
Derris you are a real gent. I am minded to buy a Wahl Balding Clipper tomorrow. £40
I fly away on hols next week and could do with a nice close number.
Couple of questions:
1. Is the cord restrictive for self shaving?
2. Any tips on setting up the Wahl Balding Clipper so I don't, cut myself up?
Thanks for all your help
enny
-
Tell you what.....I'm gonna send you a PM to get you setup bud! Glad to help!
-
Hi Derris,
A big thank you for helping me align my Wahl Balding clipper blades yesterday via Skype. We got there in the end, I didn't know they spoke English in America, I was finding it hard to understand, but we got there in the end :P
I clipped my hair this morning and the power of the Wahl compared to my Philips is amazing. The Philips is good, but the Wahl so much better. It cuts without leaving any patches, more even, much lower and so much quicker. I doubt you'd get such power out of a cordless clipper. The cord didn't really impede my technique and I can only get better. O0
I also have a cordless Wahl Lithium Ion trimmer for shaping up. I think I'll keep the Philips as my backup device, as opposed to selling it.
I'll go back to cutting two a week, especially with the balding clipper making the process much quicker. They are also coming on holiday with me.... They deserve it :@`
-
You're welcome buddy! What are friends for? Just let me know when you wanna razor shave it and. I'll skype with you! Hope the video of using the clippers came out good! O0
-
I didn't have time to Video... Plus that's not really my thang :*))
Love the shave tho :)
-
It's cool bud I can respect that! Glad I helped you!

Hi,
This thread is obviously old but I can't decide which clipper is best for me. I'm looking for something that will cut my hair down to something between first day to third day of shaving. I've only just started embracing my new bold look so I'm really new to this.
After reading this thread I'm looking to buy Wahl Balding Clipper but I would prefer a cordless one. Which clipper would anyone recommend?
Many thanks.
-
No questions about it; The Wahl Balding Clippers are what you need and are all you'll need for a very long time. I've had my set for upward of five years and apart from a few drops of oil, that's it as to maintenance. Keep this in mind, if your hair, or what is left of your hair is dark, nothing, not even the closest blade shave will conceal the "shadow". Understand that going in and you won't feel cheated when, after you've used the Wahls or a straight razor that the "look" you want isn't there. In terms of finance, over five years I've saved far more than the purchase price and that assumed I'd had my hair buzzed at the barber shop-locally, the cost for that is (USD) $7.00. Additionally I found that I could whizz them over my face when I hadn't bothered to shave for several days which produced very short stubble, as if I hadn't shaved in several hours (as opposed to several days.) Don't even hesitate; Buy The Wahs.
A very satisfied user. (Check the reviews for these at Amazon.com)
-
I've decided to go with Philips QC5550 because Amazon wouldn't ship Wahl bolding clipper to Australia. I was looking up QC5580 and it seems to be very similar QC5550. Can anyone confirm if QC5580 is similar to QC5550?
I might be able to cancel my order if I receive a quick reply.
-
I would cancel the order mate, my Philips QC5550's have seen zero action since purchasing my Wahl balding clippers a week ago. I love them so much, that they are holidaying with me right now in Turkey :@`
-
Hey JimmyC...sorry for the late reply I had football practice, I really suggest the Wahl Balding Clipper! It may be corded but it will well worth it! Read my review on it!

Hey guys, if you're thinking of buying a Philips Norelco electric razor, here's a post where you can get a coupon for up to $30 off. - http://www2.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=22189.0

Nice post Derris :)
I have 3 sets of clippers, some old Sears ones (my mom had them for years), my Wahl clippers (not sure the model off the top of my smooth dome...LOL) which I found would yank and snag at the back right side of my head and would really irritate me, and my Oster Turbo and collection of blades. The Oster is terrific, I love it, but now that I have become committed to the Order of the Sly ;D I think they will find themselves gathering dust and perhaps a round selling them on fleaBay... :)

Since balding my head with the Philips QC5550 balder attachment on hoilday, i'm back in love with them or should I say, a bit addicted to the balding feeling ;D
Just not sure whether to do it again now I'm back from Holiday..! What will my work colleagues think :o
-
Nice! G_Bald....and EN4CER, just go ahead and try it razor shaved!
-
Greetings friends. Im new to this community, and I shave for almost 3 years my head with Gilette Fusion my head. Im almost sick of using razor anymore.. I used to shave my head in both straight and opposide side (hope u understand what I mean).
Anyway, Im down to order one of the 2 balding clippers..
Till now I was 100% sure that I would go for Wahl Balding clipper, but now I saw some words about Philips qc5550..
I want a bald head close to razor one, a good machine for that which is going to last for long time, and of course to do that thing the fastest I can..
Which one do u suggest being best for me?
Thnx in advance!
-
The comparison is between Philips QC5580 and Walh Balding clipper..
Which one would be the best choise for head + face shaving..
QC5590 can make head shaving short like Wahl Balding or is it worse? I want a bald look nearly razor's one
-
I suggest the Wahl Balding Clipper for your head.....it may be bulky on the face but it will work!
-
If you want a totally bald look and something you can use on your face, then go for the Philips, if you want a close head clip, then buy the Wahl...
I'm thinking about buying a Panasonic Shaver, but not sure which one. I'd like a fast shave, but don't want to spend a fortune.
Any suggestions please?
:)
-
I'm thinking of testing Philips 5580
but I'm also wondering which one will be faster to use, the Wahl one or the Philips... Im sure that philips will be easier to use than Wahl.
But Wahl seems better in build, but a little bit tricky in cleaning and maintenance of blades..
Damn comfused ???
-
:(
-
Think you need to decide on what on hair style you want and then buy the appropriate tool for the job!

hey guys where can I find some reviews of just electric razors...??
-
Hi there, check out www.testfreaks.co.uk
-
hey guys like most my goal is get this dam crown shadow off as close as I can, other then a razor which would u gents recommend?? I researched these from here any tips, reviews help would be great-- am I correct in thinking no clipper would get as close as an electric razor?? THANKS GUY!
Philips Norelco Head Groom
The Conair Clear Head
Oster Turbo -#00000(Completely Bald Look)
Andis BGRC #00000(Completely Bald Look)
Wahl 5-Star Shaver
-
Maybe..
But first it will cost you a thank you and then a please! O0
-
Fighu35, I have been using the Andis BGRC with a #000000 blade, which leaves about 5 hours' ...so pretty close to a razor shave, but when I razor shave ATG, I would say that it might take me 24 hours to gat back to the stubble left by the #000000. I use the #00000 also and like that too...supposedly leaves about 10 hours growth.
-
I used to use (before becoming a razor convert) the Oster with the #00000. It does a great job. It is a little unweildy to use on your own crown and it does get pretty warm.
It is a workhorse and very reliable. I love mine and I think if I was to ditch every hair product I owned but for one, the Oster with the #00000 would be it.
-
Thank you for this thread, it's been very helpful.
Does anyone have an opinion specifically on how the Andis T-Outliner vs. the Wahl Balding Clipper compare for getting the best/closest head shave?
-
I have just tried the Wahl balding clippers so far and I am very happy with them. It gives you a very close buzz. When you rub your head with the grain it feels smooth at some parts.
-
You two guys are welcome! I'm glad I help! If you have any other questions just inbox me! Thanks!

Hi all,
Looking for a good clipper. ATM, i'm using the one they sell at Costco.
I'd like to get a good one that shaves close enough (1 day or so i guess). Really important, i want one that won't cut me, is easy to use and won't take me too much time. I might be asking a lot, but price is not a problem.
Thank you
-
I suggest the Wahl Balding Clipper...
-
I suggest the Wahl Balding Clipper...
I didn't like some of the reviews about the fact that it leaves deep gashes in your skin and a lot of people are cutting themselves.
How about Oster 76 or Philips?
Thanks
-
Well Oster is kinda high in price but I did a video n here on how to fix the Wahl Balding Clipper cutting your skin.

+1 Wahl Balding clippers
-
Wahl balding clippers are very good but if you have money than oster 00000.
-
Wahl balding clippers are very good but if you have money than oster 00000.
It's easy to shave my own head wth th Oster? I heard it's a great clipper but heavy.
-
Sure Fred , but the Oster,s are ot cheap but worth the money
-
Great review -I would like a clipper to just leave me with the 'stubble' look (around a day or two's growth) what one would you recommend for this ?
-
Oster clippers and their 00000 blade will give you the closest shave you can get with this kind of electric. If you invest in an Oster you'll have it for a lifetime. Even if parts wear out they are easily replaced. Not cheap, but super high quality and reliability.

Hello,
I'm a 39 year old black male and I'm new to the forum. I've started shaving my head and I used a electric shaver and broke out in bumps so I'm here for advice.
I have a andis speedmaster
https://www.andis.com/new-pivot-motor-combo-from-andis
A oster fastfeed
http://www.beautyink.com/detail.asp?product_sysno={68C7E656-4F82-4CDB-B532-DA52C5DF7CEF}§ion=se
and a andis t outlinler
http://www.folica.com/tools/hair-clippers/andis-t-outliner-trimmer?utm_source=GoogleShopping&utm_medium=CSE&utm_campaign=fgl_R8638&gclid=CLq3jOeBwLsCFWJo7AodtxgAgg
Well, I also have a remmington electric shaver
http://www.remingtonproducts.com/mens/shavers/foil-shavers/F3900-Dual-Flexing-Foil-Shaver.aspx
I shaved my head a acouple weeks back and I got razor bumps all over my head and I think it's because of the foil shaver. The other shavers I have leave spots in my head that I had to pay my barber to get rid off.
I want to go as close as possible and I'm thinking I need to add a extra shaver to my collection.
I was thinking either a andis profoil shaver since it's specifically for black men or a wahl balding clipper and then to finish it off with the t outliner.
I'll post a picture of my head and my hair is kinda difficult to bald.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/37159305/2013-12-20%2016.55.00.jpg
please advise what I should do?
After I shaved my head I just used aftershave from walgreens so maybe thats why I got bumps.
-
Give the Wahl 5 Star Shaver a shot, it works very well.
-
what do you recommend for aftershave?
-
Is the blade on the oster fast feed interchangeable?
-
But, once you get your hair almost shaved off wouldnt the clipper be the wrong item to keep it 00000?
-
Captain Blackfoot sorry for the late reply. The blades are not interchangeable, but I just use regular alcohol for aftershave. To you Koolpc what clipper are you talking about?
-

Wahl Balding
-
You can use it to keep it shaved down but like every 3 day, not everyday. If you want it every day I suggest the Wahl 5-Star Shaver
-
Or the Wahl Detailer every 3-4 days. Cuts closer than the balding once you reset the blade, but more timely due to smaller head. I want to try the T double wide blade, which I understand is 0.5cm wider.. Not too sure what difference this might make!?
-
The Wahl Detailer can be had for a good price. Looking for a shaver etc that will take my hair down to almost the same as a wet shave. Been reading tons of reviews plus youtube vids.
Guys, the Wahl Detailer, a good alternative?
-
guys, i'm a newbie to all this stuff so i'm asking for some advice. I'm currently using the andis superliner with satisfactory results. I'm still considering making the transition to blades for a better shave. Do blades really give that much better of a shave? I've heard the mach 3 is the best blade, is that really true? if so, why is it better than the fusion. Also I'm not really going for the 'slick n shiny' bald look but rather, since I still have hair on top my head I was more going for the rock/vin diesel shaved look. Can I get that with a razor or is a razor restricted to achieving the 'slick n shiny' look. Thanks guys
-
HOLY CRAP! Derris. Dude, you gotta throw out a warning about the Wahl 5 star shaver. That thing is hella powerful! I just tried them for the first time and that thing scared the hell out of me! Too Funny! When I was shaving my head with them it sounded like one of those tree trimmer mulchers that they feed the chopped down branches into. Sucker was loud and strong.
I'm definitely impressed with the closeness of the shave. I laid down some Williams 'Lectric Shave before I fired up the shaver and got a very, very close shave on the melon. I could be wrong but I do believe that I am feeling some baby buttness in a lot of places. I imagine that it will only be better tomorrow when I shave after taking a shower.
-
The Detailer is supposed to shave even closer!
-
Purchased the Wahl Balding Clippers from Amazon last week and they worked great... that day. Tried them again yesterday and they turn on but are not cutting. Anyone have any experience with these and know what the problem may be?
Like I said they switch on (though the click doesn't sound the same as it did last week). You can hear and feel that they are on, but they just aren't cutting. Do I need to just return them?

I would call our email Wahl. Sounds like you might have received a lemon.
-
Unfortunately I would have to agree with Tyler.
-
Thing is guys, once you have your head sly, wouldnt a foil or rotary shaver be better than a clipper to keep it almost as sly as with a wet shaver?
-
When I used to work at the prison we got free haircuts and had a barber shop there since military haircut was required.at the time I wore a bald fade haircut so the sides were skin and he would use the oster clippers for lining up on the sides they would bite but it was almost at slick as the razor
-
Derris and all,
First time balding my head last week. I just went to the barber and had him do it. But now I'd like to do it myself. Based on the helpful reviews and comments here, I went with the Walh 5-Star Balding Clippers. One thing though: I've heard that these clippers can be deadly (gouging and causing cuts on the scalp). Anything I should be aware of? Do I have to adjust them before I use them the first time?
-
Not really. Just use some common sense.
-
Don't push hard, just let them glide O0
-
Best shaver i have bought is the Braun! Takes a few passes but almost baby smooth!
-
Anyone got any recommendations for quality clippers that go to 00000 for under $100?
I don't like the razor shaved dome look especially since I have a lot of my hair still.
-
Look at a detailer. The Wahl one.
-
The hair trimming blade on my Norelco head groom broke, anyone know where to get replacement parts.
-
baldOUfan, they stopped making them I'm pretty sure. You may be able to order it directly off of their site or on amazon but it looks like they're phasing it out.
To the OP, alright so I've watched a lot of barber videos of the Wahl 5 Star shaver and the Andis Profoil and I think I'm going with Wahl. But what I want to know is, will that beast make the whole head even and not leave patches of longer hair??
-
A trimmer will trim every hair to the same length. It wouldnt leave some longer than others.
-
Right, but what I'm asking about are shavers, not trimmers. Some electric shavers (from my experience) will leave random patches of hair and not touch them. That's why I said to hell with norelco and am focusing on powerful motor foil shavers.
-

Ok, but everyone's head is different so a shaver will be good for one person and not good for another due to different shape and bumps and hollows etc.
My Braun is good but as I said I need to go over a couple of places because of the shape or terrain of my head.
Once I have shaved with the Braun you wouldn't be able to tell there are some rough patches! It's only by feel I know there are some there!
-
There are a lot of good head shavers out there but I do prefer using a hand razor myself. I love the baby butt smooth feeling that I get from usinmg a hand razor.
-
Drewski see about Braun....I use it and to my head works good. Just look at model who dont have stable-foil head, and take the one who have moving system/head, because head/foil follow the shape of your head.
-
Thanks Yannis, giving the Wahl 5 Star Shaver a try and then I'll try one of those out.
-
You will be a guru on electric shaver for the head soon! lol
-
Hahahaha dude yes!
-
Or the Wahl Detailer every 3-4 days. Cuts closer than the balding once you reset the blade, but more timely due to smaller head. I want to try the T double wide blade, which I understand is 0.5cm wider.. Not too sure what difference this might make!?
T-Wider Blade arrived yesterday, I set it up and used it today.
I zero gaped the blade via a table as the zero gaping tool supplied with my original Wahl detailer, wouldn't accommodate the wider blade.
Visually the blade doesn't appear to be that much wider, but the subtle difference in size makes a huge difference in time taken to bald the head. The blade is so much sharper, which I put down to design as opposed to just being a newer blade. O0
I was concerned the blade would cut me, based on all the Interweb\Youtube claims, luckily this wasn't the case and if you don't go mad, you'll be okay ! :)
I'd definitely recommend the upgrade, which provides welcome benefits to what is already a very decent clipper. O0
Hope this helps others too O:O
-
I used the Classic 76 for 15 yrs with an 00000 blade. The closest you can get without a razor blade.
-
Hey Derris, of all the electric razors you listed, which one would you recommend to get as close to a razor cut as possible?
Thanks,
Lee

My Braun seems like it is not cutting as good as it used to. I do occasionaly use it on my head but today i tried it and wasnt as good as a month or so ago. I do use it regular on face.
-
>Goatee. How many months you have it? I asked this because Braun said every 18 months, head need replace. Of course that depends from use...if you use it for face and head I think the life was less.
-
Approx 6 months i would say, at a guess
-
Maybe yours Braun was jealous because you use also DE, and stopped to working good at your head for that reason :D
-
Yea, i am sure that is right! lol

Hi guys,
I tried the Wahl balding clipper, too dangerous for me, it results a bloody cut, it's too sharp.
After that, I tried the Wahl 5* detailer and waou it's sharp and smooth, i like it. It's not as closer cut than the wahl balding but it's ok for me.
-
Hi,
this guy modified the Wahl balding clipper with a 0000 adjusto lock but there is 3 holes, i don't understand how he did.

Hi guys,
just a little feedback about the T-Wide blade for Wahl detailer. I received it in France from an ebay US seller (chopmyhair) it was very fast thank to them.
So, the blade is a little wider than the T original but what a difference! First I had to zero gap it on a table but then waou, close cut but smooth and my sensitive skin is happy. I think i've found the best deal.
I recommend you the Wahl detailer with the T-Wide blade !

Hey all!
Some good info here on Clippers/Trimmers but a lot of the posts are a bit dated. Am in the market for a good, reliable, Clipper/Trimmer for keeping my noggin nice & shiny. I'm considering a couple of Osters - the Fast Feed #CL-76023510 vs the Salon Pro #76830-020 and a unit from Andis, the T-Outliner #04710. Anyone have opinions as to which would be the best buy or have a recommendation for a better current offering?
TIA - Dave
-
Well, since I got no advice from anyone here, I decided for myself. Couldn't see much difference between the Fast Feed and the Salon Pro so I ordered the latter as it was $10 less. Hopefully, I made a good choice.
-
Interesting. The thing about blades is that....the beginning is a bit though, but when you get the hang of it, it's just beautiful. Imho, clippers will create more irritations than a straight razor.
Yes I agree with this statement. When I don't want to take the time for the blade I use a very good electric shaver.

Always interested in a good shaver / clipper. So far the Braun has been the best for me
-
I've been interested in getting a good electric shaver, but they all seem so expensive that I never pull the trigger. Love getting my head smooth with the razor, but some days it feels like there's no time.

Guys I want to say, for my customers who don't want their head razor shaved I use the Wahl 5-Star Shaver. It works like a charm and shaves the head bald just like a razor.

Hey Guys! We wrote a detailed review on the skull shaver, the one with the five rotating blades. We think it's a huge time-saver compared to traditional electric shavers.
You can read the full review here if you like: http://www.stylesamplemag.com/what-is-the-best-electric-shaver-for-your-head/ (http://www.stylesamplemag.com/what-is-the-best-electric-shaver-for-your-head/)

So, after 2 years of using Philips Norelco I am now back looking for the a replacement. The quality build of this shaver isn't the best. Before I commit to buying another device I wanted to opinions between Wahl 5-Star shaver and Skull shaver.
Please help.
-
Hey, jimmyc!
I recently started using the Wahl 5-Star Balding Clipper. It's well-made and will clearly last a long time (if you take good care of it). The clipper does the job quickly and easily. Some people have complained on Amazon about being injured by the sharp blades, but so far I've avoided that by using it carefully and correctly.
Without a clipper attachment, it takes your hair down to roughly a 1-day's growth. There's a tiny bit of stubble there, but in the eyes of most people, it's a sharp, shiny, bald head. The 1/16" attachment that comes with it is also nice for leaving a little more visible stubble (That's the look I go for if I'm doing a band photo shoot or something... it's a bit more "rock n roll" to have some stubble haha).
I really love it, and don't plan on switching to anything else anytime soon.
-
Wish i could get one in the UK to try!!

Thanks for the review. I'm still not convinced about wired clipper. I'm looking for a wireless device that can cut my hair to 0.0mm or very close to that. I'm still reading up more on this one.

Andis Clippers
1.Andis BGRC (These Clippers Have Detachable Blade So I Recommend You Buy The Blade(s) That Range From #000(Shaved Look)-#00000(Completely Bald Look))
2.Andis BGRC+ (These Are The Same Clippers As The Andis BGRC But These Are Cordless)
3.Andis BGRV (These Are The Same Clippers As The Andis BGRC+ But These Are Faster)
4.Andis T-Outliner (These Clippers Are GREAT For Giving You A Close Shaved Dome)
5.Andis Outliner II (These Are The Same As The Andis T-Outliner But These DON'T Have A T-Blade)
I have a question about this, actually. I've recently went from long-haired to bald in the past year. (Thanks, cancer!) So to make up for the loss on top, I decided to grow a nice mid-length beard; about 3 inches. Thing is, my Panasonic shaver doesn't cut it anymore. Pun intended. I want a nice electric trimmer to use on my head in between my shaves with Head Blade, but also, I need it to do dual-duty for beard-shaping.
I originally wanted the Andis BGR+, but I've had a lot of people say it is not good for beards. I've heard the T-Outliner recommended for that purpose. They say it is great at getting fine detail. But how good is it on the head? I know you can't stick a 000000 blade on there like you can with the BGR+, but has anybody tried it? Am I more likely to get nicks and cuts from the T-blade?
I'd appreciate any suggestions from you gentlemen. I made an account here just so I could ask this question. I don't make a lot, so it would be nice to know I'm not wasting my money.
Thanks in advance!
-
Welcome, Bald Beard!
First, prayers for a speedy recovery-and victory-over cancer
Second, I have had my Andis T-Outliner for more than three years. It has cut real close giving me the impression of a clean-shaven head without the razor during the periods I could not shave with a razor. I still can feel a light fuzz, as only a razor will get you smooth, but they are excellent IMO. That said, be sure to get some clipper oil to keep your blades sharp and they can last a long time. My (occasional) barber also swears by the Andis series. Good luck and keep us posted on everything!
-
Thanks for the reply, Sir Harry.
Also, I'm actually in remission already. I received radiation and chemo at the end of last year, and all the recent scans show I'm clear. Still, I appreciate the kind words!
-
I use the Andis BGRC with the outliner, #000000 blade. This blade is .1mm, so it leaves stubble twice as short as the #00000, which is .2mm. It's advertised as leaving about 5 hours post razor shave growth for the #000000 vs. 10 hours post razor shaved growth for the #00000. I can easily use this blade with and against the grain all over my head for a very shaved look. Good alternative if you like having just the tiniest bit of stubble rather than totally smooth. I bought the non-ceremic blade for the #000000 as the ceramic blades are a little scratchy when used against the grain.

Can you use them every day without too much irritation? I've had good success with clippers, but I found I don't like them for everyday shaving. And I'm trying to find an everyday solution that's quicker than shaving with a blade even if it's not quite as close.
-
Sometimes I use my Remington 3 blade foil electric shaver. Yes, I can use it everyday, and it's ALMOST as close as a razor. Never any irritation.
-
My bad guys for not follwing up with y'all I've been busy. I now use the Andis T-Outliner and I bought a modified blade so it shaves the hair down very very tight. Just about a day's worth of growth. I use it on my customers all the time and I also use my Wahl 5 Star Shaver if my customers doesn't want a straight razor shave but wants their head bald. Plus Reddog the BBC fits you well!

In the barber school I attend we have switched from the Wahl 5 star to the Andis foil shaver. They are more reliable. I use them every day on clients and they shave heads really well.

Yes, they do. Not quite as close as a blade, but like three hours after a blade shave.

Thanks. That sounds awesome.

I've been wanting to try a foil shaver as an occasional alternative to a blade, so following the good advice here I picked up an Andis Profoil Lithium. Just tried it and I'm very impressed with the tight, smooth result, almost blade close.
I did notice some friction between shaver and my dry head, causing some minor tugging and skipping of the shaver. Should I be using a product like Williams Lectric Shave for a pre-shave conditioner? This is all new territory for me so what do you recommend as a skin treatment for foil shaving?
Thanks guys.
-
Just joined and thought I'd give some feedback.
I've used Wahl Balding Clippers for years, they do a great job getting down close. I've used the headblade razors a few times and they're good but I wanted a close as possible shave without using razors.
That's when I purchased the Andis Profoil Lithium Foil Shaver. These are amazing - the shave feels as close as you can get!
Wish these were sold in the UK, I had to order mine on Ebay from America and bought a 2pin to 3pin plug converter for charging.
For anyone thinking of purchasing a new head shaver I would highly recommend the Andis Profoil.
-
Hi guys, I wonder if you can add anything to my thread on Andis Profoil and shaving ??
Cheers :@`

Skull shaver, best out there. Super fast, super bald
-
I tried skull shaver and it's so far the best. However, the quality of the product is no there yet. I've ordered a unit with 2 x spare blades just over a year ago. Tried to use the spare shaver heads and it wouldn't fit in the unit. It's completely loose and therefore unusable. Just now I went to have a hair cut and the unit has stopped working. Unfortunately, I'm in Australia and the support from skull shaver is non-existent. I sent them an email to tell them about the spare heads I bought which is unusable a while ago but have not heard anything back from them at all. Don't get me wrong their product is great, but the quality of their product is really bad and the company also lacks customer support, so I won't be using their product anymore.
Enough rant. Can anyone here recommend something that is similar to skull shaver?
-
Does anybody still use WAHL BALDING CLIPPERS.?
-
Hey all,
First post here.
I just bought the Wahl Balding clippers and I used them straight out of the box without adjusting them. I was able to do my head fine and it got sandpaper-y close, but the neck was a little dicey and I had some minor irritation.
I adjusted them a tiny amount (I think the blades were actually over the guard a fraction of a millimeter) and now I can use them on my head, face, and neck without issue.
They are powerful, too; nothing like those beard and body trimmers that you've gotta run over the same spot a dozen times.

Cuts very close then?

Just signed up here. I remember scanning through this thread a while back as i was looking for a new electric razor / clipper.
Still am. I tend to prefer the 1 - 3 days growth look (after clean shave) and was looking to pick up something that would let me maintain that.
Is there any general consensus on what the best option is? seems to be a lot of mixed opinions. Whilst the wahl balding clips appear to be the most well known, ive seen some not so great reviews.
The foil shavers i saw mentioned seemed to be more what i was looking for
something like: http://www.barbergear.co.uk/shop/andis-profoil-lithium-titanium-foil-shaver/
think i must of found it and bookmarked it form when i first browsed this thread. Curious if many have experience with using foil shavers to get a close shave on their head?
-
I still champion the Wahl balding clipper. I see lots of reviews on people who seem to cut themselves. I ask myself how they are using them. I've been using mine for a year on and off and I've never cut myself once. I use them very quickly too. I can do my whole head in 5-10 mins. It cuts to what I'd say equivalent to 1.5 days growth from sly. Leaves a rough stubbly feel and looks really good. Very powerful and strong clippers, if maintained properly, your grandchildren could use. Mine will probably outlast me. I love them. Never had an issue with them, cut evenly and consistently every time.
-
Dan , I find a foil shaver will not give the cut you want. It will be almost as short as a blade razor. I would suggest the use of a regular Wahl clipper , not the Balding clipper. Less chances of nicks and cuts. Also many have an adjustable blade .
-
Late to the party - but i've been reading posts on this forum for the last few months. I finally "Came Home" about 5 months ago or so. For me (black guy with wiry hair), my best shave comes from using Andis tools. I use the T Outliner to start and then i follow up with the Andis Profoil (foil shaver).
To avoid irritiation, I rinse my head with cold water or apply a cold water towel after I shave with the Liner. Once that's done and dry, i follow up with the foil shaver and then repeat the cold water/cold towel step. This keeps the pores tights and helps battle irritation. As a final step, I'll spray my head with witch hazel and then apply a restorative balm.. usually unscented cocoa butter.
i've been bump/irritation free and the shaves are smooth/stubbl free.
-
Guys which of the closest cut trimmers has the widest blade?
thanks!
-
as a follow up to my previous post. I still went ahead and picked up a foil face shaver, a top end Panasonic arc 5
prior to this i had decided to switch to fully bald (had been previously going no guard with clippers) and had also started razor shaving. But im still very pleased that i picked up the arc 5 as on those occasions where i dont feel like going through the full shave process (or if i have some irritation), this thing gets extremely close to a razor shave finish. It can require a few passes but the size of the head on it makes it still relatively quick as it covers a lot of area at once. Expensive too but that seems to be for good reason.
-
The Panasonic Arc 5 is my foil razor I use, it'll get as close as a wet shave I find but does cause irritation as takes a few passed in some areas if you like the super close skin only feel cut.
Going to try these out soon I think Babyliss supercrew cut clippers.

The Wahl balding clippers are good but not totally necessary, and not even the best option out there. There are several other really good ones that can get as close as you’ll ever need. Look how some of the top ones compare and you’ll see what I mean: http://menshair.guide/oster-classic-76-vs-model-10.html

Sly gal here.
Just wanted to give a huge shout-out to the Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro Self-Haircut Kit. I love this baby! I used the Wahl balding clippers before, but they were just too aggressive and I was kinda scared of them...and they were heavy to hold for that long. So I got the Remington HC4250 and it's battery-operated (Lithium-ion) and gives me multiple shaves per charge.
I love it because it's got a curved blade!
(https://i.postimg.cc/KzZ6tfjn/91-Iq0-CM78-L-SX522.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I haven't been worried about cutting myself once! I rinse it very well under a stream of water and the blades clean out without rusting or needing to be re-aligned (there's actually no way that I can tell for the blades to not be aligned).
While it's geared towards regular trims using guards for a variety of lengths, I use it solely for quick down-to-stubble sessions or for cutting things down enough so I can use my razor if it's been a while since I've last razor shaved.
It's so quick, easy to maneuver, with a great feel in the hand and lots of power to get through multiple sessions without needing to recharge. What's not to love?!
-
Lots of research and info collected and presented here for sure. Good info.
I have used a couple of different through the years and I've typically been loyal to the Andi's brand.
However, I thought I'd drop this off here just as a quick "mention" of this new product I came across last year.
This is the "Brio Beardscape Trimmer." It is quite an amazing clipper setup.
I purchased mine back around the end of last year and absolutely love it. Their customer service is stealth as well.
Check it out for yourself and you can decide.
Best of luck!!!
