Title: How Often ought I shave my head to keep the "bald" style ?
Post by: Bilko1 on August 28, 2006, 05:21:24 PM

As I am a fairly new "recruit" to the BBC "Army", how often should I shave my head to keep the "bald" look ?

I have been told by a barber that I should shave it every day to keep my head smooth & hair-free. How often do you shave your head ?

Bilko - welcome to Sly Bald Guys!

To be completely hair free on your head, you would need to do this about as often as you would your face.  So, if you have to shave everyday to keep your face hair free, then you'll probably have to have the same routine for your head.

If I want a completely hair free head, I have to shave everyday.  But, I shave every other day, sometimes going 3 full days if I'm in a hurry the morning that I would normally shave my head.  I'm completely bald by choice because I'm thinning and I have a small bald patch on the crown of my head, so I can go two to three full days and still have it look as though I'm bald by choice.  Anymore than that and it's evident that I'm going bald.

I use the razor every day or two during the week. On weekends, I let it go. Gives me a break from shaving.

Cheers,
T.

I usually shave everyday, I might slack on the weekends occaisonally. It depends on the time I get up on the weekend and what I'm doing the rest of the day.

lol too funny same exact for me... huge forehead, almost connecting to the bare crown, and around 3 days without shaving I still look bald hehe

 ???

The worst thing to do is shave everyday! There is nothing worse than razor burn on your neck or back of the head wear the hair is the thickest. Shaving my head for 10 years and I believe the optimum schedule is twice a week. No bumps, no razor burn, no irritation.

I personally shave every Wed and Saturday morning and that seems to work the best.

I've never really had a problem with irritation. Although, having a full head of hair naturally, I get stubble the same afternoon. Bugs me quite a bit. To each his own I say though.

I love it when my head is freshly shaven, and I always keep touching and stroking my pate for a while after
shaving - I sit on the couch and watch some TV or I'm online, and every now and then my hand moves (on its own, it seems) to my head and glides through it a few times ... aaahhh (sigh).

What I always hate are stubbles that appear a few hours after shaving (they become quite noticeable the next morning), and then I stop stroking my head so much. They just spoil everything...

Anyway, I try to shave my head every third day. Sometimes an entire week can go by till the next shave. When I first started shaving it was every second day (it was exciting to shave back then, but I never shaved every day, I was afraid it would create to much irritation for me. )
Now I always have to force myself to pick up the razor and get it done (but I still enjoy it when I'm at it).

Happy Harry, I totally feel the same way. I shave my head and my hands go on their own to feel my head. I shave every 2 or max 3 days. And I hate the stubbles too.

Oh yeah, and my hands play with my mustache too!!!
They go from none to much hair!

Me personally I can't stand stubble so I shave everyday...If I have a date and I shaved that morning I might even shave for a second time before I head out....It doesn't get too irritated if you clean your head with alchol before and after you shave, It burns like a mother but it keeps away the razor bumps

Its a daily routine for me typically.  Got real busy and a little lazy this past weekend and yesterday had a skate session at my favorite hill Hobby Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina...Its SICK by the way...

Anyway, my point in the story is I wear a full face helmet  on that hill and it was a little warm yesterday....putting my helmet on and off on every run just is so much better when the dome is Chrome!~

Here's the hill:

I shave about every other day. Sometimes I'll go 3 days, but mostly every other day. If I go much longer than 3 days I get what I call "velcro head" and it's all prickly. I prefer a smooth bald dome and when the  hair starts to grow in, it actually starts to bother me. I feel a lot cleaner, too, when it's all smooth.

I get a 5 O Clock shadow, and could shave twice a day, but my skin is just too sensitive for that type of routine.  I will delay shaving if I want it smooth for the evening.

About every three days keeps me happy. I feel like a hippy if I go over that (not saying there is anything wrong with hippies). Of course I also shave it for any special occasion or just going out with my wife. I like my head shiny, so I should do it everyday, I just dont think I could keep that pace up forever. Not to mention the cost of replacement blades........

I've found that if I shave against the grain I can go a couple of days between shaves.  The only problem is that when i shave against the grain i have some irritation.  If I shave with the grain I have to shave every day to keep it looking smooth but I have no problems with the skin.  This is the way I normally do it because it doesn't look too bad if i happen to miss a day and i can always make sure i'm clean and smooth if I plan to be sly and on the prowl one evening...lol

Since I started shaving I have found that every other day is the norm for me....and now that I have gotten into a rhythm i do both the face and head same time.....and like some of the others being it has only been since august i still find my self stroking the dome to feel the smoothness and also to make sure i did not miss a spot......kids love it the wife is so so but then again she will be an ex soon so who cares....lol...

And don't forget, you'll get a much closer shave if you wait at least an hour after getting out of bed to slick your dome...

Why is this??!?!?!?

It has to do with gravity.

Now, when you shave later in the day - after you've been walking upright for awhile and the fluid has shifted toward the feet already - your scalp is thinner because it's not as full of fluid, so the hairs are cut closer to the root and you get a closer shave!

Ain't science cool??

So who will be the first to use the excuse, ......sorry I'm late for work, I had to let the fluid drain out of my brain to get a close shave, .....hey looky there, its lunch time, see you in an hour.

Thank goodness I work for myself. I'm may have to give it a whirl tomorrow morning.

You will never have a better boss than yourself.  Not to jinx it, but the other day I told my wife I don't know what I would do if I had to go back to work for a bank or a consulting firm again.  I wake up, work out, have a cup of joe and bkfst with the kids before school and then walk all of about 50 steps to my office.....LOL!  For 12 years I commuted for an hour each way to downtown Dallas.  BLAH!

Being an independent contractor for the last couple years has been sorta in between.  I'm ready to really spread my wings, now.   Spent the morning talking to who I need to to sever certain ties while maintaining others.

Boy, the forces--whether logistics,  attitude or down right nay-saying--are like swimming upstream.....all conspiring to say, "You can't pull this off on your own."  It's exhausting.  Did you have that, Hawk, when you were breaking out?  How'bout you, Johnny?

The people that said it would be tough are those that still work for the large brokerage houses, and work their asses off. Sacrificing family and personal time.

I was fortunate to have a good following of clients. I've been in the securities brokerage biz and on straight commission since '99. When I went on my own in '04, it was scary for about 2 months until I realized that I'm doing the exact same thing I was doing before, but I'm doing it for myself now. Once you get organized, ie letterhead, computer systems, etc, you focus back on "the work." It's been great ever since.

I've been focusing on businesses that require more sweat equity than capital.  Though, my goal is to get a real estate investment company off the ground this year, along with everything else I'm doing.

Good luck Tyler!!! It's hard to get real estate started if you weren't on the ground floor to begin with. My wife's grandpa was in real estate for a long time out in Cali and would not buy anything except a corner lot. He also owned a fencing company for many years. He passed just a little over a year ago, but all of his kids are reaping the benefits now from his forward thinking.

Good for you, they say New Mexico right now is where Cali was a few years ago.

Thanks PigPen.  I'll check out New Mexico.  I don't think I'll be getting into the Cali market right away.  It's still overvalued a bit if you ask me.  I do like the southwest, since I feel a lot of baby boomers will be heading that way to stay warm in the second half of their life.

Santa Fe is still way overpriced too. People's families who have lived there for generations can't afford the property taxes anymore and have to leave their families homes that were built by their parents grandparents and stuff like that.

I shaved friday night and now again sunday morning. But I have a couple of nicks now which I haven't had on friday. Also my head hurts a little bit because the skin is really irritated.
I am going to keep on shaving but maybe only twice a week.
I love the smooth look (shaving against the grain) but if the skin on my head hurts a littlee bit every day or every other day might me too much.

Do you guys think that it is normal that the skin hurts a little bit when shaving after 2 days again? What should I do? Keep on shaving ... maybe every day to get the head get used to be shaven? Or should I just shave twice a week?

I shaved friday night and now again sunday morning. But I have a couple of nicks now which I haven't had on friday. Also my head hurts a little bit because the skin is really irritated.

It'll take a little while for your skin to get used to shaving... Even after almost 3 years, I can't shave more than every other day with certain exceptions.

If I do have to shave every day, I find that shaving oil works best!

I echo what Rob said.  But, also remember to try to minimize the pressure you put on the blade.  This much be the reason for some of the irritation and nicks.

Daily as well.    In the last week or so i've gotten somewhat into a routine of once when I wake up and once around 9/10 pm.    But that depends on how quickly the stubble returns and my own feelings that day.

I would say the most often I shave is every 36 hours (morning then the following night...then 36 hours later in the morning).

The main goal there is to allow the wallet-draining Fusions to last.

I can solve that problem for you RM, get a HeadBlade

I shave daily also.  Sometimes, not often I will go two days and three days is very rare.

Rob, pick up a can of Remington's Shaver Saver from Wal-Mart and spray a little of that onto your Fusion cartridge after use.  Be sure to shake all the water out and dry the blades first.  It will greatly increase the life of your blade.  I get 14 to 21 shaves with a single Fusion cartridge.  The Shaver Saver is for electric shavers but it works well on regular blades as well.

You're quite welcome.  Let us know how it works for you.  Remember though, I only shave my head and not my face with the Fusion so if you shave both, your mileage will probably vary.

I use the fusion and head blade and it gets a very close shave. The fusion is great for those rough spots and if you have facial hair it gets really good lines on the goatee.

Thanks keep it sly

Just checked out those Fusion blades Medicineman, I have to shave daily too.  Are the Fusions really worth the cost?  Been using Sensor Excel and get a good smooth shave if I apply pressure, otherwise seems to be stubble by evening.  Would be great to have something that keeps it smooth longer.
They are expensive but I believe they are worth it.  Everyone's hair grows at different rates though.  If I shave in the morning, I won't have stubble until late into the evening.  The Fusion is nice because I get the closest shave with it, I have never cut myself shaving with it, the blades last longer than any other cartdrigde razor I have used.   So yes, for me they are worth it.

I shave Daily.  I can not stand the Velcro feel on the top of my head.  I too am one who loves the feel of my sly head.  If I am going out and have time after work I'll shave again.

Ditto:  When I first started it was every 3-4 days.  Now I don't like even that sandpaper feeling of later in the day.  I shave every morning and again at night if I am going out.

Shave every morning before work and if I have a hot date, shave again that evening before going out.  The ladie's love the smoothness.  If you use a fresh, un-dull razor you can get away with it.  I heard a rumor that the patron saint of sly, Telly Savalas, used to shave up to five times per day to keep the look clean...

To keep it smooth, I shave it everyday against the grain. I use a mach3 and aveeno shaving gel or I'll use HeadSlick from Headblade (love it's tingly feeling). I may skip shaving on the weekends to give my scalp a break. by shaving everyday, the blades seem to last a little longer and it's less cleanup.

I love being slick bald. After shaving, i love to rub my head and love the way it feels against the leather headrest in my Jeep. So for me it's not just the look and attitude of being Sly...it just feels so damn good too.

I concur. I LOVE the feel of being slick bald. I can go a couple of days without shaving and I still LOOK bald, but I don't FEEL bald. It actually makes me feel nasty to go without shaving for even a day.

That is the hardest concept I have to explain to people, about why I shave my head.  I feel grimy when it is not shaved.  The best explanation I had so far way having stubble on the head is like not showering after you played 18 holes of golf on a fall day.  You may not really be dirty, but you just need to clean up anyways. ??? make sense to anybody else?

I'll second that, it's not the look, it's the sensation.  I have to FEEL slick at all times.

I absolutely hate it when I run my hands on it and they get stuck(ie the stubble returns).

I have started shaving when I wake up and then once late at night because I know how fast stubble returns.

Hey Everybody...

I've read so much here, that its not possible to give an original answer.  My two cents is, I shave about once every 3-5 days now.  I say now, because I used to have to shave once every 1-2 weeks (or until my hair has grown back long enough to use my head clippers).
Since I joined SBGF, I went out and bought a bottle of the HeadSlick cream and am totally sold on its ability.  Only one part of my head is sensitive and that's a half-dollar sized patch in the back.. and for that sake, I didn't like dealing with the irritation.  When I have some time, I'm gonna post my 'Routine', you'll definitely get a kick out of it.

Peace...

Socrates

I for one would be interested in the 45-minute routine.

45 minutes is what I allot to shower, shave (face & head), get all the rough spots, put in my contacts, get dressed and grab the car keys.

45 Minutes is a Long Routine.  I am pretty good about getting everything most days, but even on those days I have a Date I do not go any longer than 25 Minutes.

I was Ill a few days back, and I could not shave a day [due to dellerium].  I woke up the day after, and Damn I swore I had a 0/1 Already!   :P
