Title: How do you fight the "itch" to shave it all off and start all over again?
Post by: DoberDaddy on December 26, 2021, 03:15:12 AM
I am at the two-year mark, after shaving down a full, long, 3-year beard.

Right now the beard looks great, and getting lots of good feedback, but I am DYING to shave it off. The joke is that I always regret it for a few weeks.

I never shaved the mustache in the 37 years of being bearded. This time I am dying for a clean sweep.

Advice?

Are you going for the Amish beard (without mustache) or totally smooth like Mr. Clean?

Is hard to fight against the desire, once you think on shave your head or beard is over...you wouldn't be in peace until ia done.

Ah yes, I know exactly how you feel! Sometimes I see a guy with a shaved head and face that looks great, then I think how clean it looks.

But, one year ago, I thought it would be a good time to go clean shaven for the first time in 35 years. I was mostly staying home because of the pandemic. So one morning I got out the trimmer and I immediately knew it was a mistake! I definitely did not like how I looked. Well, I thought I might as well take a razor to it while shaving my head.

So, I learned my lesson, and probably won't try that again. But, just like we tell new headshavers, it grows back. Funny how I love wearing a shaved head, but not a shaved face?

So, @DoberDaddy , sometimes it's hard to fight the urge, and you just have to scratch that itch!

Every "bald and bearded" man should try go Mr. Clean at least once in their life's,be truly BALD.

The first time I shave my beard as a bald man didn't like it too much and let it grow again immediately.

But some months later, after try a lot of beard styles decided to do it again and like it.

Is great to rub your chin and go until the nape and feel nothing except for smooth shaved skin.

I was thinking of a clean sweep... but might keep the mustache. Not sure. Still on the fence. New BF loves the beard... so, we will see.

Just think long and hard before shaving - you know how long it takes to grow back.

But if you do, consider going down in stages (and post photos for us).  You could trim to a shorter beard, then maybe carve out a large circle beard, then a biker (horseshoe) mustache with a soul patch, then without the soul patch, and then solo mustache.  Maybe live with each style for a week or so.  That may be less "shocking" and cause less regret since the change would be gradual over several weeks.  It would also give you some photo history of how you look with the different styles and what style may become your new goal when you do grow back.

I always tell guys with facial hair to have fun with it and change it as they like.  I also tell the young guys that still have a full head of hair the same thing, try any hairstyle you like, while you still have the option.

I have done biker staches and all sorts of goatees in the past. It's probably going to be an all or nothing thing. And then grow big, again.

When I first thought about shaving my face last year, I kept thinking about it too much. Everytime I looked in the mirror, I wondered  what it would be like. I know I looked much younger without my grey hair, but always wondered if I would look even younger without the grey beard. I'll add a photo, but don't laugh!

You will never know what you will look like, unless you go for it.

I did the same over the summer — pondered the idea of going clean shaven. I had a nice thick goatee going earlier this summer but was growing tired of it. So I started growing my beard back in but kept thinking how a clean shaven head and face would look nice and clean. I like it on other guys. So I took it down in stages. Shaved the beard but kept the goatee. Then I shaved it down to a mustache and soul patch combo and then I did just a a mustache. Nice thick one… chevron style which I really liked. I also realized to grow a nice mustache you need to let it grow a few months. Then I did the deed and went fully clean shaven. Like every guy I was like “what the hell did I just do”. Then I committed to stay clean shaven for several weeks. That took longer than I realized to get used to it. The look finally grew on me…bald headed, clean face. I kept it a couple months. I liked the look and going back into the office was nice too… so I polished my office look with pressed dry cleaned shirts and nice trousers. Definitely polished. Heading into winter I did grow the beard back but keep it trimmed close. But this year was a fun year on experimenting on facial hair. I say experiment withchange and have fun.  I will say getting rid of the grey facial hair was refreshing. And I’m contemplating on going back to a clean shaven face again.

@reddog you look like a totally different person, I prefer the goatee.

I will probably not do anything, for now.

It's also too damn cold to go around with a bare face LOL.

The last time I went for a clean-shaven face was in 2008. I did it because I thought my beard was getting too grey - although looking back it was nothing compared to the amount of grey I have now.  I kept my face clean shaven for about five months but I just could not adjust to the look.  I decided that a grey beard was preferable to no beard, and I’ve not been tempted to shave my face again.

I am afraid of how many chins I may discover under there.  I have had different styles, but my chin has been covered for over 25 years, and I only had one back then.

@DoberDaddy , I think you looked great bald with the mustache! I think if you were clean shaven you would look 10-15 years younger.

If I ever shave my face again, I think it would be a good idea to keep it shaved for 30 days. Just like we suggest to new headshavers, it would give you time to get used to the new look, then decide to keep it or not.

@slybeard thanks... I don't have one of those thick, lucious, natural handlebars that I so crave. It takes too much product to keep mine in place.

@reddog thanks for the compliments, I can't shave... my skin breaks out in terrible rashes.

I have had a beard since before i shaved my head, so i have no clue what completely shaved would look like.  i do occassionally see someone and think maybe it would be a good look, but that feeling never seems to last, lol

It’s a great look on some and terrible on others.  There doesn’t seem to be any in-between.

Told BF thoughts of shaving beard... showed pics of just mustache.

The look on his face said it all.

So that would be a NO! LOL

Can't fight it man!  Once the urge sets in, it's in and doesn't leave you alone until you shave.  Two years is a long time but it is what it is.

I vote for not fighting inches - it can be fun to indulge them! Last year I wore a full beard for about six months and then one day I took out her of clippers and cut the whole middle out of it into big mountain chps and to my surprise I got all kinds of compliments!  since then I’ve gone to a cowboy stash and I’m back to a goatee when I shave my head again at the end of the month I’m gonna go to something between a full beard and a goatee with a beard fading to zero as it moves away from my mouth

Change is good!

Well, maybe for you... we fight urges all the time. I just keep looking a the pic of my fat face... that is enough to dissuade me.

Well, for some reason, I've been growing my hair for almost 5 weeks. Finally long enough to see the white hair. My dermatitis issue broke out a couple of times on the sides and back, so I've had to shave them to stop it. The longer it gets, the less I like the fine white hair. It's a constant fight of the urge to shave.

So yesterday, I went to lunch with some friends. Of course, sitting right behind me was a guy with a beautiful shiny shaved head. We both went up to load up at the buffet, and I complemented him on a great haircut. We chatted for awhile, and he said he's been shaving for 20 years. So, I kept sneaking a few looks at him, and now I have a huge urge to go back to the baldie. Funny how something like that can trigger those urges. I think the only thing stopping me is the 20 degrees below zero weather here.

Maybe instead of a total shave, a change in beard style may satisfy the itch.  Something like a little shorter, lower cheek lines, or a big goatee/circle beard.  You have very good beard growth and coverage, so any facial hair style would work for you.

The last time I shaved my face was in 2008.  I did it because I didn’t like the grey that was starting to creep into my beard.  I maintained a shaved face for a few months but I just could not readjust to it. Eventually I decided that a grey beard was better than no beard at all.  I grew it back and I have never been tempted to shave it off again.  It’s significantly greyer now than it was back then, and I still struggle with that but shaving isn’t an option.

Getting use to a naked head and face is challenging. I went with a clean shaven face for a couple weeks. Then this past week I Started to let the beard grow back. I think facial hair frames the face nicely. But like Razor X I struggle with the grey hair.  I looked at some pics of myself with the naked head and face, and i do like the look. So I’ll probably shave clean again. But like I said, it is a challenge to get use to it. And being pasty from winter does not help!

How is gray hair a "struggle"? Disease, homelessness, poverty, are all struggles. I can't see how gray hair being anything that approaches a "struggle".

I've heard a lot the phrase "The struggle is real", guess doesn't have that serious connotation.

Have grey hair, specially if you dont like it can be problematic.
I dye my beard and it grows so fast that that grey roots appears in less than a week

My dark hair started tuning grey in my late 20's. By the time I was 40, it was mostly grey. Never really liked it, but coloring it never looked right and was a pain in the butt! So when I shaved my head at age 58, it was a pleasant surprise not to see that grey head. I know my beard is still white, but not having that grey hair definitely makes me look younger.

I started going gray very early, mid 20's for my head hair and around 30 for my beard.  I have been keeping dye in my beard for years, and like Tony, the white roots start showing in less than a week.  I just turned 60 and decided maybe it was time to let the natural gray come in, so I am in that process now.  I did try once before and just did not like the way it looked gray and started the dye again.

I would not call it a struggle, it just is what it is for me.  I have used dye for some many years that it is just routine.

Different people have different things that they struggle with: aging, weight, body image issues, etc. Just because those issues aren’t catastrophic doesn’t mean that they aren’t challenges for some people.  That’s the whole reason this site was created: to help people who are having difficulty dealing with hair loss.  Nobody, aside from the occasional over-the-top hysteric, is saying that these concerns are the end of the world. But nonetheless  they are real and valid concerns for many people.

@slybeard , I think I mentioned before that I tried some spray in temp color in MT goatee one time. I liked it, and thought about permanent color, but I think my friends would really give me a hard time!

It can be a hard habit to break. But eventually we all reach an age where we are expected to have grey hair and it can look a little strange if we don’t.  Everyone has to decide for himself when it’s time to stop; the right time varies from individual to individual.

Razor is right ,there comes a time when coloring beard or head  looks to obvious or unnatural. Plus its probably not healthy for your skin or what else. And the weekly application is problematic in my opinion. I tried it and decided natural is best and easiest.

When it gets grey and brittle?  Now that's a real struggle!  I know so many people in this world have much worse struggles but grey and brittle hair is just one of them.  I just can't razor shave in the winter!  I have tried.
