Title: If you could go to live in another country....
Post by: The Scottish Ambassador on March 07, 2009, 04:46:29 AM
....where would it be and why?

Come on guys, whats your story?

I would love to live in the US. I have had 2 holidays there (with a 3rd on the way) and I love it. The sights, sounds, atmosphere, the quietness (when you want it), the biz (when you want it).

I didn't even have to think twice on this one.  Ireland all the way.  In fact I have been investigating purchasing a home in the west of Ireland where I could spend the winter months once I retire.

Holland would be my first choice because of the excellent social climate.  The west of England near Huddersfield, if England wasn't so bloody expensive.

I guess it sounds cheesy :D  but I really wouldnt want to live in any other country: though I'd rather live in a bigger house in the country with plenty of space around me (if I could afford it!)

I don't think I would like anywhere else but the U.S.  Perhaps somewhere else than Texas. Someplace with four seasons.  All we have is Fall, Summer, Summer and Summer

Minus the economic situation and current administration..The United States of America is still number one in my book. Only other country I have thought would be interesting to live in is Australia.

The southern part of England would be nice, or around Aix en Provence in France.  The problem is food, too plain in England, much too good in France for sustained existance.

I can't imagine living outside of the U.S., but if I had to pick it would be Greece and likely the island of Tinos.

I'm now living in the capital Ankara but I would prefer to live in Istanbul. But if I was asked to go to another country I would of course choose Germany probably Köln.

Can't say I would want to go anywhere. I've always wanted to go live in the Arctic for a couple years though, just not permanently.

Definitely Ireland.  Not so sure I'd want to spend the winters there, though.  But I suppose it beats all the snow you get out in Illinois.

Two countries I haven't been to that I would love to visit are Ireland and Greece.  Places that I have been to and might enjoy living for a while are the UK and Italy.

But I love the good old USA and certainly see this as my permanent home.

I'm not sure what country it is.  Bora Bora? Tahiti?

It's where they have those really nice vacation cottages built on stilts out in the harbor.  Clear blue water, warm all the time.  I would live there.

Despite what's happening now, I'd have a hard time leaving the USA. However if I had to, the Lovely Mrs. Schro & I cruised around Spain for two weeks before we had kids. Both of us fell in love with the country. The people, the pace of life, the weather, the food & wine. We especially loved Marbella on the southern coast (in Andalucia).

There are a number of countries that I'd like to visit, but for home I can't think of anywhere but the good ol' U S of A -- especially now that we have an administration that's not a complete embarrassment*.

* It says a lot when hammerdrill and I can have completely different opinions of our leadership and yet respect each other's opinions and the right and freedom to have them, and even be friends (even if just on an Internet forum). That's what makes this country great.

LOL! A lot of people in this country seem to have lost the ability to have polite political discussions, or even find the humor in it. It's nice that this group seems to rise above that fray!

Thanks BB. While I have serious significant doubts about Obamas presidency, mainly his trend toward socialism and the plans of over-taxation of those who actually create jobs in this country,  I appreciate you respecting my views as I do yours. You are right ..no..RIGHT..about respecting each others opinions. One of the administrators informed me recently that one of our more liberal members took issue about something I said on another thread about Obama. Maybe I was a bit overboard on what I said but  unfortunately this person did not have the GUTS to PM me personally and tell me why they thought I was wrong. But as you said..that is what makes America great. It is possible to agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

As many of you friends said it is difficult for one to leave the country he/she has grown up. Especially it's hard to get accustomed to the culture of a foreign country. I have been to many cities including Amsterdam, Köln, Paris, Brussels, Brugges, Barcelona, Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Florence, Rome, Milan, Athens, Thessaloniki (the birthplace of our leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk), etc. but Istanbul is kind of different. In Istanbul you can see an unlicenced shanty and a luxurious residence with Porsches, Ferraris, Mercedes' parked in front of it, on the same street. The city really tells you many different stories from different cultures such as Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. With about 15 million people living in it, Istanbul is a city of contrasts, hosting both the richest and the poorest, the revolutionary and the conservative, the black and white together. I'm not telling these to praise my country. For instance Ankara (the city I live in is one of the most boring cities available on earth as there are only governmental buildings and shopping malls (no sea, no natural beauties, no attractions etc.) There are just some old ruins left from the Hittites, and the Roman Empire. But as I friend I can really recommend you to come and pay a visit to Istanbul if you ever have a chance. I ensure you satisfaction and great memoirs. I'd like to finish with some photos of Istanbul, some of them from the objective of the maestro Ara Güler, showing scenes from the old Istanbul days. Here's the city encompassing two continents. Best wishes..

I really like South Africa.  I had a chance to move there when I finished grad school, but I decided to stay here and start and engineering career.  My wife loves Latin America, and we've talked recently about moving to Ecuador or Guatemala for 6 months - 1 year.  But right now we're concerned about getting jobs when we come back, so that idea is on hold.

Mrs. Mvmnt and I have been discussing where to live after we move out of our new house (moving march 27th!) in 10 or so years, and we are discussing moving to her home country of Brazil. Either to Sao Paulo or Rio Grande do Sul. Its a beautiful country, and its, well, putting it bluntly, bad ass. haha. The environment and the atmosphere is something else.

But needless to say, leaving the US, no matter the political scene, would be extremely difficult.

I LOVE the USA and can't even imagine ever leaving it. I love everything that we stand for and in many respects are.

As the mighty Booted Bear said..... where else can you have differing opinions that you can relate so freely to others? I share many of the same political opinions as Hammer but that doesn't mean that I can't like people who feel differently.

Back during election time I had some nice discussions off line with Darrell (Red) about politics. Darrell and I probably couldn't be any more different but our discussions were respectful, educated, and even pointed...... I admire him for his differences. My point? So what....we're different. That's what makes the USA great.

MOST of the people aren't the problem....... the politicians, in both major parties, are the problem.

One more thing....... Hammer made the point that someone complained to a Mod about a point he made. For goodness sake guys.... we're men here..... Politely PM a guy if you have a problem with a post he made. My guess is that the majority of the time a couple of PM's back and foth will clear the air.

I love the USA....but if I were to live in another country, it would be Canada.  Admittedly I have only been in British Columbia.  But I like Canada for several reasons, my dad's ancestors were from Quebec.  Also Canada would not take too much adjusting too.  I know it is not exactly like the USA and has a uniqueness in some of its' culture.  But I would really love to live in Vancouver, BC.  It is so BEAUTIFUL!!!!!  It is like Seattle on steroids.  The mountains are WAY closer to downtown, which makes for a beautiful backdrop.  In fact, when you travel north from Vancouver, the mountains hug the ocean all the way up to Alaska.  So you have this big city perched on the edge of the wilderness.  Plus Vancouver is the home of the 2010 Winter Olympics.  I was fortunate in the 1980's to live just south of the Canadian border and get up there often at that time!  Here are some pics of Vancouver!

I have been thinking about this alot since I am at the age where I am not really "tied down" with anything. When I was in high school I took a Russian class and thought it would be great to live there but then I talked to some people and they said its not as great as it seems. Then I was thinking maybe Canada because its still close to the US and all but its too cold.
Now I am thinking about either Australia or Holland. Australia because its beutiful there and so exotic, warm all the time, and it just seems cool. But they have tons of poisonous spiders and snakes, its hot all the time, and they have almost no aviculture, by that I mean they only have a few pheasant species and the breeds of domestic poultry they have are nothing compared to the US.

Holland because its a nuetral country and very pretty also, they have loads and loads of aviculture and some of my online friends live there that are basically bird geniuses. They have all of the birds that alot of people in the US can only dream of. The downside is that its cold, I would be far from family and friends,  and they mainly speak Dutch.

If I had to move anywhere in the US I have been thinking maybe Texas, its warm and lots of exotic game.

As a current resident and Citizen of Australia I can say that It is an absolutely awesome place to live. It is a lot like American in the respect that everyone is allowed their freedom of choice, and the people here are extremely friendly and supportive. The weather is awesome year round and the beaches are too! As for the deadly spiders and snakes etc...yes there are certain species of deadly snakes, but If you really want to find one, you would have to travel to the center of the desert to even have a chance of running into one, there are spiders around in summer, but contrary to popular belief, they are harmless and most people leave them alone...;)

My best friend is from Holland, she always says that you would be surprised how many people in Holland speak near perfect english. It may be a nice place to visit though, even if you didn't want to live there.

My best friend is from Holland, she always says that you would be surprised how many people in Holland speak near perfect english. .

This reminded me of my very first trip to Europe, and we'd usually take a half day or less tour of the major cities to get oriented to the place.  At the end of the morning tour of Amsterdam one of the ladies in our tour group commented to the young woman who was our guide and spoke unaccented American English, "You speak English perfectly!"  Replied the young lady, "We have to, not many people in the world speak Dutch!" ;D ;D ;D

I think of that young lady very often when some in our country get on a soap box and in their own fractured brand of the Bard's tongue to condemn anyone who doesn't speak "English" in America.  The Dutch are world traders, one of the largest seaports, if not the largest, and they understand at a very fundamental level that to do business in the world requires the ability to communicate in the customer's language whether in the Netherlands or abroad.  They are like many Europeans, Asians, etc., who all learned English to trade with America.  I wonder if anyone in our country is seeing a pattern?  Just a thought, not a challenge to anyone's beliefs!

Thats funny that you say that. I have been slowly learning dutch from various sites that have info that I want so I go to a translator and figure out what words are what. I was talking to my genetics friend and was practicing some of my Dutch and he said that I speak 'chicken Dutch' that only poultry people would know. Then I went to a Dutch poultry message board and asked for help with my Dutch skills and everyone there spoke English and said that most people there are multi-lingual.

Now I just need to start looking for potential employment and housing and many other things. I am pretty sure I dont want to stay here in Eastern Washington, the snow was all melted away then the other day it started snowing again and now we have like an inch of snow with strong winds and a high in the upper teens. I hate the cold, lol.

Holland isn't a neutral country.  As a member of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Org) they have troops in Afghanistan.  You might be thinking of Switzerland, which has not fought a military conflict since 12-something, or Austria, which has neutrality as part of its constitution (since the US helped them write the post WWII constitution too).

Austria, as a member of the EU, may arguably not be truly neutral anymore.  But I would visit or live in all three of them if I had a job lined up there.

If you were to pick one non-native English country that had the best English, I would say it's a toss up between Holland and Sweden.  They both speak excellent English, and have American English shows broadcasted on their televisions (many other of the stations overdub their native language).

I would say in Europe, the farther north you go, the greater the amount of English speaking ability is present.

Maybe I was thinking of Switzerland. The more I am in this cold weather the better Australia sounds, lol.

After the last 2 days out on the boat I remind myself why I live in FL. I don't know where I would like to live but it would have to be near the water and a nice climate. I'm thinking somewhere in the Caribbean

Napa. Outside the states i'm gonna have to agree with Paul and pick somewhere in southern Ireland like the County Cork area. I also would consider Prague.

It would probably be the land of my ancestors, Nigeria. As economically unstable and politically corrupt as it is, many of my relatives live there. I would never feel alone or out of place. It would take a lot of convincing to get me to move there permanently though.

My other choice would be Ireland, as I love the culture. It would have to be a Gaeltact (Irish Gaelic speaking) region. Those parts of the country have a very traditional feel. It would also be cool to always be the center of attention since those areas don't have any Black people, hahah.

I wouldn't leave the USA unless necessary, and if it were, Australia would be my best choice.

In the USA, I would like to someday own a cabin buried at least double digit miles off the nearest real road, with no power and a huge garden and stream. All I want is to live out my days on this earth in God's beautiful forest creation until He calls me to heaven.

I didn't even have to think twice on this one.  Ireland all the way.  In fact I have been investigating purchasing a home in the west of Ireland where I could spend the winter months once I retire.

Definitely Ireland.  Not so sure I'd want to spend the winters there, though.  But I suppose it beats all the snow you get out in Illinois.

Can the winters get that brutal?

Is anyone familiar with the process of dual citizenship? I would like to become a dual citizen of Ireland. This is my back-up plan if I choose to leave America. With all the continual hate and violence in the U.S., I'm definitely considering it. Besides loving the culture, it would be great to live in a country where national peace non- corrupt politicians are more realistic.

Everywhere seems to have its trade offs unfortunately.  Canada is getting weird politically too.  I Like Italy and France, beautiful places with history but expensive and different rules.  Hang in there friend.

Oh yes, I would like to visit Canada. I've never been and always heard nothing but good things about the country.

The US doesn't recognize dual citizenship.  They will continue to treat (and tax) you as a US citizen unless you later renounce all rights to social services.  They will now allow you to re-enter the US using and different passport.  You will have to continue to use your U.S. passport to enter the US.  If you renounce your U.S. citizenship then you can be just like any other Nigerian.  (but it is not nearly as easy to gain residency or citizenship in other countries as it is in the U.S.  (Good luck trying to get residence or citizenship in Mexico or Australia!)

Huh?? I was asking about Ireland NOT Nigeria. And what do you mean by "any other Nigerian"?

Years ago I lived in two European countries as part of my job. Living abroad gave me a different perspective on the US. People in both of these countries knew more about the US than we know about their countries. They follow American politics and actions closely. Both countries have a high standard of living and a good quality of life. There were clear differences between the US and those countries, but both were good places to live.
