Title: Chicken
Post by: adam_r_todd on January 22, 2009, 04:52:58 PM
I planned to go sly soon.  I was waiting until I went on a vacation and then, that why, if I looked like a dork, I could grow it back before I had to go back to work.

Then, today, a coworker rubbed my balding head.   >:( I hate Male Pattern Baldness.  I wanna be sly.   8)  But I'm scared.

My wife will kill me when I shave.   :x! But I think I'm gonna do it anyway . . .  What's the worse that can happen?  Why wait?  Who cares if it is -10 degrees  (I live in Ohio).  The little bit of hair I have couldn't possibly keep me from freezing.

Please encourage me.  Tell me how great it's gonna be . . .

First, welcome!  Secondly, I was buzzing my head just because I hate paying $16 for a haircut.  One night I was shaving my face and thought "What the hell".

Imagine my wife's reaction after I got out of the shower.  At first she didn't like it, but after 20 minutes she was all over me! >:D  She likes to rub my freshly shaved head.

That was over two years ago.  She loves it.  Just do it and she what she says.

Good luck dude!

I was in your shoes for 2 years.  Finally got up the nerve to shave my head slick (4 months ago today actually) and will never go back.  This week alone I've had 2 guys with MPB comment on my look and say they've been thinking of going sly as well.

Send that chicken packing...or better have him for dinner!   #ng^y

...why would your wife kill you?

A few months ago I told her I wanted to shave my head and asked her what she thought about it.  She said, "I'd kill you."   I'm not really scared of her.  She's not gonna leave me after 9 years of marriage because I shaved my head.   :@` Well, maybe not . . .

Good advice guys.  I'll kick the chicken and the hair to the curb.  Maybe this weekend.  I gotta gather the supplies first.  Sounds like a I need a good razor unless I want to bleed to death.  Once I do the deed, I'll post some pictures.   O0

Welcome to SBG bro !!    O0

My wife didn't want me to shave my noggin either but after doing the deed she absoluetly loves it !! Just go ahead and do it and give her some time to adjust to your smooth shiny dome. Make sure you give it at least 30 days, that will give you time to adjust and give her time to really dig it !!   O0

Good luck  to ya !!

Welcome, Wannabe ~

You wannabe Sly, you've got it in your head.   That itch won't stop until you scratch it.  You look good with a buzz, and guys who look good with a buzz invariably look terrific Sly.  I predict your wife will first say she doesn't like it and then will be alllll over it.  Give it a go!  All you have to lose is about 1/8" of hair!

Welcome...you're already pretty close to being SLY...another 1/8-inch of hair won't be that drastic of a change. It feels great. Ask her to help you do it. You might be surprised!

The first time I told my wife, she was the same as yours.  She begged me not to do it.  She didn't leave me....lol

There are a lot of opinions as to what works best, but my personal favorite is a Fusion and HeadSlick.

Good luck!

Hey bro, I cannot tell you how great it's going to be.  I'm sorry about that.  I cannot tell you how great it's going to be because "experience is the mother of wisdom".   All of us here can tell you how great it's going to be but you will not quite understand it until you shave your head yourself.   You will know what I mean when you shave your head.    I can tell you that you will be surprised at how much happier you become.
You will wonder why you are so happy when all you have done is shave your head.  A weird feeling bro that even I myself cannot explain but somehow your happiness increases exponentially!!! (that's from a guy going through hair thinning).

Wannabe,

Welcome to SBG.

Many of us where in your shoes at one time, wanting to shave it clean but hesitant.   My wife actually wanted me to do it, and had been trying to convince me for about 2 years, unsuccessfully.  But, after joining SBG the guys here convinced me to go for it after only 2 weeks.   I only wish I'd done it sooner.

Hopefully, your wife will come around.   Shave it clean and give it 30 days.  You can always grow it back.

Andrew

Ahhh, yeah, one of those things. Well, if you end up dead, we have the proof that she threatened you. We'll get her locked up. So make sure that she knows that.

On a side note, she'll probably love it.

Cam -- that's funny stuff.  I never thought about having evidence to convict her if she does kill me.  Now I'm safe.   :D

Mikekoz13 -- Thanks for saying I'd look great sly.  Only one real way to find out.  Yes, that's me in the pic.  (The one on the left.  The other guy is my 2 year old. ^-^)

You guys make a great point.  I already have a buzz.  What's another 1/8 of an inch?

I have 7 and 5 year old daugthers.  Not sure how they'll react.  Probably rub my head all the time.  My 2 year old won't care at all.

I've read some posts about how to do the deed.  I'm gonna get some Head Slick and a Headblade.  I've seen 'em at CVS.  The 1/8" comes off this weekend.   O:O  Gulp.

I'll try to post some pics . . .

Don't be too stuck on the HB, as numerous guys here can attest it can be a tricky tool.  Fusion is my tool, never a nick in 15+months O0  Tried the HB--didn't do it for me although some swear their Domes by it.  Enjoy it.  And in the event your wife does try to kill you, it will make a great movie script.  Not as unique as the Mr. & Mrs. Bobbitt story but still a story :D :D :D.

Too bad I won't be around to profit from the movie script!

Thanks for the advice about the Headblade.  I'll try a few different things and probably develop my own preferences.  By my read of the posts, there's no universal agreement about what is best.  I just can't imagine shaving the back of my head with a straight razor.  We'll see . . .

I didn't say "straight razor" :/O!  A razor like Mach III, or Fusion maybe.  Even safety double edge razors require a lot of dexterity.  Straight razor--keep one of those in the house and the movie will take on a really dark flavor.

Hey wannabe... listen to the Bro.s here.  Some really great and sound advice. My wife wasn't all that enthused (but man... she loves rubbin' the nog now!  My sons love to rub Dad's dome and pich his "Neck meat".  The ladies at the store will stare with... ummm....envy for your wife!  Go for it!  But go easy.  You may get bumby and rashy and cut up before you get the hang of things (but then, you may not!) If you are worried about the wife, I understand. Mine is trying to kill me off with cookies!!!  Maybe let her be a part of the experience.  She could do your neck and back of head???  Good luck and welcome.

A belated welcome.

As for going sly I say 'Go for it !', as you've said it's only a tiny scraping of hair you'll loose.  O0

My only bit of advice would be to take things slow and steady the first few times you shave your head, you'll soon pick up speed but rushing is the easiest way  to get nicks and miss bits.  8)

i say its a keeper.   now... U must "wear" the chrome dome look 4 a total of 30 days.  it's the "unwritten" rule in the SBG FORUM.   after the 30 days, the new headshaver will solidify his decision 2 keep their new look or grow it out.  99% decide 2 keep their new look & become sly 4 life. O0

Wannabe ~  with a mug and dome like that I can't even imagine you'd want to go back to hair!  Great head shape, which in its smooth version really accentuates your facial features and eyes.  I bet you haven't heard one negative thing from anyone (well, maybe from your wife until she gave you a good rubbin').

As to being a little shakey about the Sly attitude -- it comes but you need to keep it shaved, and give it a little time.  Seriously, it looks terrific!  Hang in there.

Like the guys here say:  shave the dome for a month then see what you want to do.
In that time you'll get a shaving routine down, adjust to seeing with people (both friends and folks you don't know) as a bald guy, and most importantly the wife and kids will get to be familiar with the look and the feel.

You look great so that part shouldn't bother ya.
