Title: Virtual head shaving dilemma- anybody with experience?
Post by: AJB1015 on March 26, 2012, 10:14:48 PM
Hey guys, here are two pics of me, one is me and the other is a bald version I got from a virtual headshaving site. I've been highly considering shaving the dome or at least buzzing it to deal with my loss of locks. I really like the bald version, and if I were sure that the real thing would look like that I would do it in a second. Problem is, I can't help but doubt the accuracy of this thing, and still fear that a shaved head wouldn't be reasonable look for me because of the shape. Has anybody had any experience with a virtual head shave? Did it look like the real thing? Can I pull it off? Thanks guys. This site is awesome.

From your photo mother nature is telling you that sly will be arriving soon.  Grasp the nettle, shave down and put a big smile on your face.  Confidence is all.  Try the 30 day rule after shaving.

If the pictures are any indications, you also would look better bald.

I hope you're right, I've decided to shave this June when I go on vacation... the anticipation is killing me!

Asher. anticipation is killing you.  Don't wait for June.

If you see my posts from this past winter, I was going to shave my head when my wife went on her winter vacation.  Anticipation. I jumped the gun and when ahead early with the shave.

One comment on the pictures.  The facial expression on your photo, with hair, looks like you are ready to shave your head (sad).  After you shave your head, it has a tendency to put a smile of your face.  It will doubly look better.  Notice most of the guys have a confident smile in their profile pictures.  That's a plus.

The virtual headshave is what it will look like.  You'll rock the look.  Go for it sooner than later. Those of us who are bald by choice, know what you're going through.  It's not that big a deal.  (Now, time for me to head to the shower and shave bald again for today!)

You'l look great.  June is a long time away.  If you have decided to give sly a try, just go ahead and do it - or buzz down to a very short cut which will give you a close idea of what you'll look like.

Virtual head shaves give you an idea of how you'll look, but they can't show you how you will feel.  We can all attest that a shaved head feels incredibly good.  Why wait to experience it?

You look like a very young guy but it is time to make the move. I would do it now if I were you. That way, by June your head will already be "seasoned" and not look white compared to the rest of you head/face that has seen the Spring sun.

And this leads to a word of caution for both you and Nassauguy. Get a good sunscreen and use it when in the sun!!

Great advice.  8)

I agree that you would look and feel much better sly.

I agree with npsbg.  The feel of a shaved head is incredible.  The first day or so, you'll think that everyone is looking at your head.  The first day that I shaved, I got a dozen comments on my bow tie. Nothing about my shaved head!

There you go.  You don't have to wait until June.  Kill the anxiety. Do it now. Then by June, you'll have a tan on top and won't look pale white while on vacation!

No need to wait. You should shave your head clean right away.

The virtual head shave may give you an idea of how you'll look. But when you have a real head shave you get two real benefits, which the virtually head shave will never give you:

the confidence of being out and about carrying your new look
the great smooth feeling after you've shaved your head

there's only one way to find out...

Why are you going to wait 2 months to do the deed.  Do it now you will look and feel great.  You have a great shaped head and really nice eye brows.  Don't wait shave it now, you look very handsome sly.

Everybody, I just buzzed my hair with 2.5 clipper length all over my head. This is the shortest my hair has ever been since I was born. It looks great!! Thanks for everyone's advice, you guys really gave me the courage to do this, even though I am now wondering why i was so scared. I am much, MUCH less apprehensive about shaving my head now, and realize that when the times comes it won't be a big deal. Thanks again for everyone's positive comments.

Glad you like it and that buzzing down helped relieve some of your apprehension.  You might want to move in stages: next try a tighter buzz like a 1, then go with no guard, and finally shave smooth.  It'll give you a chance to adjust to having less and less hair.

Thats the plan npsbg. Some of the guys suggested shaving right away so I can have a natural color on my vacation. The truth is I'd rather be pasty white on my vacation than be pasty white at my job! I plan to be fully shaved by the first day of summer.

Looks good, AJB.  Will look even better when you shave in bald in June.

Fair enough on your comments about tan color on top for vacation, vs. now.

And I like your comment supporting the buzz as a good choice. The apprehension was not necessary. Same is true of shaving bald.

shave it man, shave it... You will be thankful that you did it earlier... you look great in your virtual version. But man, who knows you might look better in real bald look of yours rather than your virtual version O0 O0 O0

I could listen to Motown all day, too.  Sometimes do. They don't make that kind of music any more.  Catchy tunes, simple little ballads, and rich harmonies/accompaniments.  Very singable.

Tomorrow I go one step closer to sly... a #1 buzz all over! This time I'm not as scared because the 2.5 definitely boosted my confidence. Although I still find my head shape to be somewhat odd, I'm moving past it. I've gotten nothing but compliments about the buzz! From both women AND men. I have to say I think it was an improvement and makes my hair loss less noticeable. I seem to be getting more attention from the ladies as well 8), including one woman who seemed  uninterested until after i got the buzz! It was like night and day. The idea popped into my head that less hair = more chicks... It seems true for me so far! After that comes no guard then on 6/1/12 I shave bald. I've been worrying about mpb so much less recently, and I owe it to this site for giving me courage. Can't wait to stop worrying completely!! I really do thank you guys and this forum for all the wisdom and positive reinforcement. I really don't think I would be as optimistic and confident if it weren't for SBG's. I'll be sure to post pics after the fact. Wish me luck!

So glad SBG has been helpful in some way !  Sounds like you are accepting premature MPB much better and that is important !  Good Luck and keep us posted with your new experiences (with the girls, family, friends) and pictures !

I'm glad we're able to help you along.  Sounds like you're adjusting to things pretty well and others are receptive to your new look.  You may not realize it, but you're probably coming across as more relaxed and confident since you aren't worrying about your hair anymore.  Women find that very attractive.

As we'll all tell you, there's a step change in self-confidence when you go sly.  The trepidation about how you'll look and how others will react gives way to a feeling that the sly look is just right. And after a short time, it feels completely natural to be bald - so much so that you'll forget what it was like to have hair.

How was the 1#buzzcut?
Title: Re: Virtual head shaving dilemma- anybody with experience?
Post by: AJB1015 on April 23, 2012, 06:44:19 PM
To be honest, i still haven't tried the #1, have just been clipping with a # 2 twice a week. Although I do like the look of less hair, here's a couple reasons Im still hesitant to go shorter, even though I am gonna shave it during my vacation in june: so far, nobody has commented on my mpb, and most were surprised by the buzz cut. Despite an overall positive response from friends and acquaintances, some people have said that it makes me look like a criminal and a skinhead. I don't take these comments too seriously because they're good natured for the most part. My ultimate issue at this point in going permanently sly is having to answer to everybody. Has anybody had a similar experience? I don't like having to explain why i look a certain way. Right now my plan is to keep buzzing till the mpb becomes a bit more pronounced, then shave it all off for good. Before I started losing hair, I wore my hair longer, so everybody who hasn't seen me in a while asks why it' so short. I'm amazed that no one has mentioned balding, but as many of you must know, its tough to tell people you are losing your hair. If I really love the sly look in june I'll keep it, but for now it's gonna stay at #2 buzz. Eventually I'll have the true slyness that everybody here loves so much! Baby steps...

Just my 0.02...we get haircuts/shave our heads to make ourselves look and feel good...not for comments from the peanut gallery, even though you're going to get those anyway, and it looks like you're handling it well. People who are so obsessed with others hairstyles need to go get lives anyway. However, shaving your head is a life-changing event and everybody handles it at different levels. So if you need more time to go all the way, I respect that but I'm just trying to say don't let others hold you back from something that you want. Remember, the poorest man in the world is the one whose pleasures depend upon the permission of others....
