With the 4th coming up quickly, I was wondering what everyone recommends for bug spray? With all the rain we have gotten here this summer those mosquitoes are out in force.
-
I cannot help you but I hope someone can chime in.

I reallly dislike bug sprays. My skin always reacts badly to them. It actually "burns" my skin. Having said that, we have to use it here in the midwest. I find that I have the least reaction to "skintastic".

Avon makes a product called Skin So Soft. It has a nice smell, no Deet, and somehow keeps the mosquitoes away. It's a little bit oily feeling and I suspect that the bloodsucking little bastards don't like the feel of oil on their little mosquito tootsies. Once you are out of the line of mosquito fire it washes off easily enough.

BBBA, yea I agree with ya. Im not a fan of bug sprays either. I dont have a reaction to them. I just dont care for the greasy feeling and smell most of them come with.
We might try using the candles or something we dont need to spray this year.

I walk at a wooded park almost everyday, and I use OFF in the spritz bottle. It is scent free and not greasy at all. Mosquitos are know as the Minnesota state bird!

Thanks reddog. I might just give that a try.

LOL... When I was in the Army at FT Jackson SC we use to say that the misquito was the state bird there as well. :XX

@ksshane- I remember the mosquitos at Ft. Jackson as well. Spent the summer there in Basic Training from July-Sept 1975.
2nd Platoon C51.
I try to stay away from bug sprays. If the bugs are really bad, I'll wear a wide brimmed hat with a fine mesh bug netting that comes down around my head.
I'm going to have to give that homemade bug spray a try.

Here in Michigan we breed mosquitoes by the ton! lol I am in the club of not liking bug spray, especially the smell. But I can concur on the effectiveness of Skin So Soft. It also doesn't smell too bad.
I also use the scentless OFF in the spritz/mist bottle. I usually wear a hat to protect the dome as I hate spraying that crap up there ;)

Issue in my yard is not mosquitoes but rather ticks. Any solutions other than wearing a tick collar ?
-
How about wearing a hat.

Mosquitoes were a big reason why rolling up the sleeves were forbidden in the Army about 15-20 years ago...I use deep woods off in the dry version.Very effective and not greasy at all.

Thanks for the tips Red dog and Sir Harry. I will have to try the home made insect repellent.
