Title: Yes, no, maybe?
Post by: reddog on July 20, 2016, 09:51:37 AM
I'm thinking of trying a handlebar. I just took a,quick photo in the hot Minnesota sun.

It just ain't fair!

Here I have been trying for a few years to cultivate one, and you get that excellent result just from contemplating it.

Seriously, it looks good.

It looks good.  Handlebars can be fun, and versatile.  One misconception about handlebars is that you have to spend time every day to style it into shape.  But on most days, I don't do that.  I simply comb it to the sides and let the tips blend into my beard, and sometimes use a blow dryer just a few seconds to keep it from falling into my mouth.  And on days I choose to style it, I can curl it up in a tight curl, or go with a more relaxed curl.  If I want, I can go with a different look every day just by changing the mustache style a small amount.

Cave, your photo looks like you have enough mustache length to style it if you want.  Just give it a try.

Slybeard, do you use any wax or anything? I used a little styling paste. I assume there is a "training period" involved.

Many different waxes are available and they are all different.  Other products work as well.  My mustache is rather hard to style, and the natural curls are in the wrong direction.  For me, mustache waxes do not hold.  But two products that I have found that work well for me are Got-2-b-glued hair spiking gel, and the one I like best, is an Elmer's School Glue Stick (it really works and is non-toxic made safe for kids that tend to eat glue).  With either of these two, just apply a small amount, comb it in to distribute, hold it in place as you want it and dry quickly with a blow dryer in about 15 seconds (or skip the blow dryer and just hold in place until it dries naturally in 5 to 15 minutes).  Both wash out easily with water, which is another advantage over wax.

Some guys I know need a stiffer product like one of these while growing out their mustache, and then transition to wax when it gets longer.  And the longer it gets, the easier it is to tame.  Experiment to find what works best for you.

BTW, as for trimming - I only trim my tips once they get too long to style and look good, about every 6 months.  The center mustache hairs will reach a terminal length or 1 to 1-1/2 inch, and will not reach the tips.  So my center mustache hairs have been untrimmed in over 4 years now.  Some guys trim the center at the lip line and just let the tips grow, but IMO that leaves the center looking odd, and less full, compared to the tips.

I really like it both ways Reddog!  I think that your avatar photo is your very best look but I like your handlebar also.   So have fun with it and change it up now and then.

You are one of the lucky ones with nice evenly colored hair that allow you to do things like this.
