What is it about this look? I have had so many more compliments on my look, even outside SBG, than before......
-
It's a straight up boss look....I've been a fan of a shaved head with a beard since Isaac Hayes.

Isaac Hayes... now there was one cool, talented Dude.

You're getting more compliments because it's a great and striking look.
Keep going...

I like the look but not a massive fan of the redness in my beard. Wish I could find the confidence to wear it.

Red(dish?) beards are awesome. Go for it.
F77, you can try to understand the origin of the awesome power of the bald/bearded look, but your head may very well explode. Some things are better left undiscovered...
Just be glad you can harness that power for your own gain and awesomeness.
Looking great, btw. It's coming in very nicely. O0

If you could find the confidence to shave your head, you can find the confidence to wear a beard. I hear you on the red; I wasn't a big fan of my red facial hair at first, either. Like anything else, you get used to it. Nowadays I'd be glad to have some of that red back. :(
Give it a try. Without hair on your head at least you don't have to worry about the color contrast.

Mark.H, you seem like you can handle a beard if you want....I know the colour thing can be a pain, I'd like less grey.....

I have to admit that I do like being able to kind of look like a bald Santa. But I do kind of miss being able to look like I was in my 30's!

The Santa look isn't exactly the look I'm going for. :-[

Grey beards, balding heads.....a man just can't win anymore....sheesh

Here's the oldest photo in my iPhoto library of me from 1996. You can see that the gray was setting in even then...

So you were what, about 38? That's pretty much when it starts from what I can tell.
In a way, its kind of like MPB -- a long, drawn out process. The end result isn't too bad but the transition can be awkward.
-
Good math -- I had just turned 39.
-
I will give it ago, because I actually love having a beard, just get a little insecure. I think I will have the, 'don't give a sh*t' attitude from now on. Will keep updated on how I end up!

Mark, the man of many names, is back ;D ;D

Will keep updated on how I end up!
Please do! Looking forward to the results! O0

Give it a go - -
A bald head and beard complement each other - -They belong together - -
I was going to grow mine for a few weeks and a year later I still have my beard - - I love it - -It is part of me now - like my BALD head - -
-You will enjoy having a beard - - -remember you can always cut it off if you don't like it - -It will GROW on you .
-
OK, so latest pic is about a month in. I really like how it looks.....don't really want to trim it as yet..!

Looking good, but I would raise the neckline just a little.
-
Thanks Razor X....I was thinking it needed something sorted there

That beard is coming along nicely.
Might be time to visit a barber and ask for a shape and trim.
Then you can decide if you want more length on the chin. Ask the barber.
-
f77, looks great! I agree with Razor X. I also think you should raise the neckline a tad. Your beard seems to grow in faster than most... Perhaps it's a superbeard... or maybe it's just my warped perception.
Jules, I must say your beard is looking awesome! Great job, amigo! You've come a long way. O0

Ditto on that. I'm jealous! ;)
-
Thanks natedawg....not sure if it is a superbeard..it would be good though....perhaps I will have to go for a few more months to find out!?.....
Thanks for the positve comments and advice...
-
Natedawg and Razor X... Thanks for the beard comments.
Before April this year, had always been clean shaving on the face. This is my first beard. So thanks for the advice on growing a beard.
Visiting the barber soon enough. Just the smallest of trims on the sides, 'tache and neckline. But more length on the chin.
-
F77, lookin good man! That beard has certainly come a long way!
Jules man, that beard is looking awesome man, how much longer are you looking to grow it?
-
I don't know what it is about the look, but bald and bearded do just go together - everyone I know likes me better with the beard than without it. And Jules, you won't know what too long is on the chin until you get there! It looks awesome now, but you never know how much more awesome it could be until you try!
-
you won't know what too long is on the chin until you get there!
I'm still trying to find that medium... haha!
BBC56, I really like what you have going on, that is an awesome looking beard you have! I can understand why everyone likes it so much! keep it up O0
-
Thanks, Beardman! It is beards like yours that inspired me to grow it out 2 years ago. Right now it is in 'summer' mode but I will grow it out again soon. The 'stache is still in training - it will be 4-5 more months before it is totally grown out.
-
Jules man, that beard is looking awesome man, how much longer are you looking to grow it?
Thanks, Beardman.
Definitely growing it longer on the chin.
The rest might need a bit of trimming and shaping.
-
And Jules, you won't know what too long is on the chin until you get there! It looks awesome now, but you never know how much more awesome it could be until you try!
Good advice !
That is a fine moustache you have there. How much maintenance do you put into that ?
-
Thanks! I always wanted to grow this out too, but like the 30 day challenge, I hadn't stuck with it at first. In this case, it is more like a 365 day challenge!
Less maintenance than you might think; there is a place in Kansas that advertises 'the best moustache wax in the world'. They may be right. As I grew it longer, I waxed it every night with their 'stiff' product and wash it out in the morning. After about a month it started to take shape (at that point the longest hairs were about 1 1/ 2" long). I have been at it for about 8 months. . All I do is wax it at night and wash it out in the morning, and once a month I trim about 1/2" off the two ends. It will be about 4 more months until it is fully grown in - the hairs in the center are still growing out. Oh, and if I need it to look neat during the day, I use a little of their 'soft' product to keep the ends in place (particularly important in humid weather - humidity makes my hair curl a lot). In some ways, it is even more of a commitment than the sly look.
-
In some ways, it is even more of a commitment than the sly look.
It is well worth it though, and I bet you still spend less time maintaining the mo' then you did your hair!
-
Oh, THAT is so true! In retrospect, one of the happiest days of my life was the first time I got 4-5" of "styled" hair buzzed down to a 1/8". That was the beginning; sly is the end. No more hair driers, bed head, gels, combs (except for the 'stache), brushes, or trying to find the right shampoo.
TGIS! (Thank God I'm SLY!)
-
I find spending time maintaining this look is boosting my confidence and means I have actually started caring about how I look again.....for a while I haven't and it great to have that positive feeling back.

Fantastic! Caring about yourself is an important part of being a person. I'm glad to hear that you found yourself again!
-
I had the same change in attitude - got me back to the gym seriously and lost 22 lbs!
-
The beard gives great contrast with the shaved head, I just wish I could grow a full beard :(

Give it a try.
Until April this year, didn't think I could grow a beard either. Then look what happened.

Shaved mine off lol just didn't like it at all, I keep it trimmed, like designer stubble!
-

Never mind the designer stubble. Just look at the shiny head.
-
I thought about letting my mustache and goatee grow back out but decided against it. I figured that a grey beard with black eyebrows and no hair wouldn't look right.

Not necessarily. A lot of people never get any grey in their eyebrows. Try it and see how it looks.

Razor is a wise man. I'd heed his advice.

I have, no hair grows on the cheeks at all, did you have issues with that? i was going to try the not shaving the face for a whole month thing before I shaped it.

Don't have much hair on the cheeks either. But still grew the beard for a month.
After a month, you can always shave it off again.

Every beard has its weak spots. You just have to let it grow for enough time so you can properly assess. And if you can't grow hair on your cheeks, well that's what goatees are for. ;)

Well said. Beards take lots and lots of patience, especially to try and fill in the thinner spots... Definitely not an overnight thing.
I am one of those whose beard growth is sporadic on the cheeks, so I cannot sport a full beard, even though I'd like to... Make do with what you have!

That's it! Just make the look your own, you don't have to wear a 'traditional' style beard... I've seen some pretty cool original styles, that just seem to work... just like shaving your head, it is all about making it your own.

I have found out that your beard will not be perfect unless you are very lucky! I would like that mine grew in thick everywhere, which it doesn't...and I have a gap in my moustache area....Just making the most of what I have...and to think I could be clean shaven and have hair on my head...!?
-
I thought about letting my mustache and goatee grow back out but decided against it. I figured that a grey beard with black eyebrows and no hair wouldn't look right.
I am shaved bald, dark brown, black eyebrows and a close cropped gray beard. But I am old nobody is looking anyway. :)
-
Good start. At a month you'll definately have a good idea where it's going but remember although it can be less than 20 minutes to Sly, a beard needs two or three months for most guys to see what their beards will look like. Beards are patience. If you get some itching, yes it happens, try using hair conditioner at the end of your shower. Itching does end.
-
Looks like you're off to a good start.
-
Thanks mate
-
Looks good Mark, once you get past the itchy stage it is definitely worth it if that's what you want!
-
Looking more handsome with the beard Mark. You are lucky to have a choice between bearded and clean shaven.
-
Thanks guys. I appreciate your comments.
-
BBCMark,
you are certainly en route with your beard. As others have said here, if you are keen, there's another 1-2 months before you get a proper idea of the final look.
For instance, it took about 3 months to go from clean shaven to the beard you see in my profile pic.
-
I think bald and bearded looks very "manly" and rugged. I grow a beard in the winter months and shave it come spring.
-
no beard here but I do have a goatee under my chin and a sole patch under my lip
-
Looking good, Mark! Just gotta stay with it and let it develop...
-
I'm wanting to grow a beard like (https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F12%2F10%2F21%2F2u8ure3a.jpg&hash=1c4c5095e020d0901f650a5f28367ecdc4f447e4) how long we talking for something like that?
-
Mark
It looks great - -keep growing - - - It sure goes with our bald heads - -Nothing like a BALDIE with a BEARD.
-
how long we talking for something like that?
I believe the average growth rate is 1/4 to 1/2" per month, so it's at least 6 months. Remember too that all parts of the beard don't necessarily grow at the same rate--so it could take some time to get the mature look in the picture. Worth it though--you've got to do that at least once in your life, preferably while young so you can determine if you want to sport the look a lot.
-
Looking good Mark. Stick with it. Good looking dome too!
Wish my beard would grow in a little thicker. I have a Van Dyke thatI really like.
-
Mark,
Good luck with the beard. If I started 20 years ago, I still wouldn't have a beard like the one in the picture!
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWzPDNabdBs&feature=youtube_gdata_player cool video
-
Looks as though you have made a good start there Mark....sticking with it this time?
-
certainly am mate, hopefully i can grow as long as yours! ;D
-
Looking good, as always Mark :)
-
thanks kalbo
-
That's looking awesome, I've been debating on growing out a full beard again. One of my mates has dared me to do it... I don't know though... it's been soo long since I've had a full beard... Although yours had given me a bit more encouragement to give it a crack!
As to your question about how long, Mine is now about 16cm (6.5 inches), and I think I grew about 3-4 of those inches since I trimmed my beard in march or april. So that probably plays pretty close to the 1/2 inch in a month statement.
-
Great to hear that Mark...if this is what you want it is a great look. Bearman, go for it, I think you will be able to pull off the full beard...your inital support has got me here....

Wow, Scot! You're beard is coming in amazingly!

Any og you full beard wearers got any pro tips for getting that transition from the beard to your sly dome perfect? I tried doing it by eye monday morning and fudged it, so I just shaved it all off again lol

Good to hear that you are going to do the full beard! I am looking forward to at least letting mine grow out 6 months without trimming.
If you are worried about the transition point, if you wear glasses or have a pair of sunglasses, that can be a easy guide as to where to stop the beard.

I've been debating on growing out a full beard again.

Thanks SlyBear, I am still loving the beard...its definitely going to get a bit bigger to see how long is the best for me...not there yet!
Beardman, good to hear you are going to give it a try. As for the transition point I just let it come in naturally...but not sure if that is the best way or not?

It definitely will Mr Jules....going to grow it to the end of the year at least.

at 18-19 seconds in this commercial... this dude rocks the look so well!!!
-
A yes, "fish man". Noticed him right off the bat!
-
I'd go with a full beard if I could, but right now all I can do is a goatee and semi-mustache. Doesn't look bad though.
-
The fish guy does wear it well!

Everyone has to start somewhere mate, for ages all I could pull off was sideburns and a dirty little mo' but after a while I was able to go all the way to a full beard.
-
Never expected this thread to be so popular...I have still recently had doubts but have worked on through with them. In a few months if I am still here then I am going to be b&b for life...... :)
-
You'll be right mate! I'm sure you'll be b&b for life! Are you still doing the grow it out till new years thing or have you started trimming?
-
Hi beardman, I was going to let it keep growing but it was going through an untidy period, so thought I would trim it.....I think I went further than I wanted too.....what do you other guys think....I prefer the longer look in my avatar pic....that'll teach me to try trimming!
-
Good news, leave it alone & it will grow back ;). Trimming can be dangerous.
-
As someone who is not a fan of longish beards (and ironically likes the length in his own,) I would have to say don't trim. The beard in your avatar picture looks great.
-
F77, your trim is not that bad and it grows again.
I always trim with the clipper combs so i don't get too much.
-
.I think I went further than I wanted too.....that'll teach me to try trimming!
Lesson learned !
Think that's happened to many others on the forum, too.
-
You look good regardless.
I don't think there's anything wrong with a trim now and again to prevent looking wild and woolie. it's gonna keep growing so no harm done.
-
The beard looks fine. But if you are not happy with it, let it go for a week and you won't know it had been trimmed.
-
Ah yes... Every time I've trimmed in the past I've always been unhappy with how much I've taken off haha. As everyone has said, the best part about beards is they grow back O0
-

Might I make a suggestion ? If you want length sport a good scissor mate and only take off the ends of the beard that are split by weather and brushing and such. If you are out riding a Harley , or in the weather get some leave in condtioner . Keep it away from your facial skin it will get there in time any way. Shampoo and condition. I loved my beard when I had it but to old to grow another one. ;) 8) O:O Great Luck.
-
I've tried the scissors, but they feel really clumsy, just not used to working with them in front of a mirror I guess, I still trim my mo' with them, so I'm getting a bit better at it. But the beard isn't getting trimmed for a while anyways haha
-
Everyone has to start somewhere mate, for ages all I could pull off was sideburns and a dirty little mo' but after a while I was able to go all the way to a full beard.
Thanks a lot. That helps. I've been feeling... somewhat impatient that it hasn't developed that much... but I'm 19, I have time. When I haven't shaved my face in long enough there's a very thin vellus hair outline of a full beard, so I think it'll happen eventually... I'm just hoping I got my beard genes from my Mom's side of the family...
You know what? Nevermind. I'm already certain I did.
-
This entire thread is really inspiring. Not to mention, I'm extremely jealous of what Beardman has goin on there lol. I've always kept a fairly short trimmed goat. It's been the same since I was 16 or so and I'm thinking this is the year to just let it grow and see what happens.
-
That's awesome bro, I'm glad we've been able to inspire you! If you do grow it out be sure to share your progress with us O0
-
Incidentally, Beardman, at what age was it that you had developed the "sideburns and a dirty little mo'?" You're mid-twenties, right?
Yeah, I'd just like to know that I could go full beard before 30. And yes, I know it's different for everyone.
By the way, happy new year, everyone.
-
Yes mate, I'm 26.
The sideburns were the first things that grew in for me. I sort of started late at the whole facial hair game believe it or not and didn't get the sidies until probably 17-18.
The dirty little mo was probably coming in a bit later, but I wasn't really happy with my mo until I started growing out my beard alot, and I honestly think that's still my biggest fault with my beard, I'd love a rocking bushy mo'... butt beggars can't be choosers haha.
My first taste of the full beard was when I was about 20 or so... but I had (in my opinion a pretty poor attempt at a mo' haha). So I see no reason that if you were lucky enough to get the right genes you'd have a full beard before 30.
-
That's awesome bro, I'm glad we've been able to inspire you! If you do grow it out be sure to share your progress with us O0
So after some talking into it, I've convinced the girlfriend that this is the year of the beard. I'll try to take plenty of pics to track the progress of course.
-
LET THE YEAR OF THE BEARD BEGIN!
Good luck man, Best part about growing it longer is that when you get to the point you think you've gone to far, then you can just cut back to a length you find more comfortable... be warned though long beards are addicting!

Nice, if you don't cut it all year you will officially have a yeard! http://jefffsbeardboard.yuku.com/topic/17034/THE-YEARD-THREAD#.UOK9R5EaySM

Okay, thanks. Yeah, I've had sideburns since I was about 17. Well... not anymore, you understand. Anyways, yeah, seeing an awesome beard like yours makes me feel better about my own. Thanks.
VoodooSyxx: Yes, try it. It'll look good on you. And welcome to the board.

Made that mistake myself.

Thanks fellas. There are definitely some excellent looking beards amongst the group here. Although I'm at just two days of keeping the razor north of my ears, and already there's some mad itching going on, I'm sticking it out for the epic beard...any day now ::)

VoodooSyxx, beardboard.com should have people with advice on the itching.
