Title: August Sly Fitness Challenge
Post by: TyMoore122 on August 02, 2012, 09:52:45 AM
Welcome to the Sly August Fitness Challenge. I was very encouraged by the July thread, and it was a great inspiration to me and driving my efforts...Thank you all!!

Objective: Post your fitness goals for the month, check in with your progress, support others while they march towards theirs and enjoy the summer.

My goals this month are
1)   100 miles on the bicycle (includes 1 x 25 mile + ride)
2)   3-4 weight lifting sessions per week (with increase in weight across the board)
3)   20 Miles on Elliptical for the month (5 miles a week to mix it up)
4)   Increase Vo2max by 2 points (oxygen volume did get 2 points in July)
5)   Weight loss? Lets see what happens but go with 5 pounds.

Sign up and post your August goals….above all have fun and be careful, injuries impact goals….better to go light, than go home  O0
Cheers,
Ty

Just got back from the gym and I am feeling great.  My August fitness goals are gonna be similar to my July goals in which I am going to atleast workout 3 times a week.

I am looking forward to participating in the August fitness challenge.  I hope that you will join me and TyMoore in making this thread active as well as being active in fitness.

Beardman reporting in for another month!

I am glad we were able to help motivate you to reach your goals Ty!

My month is going to be one of recovery mostly, I would probably say I lost close to half the strengh in my shoulder, so it is going to be a case of slow and steady wins the race here.

My goals are for:

another 5kgs (11lbs) lost

Get my 2km row under 9min, hopefully I get it this month :P

To do my strengthening exercises twice every day, as per the physio's orders.

And to not do any more harm to myself this month!!! LOL

I have pretty much wrote this month off for lifting goals, I am just going to focus on getting my shoulder right again.

I am looking forward to seeing other people's goals for the month, they don't have to be like Ty's or mine! I really like Warhawk's goal, and there was a time not that long ago where that was exactly one of my goals!

Thanks Warhawk and Beardman....great to be tripping down this trail with you all....

Beard- I had popped my shoulder back in Feb. give it a couple weeks rest and work around it, mine came back in a couple months and has been strong as ever. Now a days it s the left elbow, I have found support braces to be my new best friends now that I am in my 40's and they have helped minimize the joint strain/pain a lot (use Nike brand).

Todays a big ride with my son, heading down the hill and through a couple valleys, should log 20-25 miles (Beardman = 40 Kilometers  O0 ).

Haha thanks Ty O0

20-25 miles is a great effort, if your day is anything like mine is shaping up to be then it is awesome weather to spend outdoors (even for a winter's day), now just to decide what to do with it :D

Supports are a good idea, I will certainly look into them.

Yup we are having great weather here, US Navy Blue Angels (I am a Navy vet so I like that) are in town a we are having our yearly Sea fair festival and hydro plan races.

We ended up covering 26+miles yesterday and hitting 4 towns in the process, I slept like a baby last night. I attached a shot my son took of his sweaty sun burnt father at the end of the ride. The sun block didn't do a great job as I have leopard spots on my head from the bike helmet holes....and my "little man" enjoying a smoothie.

We need to have some more sly guys check in here...and come up with a sly guy fitness club Tee-shirt :)

Off to the gym.....cheers, Ty

Time for a check-in, been too quiet out here!!

I have been doing pretty good against my goals, had to miss a couple weight lifting workouts due to a illness and had a bike crash 10 miles into a 40 mile ride training session with my son, other than a tore up left knee and elbow I am still up and running. Below are my numbers. One great update my son agreed to do the "7 Hills of Kirkland" memorial day weekend ride, its one of the premiere rides here in the Northwest and last Saturday we ran 3 of the 7 legs knocking out 40 miles and some strong hill climbs.

Duration   32:05   hours of training in August

Calories   17436   calories burned

Distance   207.5   miles consumed (1 - 25 mile ride, 1 - 40 mile ride, lots of 10+ mile rides)

Hows everyone else coming along?

Cheers,
Ty

I've spent nearly three weeks eating and drinking my way around Japan....

My gym membership expires on Thursday this week, so I'm joining the gym in the same building where I work and will join in for the September thread!

@Bluebriz:  Brian... sounds like U had a great time.  We look forward to your participation in September.

Hey Ty, hope you're feeling ok from that bike crash.  I'm checking in for the first time here.  My goal has been to hit the gym 3 times a week and I'm all over it.  I do some lifting and then cardio each time.  I'm working to get stronger and raise the level of health to the highest possible without any PEDs.

Welcome to the fold KG  O:O

Ty: That's some good mileage you are pushing there mate!  O0

I'm not sure if I am on track for hitting my target weight, I think it is going to have to be a big week next week to hit it, but I am keen as mustard, I am currently about 6 lbs off... and I have been known to do 5lbs in a week if I really knuckle down and try! So we will see   ;D

The shoulder keeps getting stronger every week, which is good  O0

But, I have broken my PB a few times this month on the rowing machine, which is excellent, I've only had 1 or 2 rows over the 9min mark in what almost 3 weeks now, so I am pretty happy with that!

Nope KG just a mutt of a Clydesdale  >:D

Hey Beard- congrats on the PB! That's what it's all about, I will probably land a pound or so shy of my target weight but hay still having fun.
Cheers,
Ty

Got to love technology...who ever thought a bike would have so many toys to play with  :P

From left to right-
1) Garmin 450T - main use is route and elevation tracking...but does a ton more
2) Cateye Wireless computer - provide MPH (real time, avg, max), RPM (Cadence and max crank speed), Miles (total, lap, trip) and more but those are key
3) Polar FT80- heart rate (real-time, zones, max, min, avg), calories burned, tracks my weekly totals against goals, and my
strength training.

Just more of the fun of working out in this day and age for techno geeks like me!!
Cheers,
Ty

Must say, I do enjoy a good gadget myself, I've not really got into fitness gadgets yet though, I did use Runkeeper app on my phone, but I had to delete it to make room... the old HTC desire doesn't have the room it used to...

Well done KG! I had en epic legs session last night, I lifted all my weights last night, I my proudest achievement of the night was my 260 pound standing calf raises! that was 2 jumps in weight on the old calf raise machine :D

I have not been hitting the gym as much.  But I have been very physically active because I have been cleaning up my company's landscaping the past few weeks.  So I think that qualifies as exercise.  As of this morning I have made my goal of losing 8 pounds a month.  So I am down to 212 and at the beginning of the month I was 220!

Garrett and I did the 50 mile ride Saturday, now my a$$ hurts :)

We did a nice 12 mile recovery ride today that was practice for the 7 Hills event we will run this May, its was 12 miles of that circuit.

Keep on, keeping on!

I did say I'd join for the September page, but I started in August anyway!  No point in putting it off!  Had good workouts Friday, Saturday and today (Monday).
I'll try and get 4 times a week to the gym, as well as throwing in some kettle bell exercises a few times a week at home.
Looking to tighten things up, lose some body fat, add on a bit of muscle and strength.
Starting a distance learning MA course late in September, as well as working full time, but have to squeeze in the exercise too!

Good luck guys!

Keep it up team Sly.

TY keep up those killer bike rides.  Man... that is a lot of miles.

Also... update on me is bad with no gym time.   With Hurricane Isaac being close by we have been experiencing bad tropical storm weather here so next week I'm gonna hit the gym hard.

Completely understandable under the circumstances Warhawk!

I might as well clock out now, being the 31st here down under.

I have fallen short of my weight loss goal by 4lbs. If I didn't have a bad week last week with the fast food I quite possibly would have made my goal.  :/O Oh well, gives me something to aim for next month!

I have also been consistently well under my goal of 9min for 2kms on my row!

The shoulder is coming along nicely too.

So even though I never made my weight loss goal, I still think I had a pretty successful month, to lose about 6lbs in a month is nothing to scoff at!

That's a damn fine month Beardman, you should target 1.5-2 pounds a week max anyway according to most research I have studied. Based on the above report you had a great month, keep it up!

Ty

I've found that as I have focused on more compound movements, such as the deadlift and zercher squats, I've reached my fitness goals a lot faster.  On the days that I am off work (tuesday in particular), I make that my leg day, and do those compound exercises with heavy weight, though preformed safely.  I large part of your muscle mass will come from the lower half of your body- once you increase the amount of muscle on your legs and glutes, you will burn more calories.  Since they have the most potential for growth, it makes sense you focus on them just as much as your arms or chest.

I've followed that for a almost two years now and I went from weighing 145 lbs to 209 lbs with a 30 inch waist.  Just my two cents.  Creatine and a low acidic fruit juice, coupled with a slightly larger than you burn a day caloric intake is the only way to gain muscle.

Good luck and I am glad to see so many people taking care of themselves.

Here is my end of month check in-

Hit most of my lifting goals, minus a couple days when I was down with a cold.
Bike total miles - 370, with several 35+ mile runs and a 50+ mile day thrown in. Tomorrow we are doing a metric century!!
Weight loss - exceeded with a total loss of 8.5 pounds.
V02Max gain 4 points which was much better than targeted by 2 points.

Only down side is left elbow is acting up still, looks like a checkup is in order once summer comes to a close.

How did everyone else do?

I will post the September kick off later tonight.
Welcome to the forum Savellij1!
Cheers,
Ty

Wow, well done Ty, exceeded your goals all round!  O0 I would certainly get that elbow checked out.

Welcome to the family Savellij1, I always love hearing about how other people do things, I am like a sponge, I absorb every bit of knowledge I can and use it where I can. I would say that my legs are my strongest muscle group by far. At the moment they are probably getting a better workout then my upper body at the moment too haha.
