Title: A Good Exfoliant
Post by: DC on August 15, 2012, 10:32:15 PM
I'm looking for a good exfoliant for the dome. Anybody here know of a good brand? Thanx,.

You'll get lots of recommendations ... a frequent one here is for St Ives Apricot Scrub (about $4 for a tub at Wal-Mart, for example). Good texture and pleasant feel and smell. I'm quite satisfied with it.

St Ives Apricot Scrub is a very popular choice.

HeadShed (http://slybaldguys.com/headblade).

HeadShed.
+1

This is good stuff IMO. Is gritty enough without being abrasive and it has a pleasant smell. Check out a Publix grocery store in your area. They usually carry it there. Hope that helps!

I use Clearasil "Deep Cleansing" exfoliator twice a week.  Most pleasing results.  Not sure if you get it there...

Another shout out to St Ives apricot here. I just recently tried it for the first time, and I loved it. Not too gritty. Leaves my skin feeling great. Like FG said, it can be found on the cheap side.

Another vote for the ST. Ives. Do NOT buy the generic brand... I tried that and it is NOT the same.

Thanx Gents.  I saw the St Ives at the local Walgreen's.  Will give it a shot.  Gotta keep the dome nice an' purdy!  ^-^

Headshed by Headblade for me. In fact it is the HB product I like the most.
King of shaves also carries some nice products, including exfoliants

I'll agree that HeadShed is quite good also. I've got a couple of bottles and use it now and then to break up my routine.

But as I've acknowledged elsewhere, I am a frugal FrontierGuy (some accusations might term it miserly) ... and St Ives (10 ounces for $4.88 including tax at Wal-Mart) versus HeadShed (8 ounces for $8.41 on Amazon with free shipping) ... well, there's not enough difference between them to justify the 100% price difference (49 cents per ounce vs. $1.05 per ounce).

Hello gents...I use an exfoliate put out by The Art of Shaving...its work great but it is alittle pricey!

St Ives has 2% salicylic acid which is a key ingredient for the best skin cleansing. I use it on my face too. Have tried many products and the best always have 2% salicylic acid  for cutting through oil, dirt and renewing the skin with a bit of aggressive cleansing power. I tried more expensive products with no salicylic acid and they dont work at all.

I agree, Headblade products are expensive compared to other products on the market that do the same job. I use Headshed cause I like it a lot, but that's it, besides of the S4 or Sport

Used the St. Ives last night and love it. From experience, when do you find the best time to exfoliate- before/after shaving? Or on off-times? Thanx again.

I follow the same method.

Having a smooth noggin, you'd then have a perfect surface to really get at the dead skin and dirt you're trying to remove with the scrub.

Doing it before makes the hair softer and gives you a more comfortable and smooth shave. The HeadShed recommends doing it before for this reason.

I do it every morning, before shaving. Just not too aggressive. I've been using abrasive soaps for 30+ years, as recommended by a dermatologist in my youth.

Exfoliating before shaving is working best for me lately.

I suppose it would keep dead skin from clogging the razor.

Just talking with the bald pastor at church this morning. He apparently got some older HB exfoliant which he said had a cinnamon aroma. Then bought some new and it did not smell as nicely.

Called HB and they said that a vendor when out of business. The new vendor makes a slightly different product, thus the change.

So if you are familiar with the older HB exfoliant, the product has changed in the past year.

Who sells the St. Ives Apricot?

It was in the past year, but the exact date is not precise. They were clearing stock of the 2 oz bottles and samples until they ran out of the old stuff. So for a while it might seem random which product you got.

I use Head Shed twice a week. I also use Dove body and Face wash for men, it has pumice or something in it. It keeps my head free of pimples and red marks.

I'm trying some. I was hoping for more of an apricot smell.  The fragrance seems minimal. I think I prefer the Head Scrub from Head Blade, but the St. Ives is not bad. Easy to obtain.

I found Headshed very rough on my head, and didn't really enjoy it. But St Ives doesn't seem to be anywhere near as harsh, I must admit I expected a more fruity smell to it.

I bought a Dove Men + care Active Clean , Dual sided shower tool, then use Dove men +care, deep clean soap for my whole body .  It has a great manly smell and is a good Exfoliant.  It also has 1/4 moisturizing cream.  Use it daily maybe twice a day.  Usually take a hot shower , shave with HB , Sport and Slick and then use my Dove.   O0  Super Great !

Guys.... try the Bee Bald "Clean" product. Outstanding cleaning and exfoliating with a very mild, pleasant scent. It's a little pricier than some other poducts but I use literally a pea sized drop on my big head and that is plenty to do the job.

Throw in the fact that the owner of the company, Dennis, is a top notch guy and it's an easy choice. NO.... I don't know Dennis but I've had some dealings with him and he donated free products to all the guys that donated to my Scotty's Ride event back in September.
He's a great guy that believes in his products.

I really like Jack Black’s Clear Complexion Razor Bump & Acne Treatment. The product has 2% salicylic acid as the exfoliating ingredient. This is the way to go because salicylic acid exfoliates the surface of the skin and inside the pores. It took me awhile to get used to this type of exfoliator because I was used to the feeling of an actual scrub. A little bit goes a long way and I only use it a few times a week.

I know a lot of you like the St. Ives scrub, but I’m not a fan. I find it’s too abrasive. The product uses ground walnut shells as the exfoliant which is not good for your head. Walnut shells have uneven edges which actually causes tiny tears in the skin. The damage isn’t something you see right away, but over time it takes a toll on the dome. If you prefer a physical exfoliant look for a product that has exfoliating beads or even fine sugar- these have soft edges and are gentle on the dome. Hope this info helps.

I finished my St Ives Apricot yesterday (and I really liked it) ... but today started a bottle of HeadShed which has a very fine grit. That was pleasing also.

I use an antibacterial soap and a loofah pad.

I find the soap significantly helped with pimples and ingrown hairs on my face/head. And I like the loofah pad as I can change up how 'rough' the exfoliating is just by using more or less pressure.

I too have used St. Ives (the one with salicylic acid) and Headshed with good results.  I've just gotten into the habit of scrubbing my head down pretty aggressively before every shave.  Makes things softer and easier, especially when going against the grain.

Like others have mentioned, the St. Ives is cheaper, but I like supporting Headblade when I can.  Plus, it smells like some magic chocolate hazelnut concoction.   I think Headblade needs to start marketing a Headshed flavored pastry.   :px
