Title: Winter is coming
Post by: Runningman586 on November 21, 2020, 08:33:16 PM
Since going bbc over the summer, I kept telling myself I would grow out my hair for the winter. So, I started to let it grow out, but couldn't last a few until I had to shave it back smooth. Have any of you guys found this dilemma? I find it really interesting that I now prefer being bald than having hair.

Oh yeah, I try to warn newbies about that! Yes, wearing a shaved head is definitely addictive. Over the years, I've tried to grow my hair back countless times. I usually make it a few weeks, then I can't stand it and shave it.

While I don't like how I look with white hair, I think I miss the feel of a totally smooth head more. Or I'll see a few guys with shaved heads, and I get bald head envy. So, us cold weather guys just have to get out the winter hats and enjoy keeping it smooth!

I’ve grown out my hair the past couple of winters after shaving my head.  I stopped shaving in September.  I couldn’t resist the urge to be bald, so I shaved again a little over a week ago.  The winters in Georgia aren’t that bad.  As a matter of fact, the cold air feels good on my bare scalp!

I also was getting a little bald envy lol. My family has asked me what I plan to do, but I don't think I can go back to hair yet. This might mean I'm hooked, and I'll be sly for the foreseeable future. I also agree that the cool air is quit refreshing!

Yes, runningman, sounds like you're hooked! Luckily, I'm at the age where I do what I want, dress like I want, and wear the hairstyle I want. I would like to have hair in the winter for warmth, but it's got to be smooth every day.

I'm retired so going outside isn't a big deal but if it's super cold and windy, I put on my toke.  I know a toke isn't stylish but frankly, who cares?  I also have a full face toke for when I use the snowblower because sometimes snow flies in my face.  So anyway, I don't have any need to grow my hair for the winter.

Yeah @reddog I've enjoyed the mental switch from liking hair to liking bald more. The sand paper feel is starting to drive me crazy. So, I've been doing daily shaves to make sure to keep everything nice and smooth. I've also been bald long enough now that people are starting to tell me they forget what I looked like with hair; whitch, I find kind of cool.

Yes if indeed; “ winter is coming”,  then don’t grow hair,  just, “send a raven”!

But seriously though it’s so much easier to wear a hat in cold weather with a bald head because you don’t have to worry about recombine  your hair each time you pull your hat off!

Hey everyone! Hope everyone had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! I'm 7 months being bald and loving it.

Winter hat question: This is my first winter being bald, and I live in Chicago, so I need some good hat recommendations. I usually wear a beanie/toque, since I need to cover my ears, but I'm finding that the ribs on the beanies are leaving marks on my head. Anyone have any good, warm winter hat suggestions that won't leave marks? I prefer beanie/toque style, but I'm open to other suggestions.

Thanks and be well, everyone!

@Jerome that's interesting that your hats are leaving indentations in your head. Since that's the case, I would say maybe lean toward something with a cloth lining. So, that way you can still have the beanie look on the outside, but have a layer of smooth fabric to protect your bald head. It also seems like we went sly around the same time too. Glad to know that I won't be the only bald newbie going into this winter season.

@Jerome , I found a great hat for winter. The knit hats wouldn't stay on my head, slid off without hair to hold it on. I found a "trapper hat". It is fur lined with ear flaps and it has a buckle strap for under the chin. I love it for cold days!

@Jerome Not sure of its name, but has same shape as baseball hat , is lined and has ear flaps. Comes in plaids and solid colors.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I probably just need to keep searching for one with a better liner. Glad being bald is going well for you, too!

I looked at them online and they seem like a good option. Thanks for the suggestion! Can you share a link for the one you found?

I’ve shaved my head off and on for the past four years.  This will be my first winter as a bald guy.   The forecast says a low in the 20’s over the next few days.  This will probably be a test for whether or not I keep it shaved.

Good luck this winter! Alas, the remaining hair I have wouldn't do much to keep me warm. :-)

@chuck63 , 20 isn't bad, we get -35 degrees here. Yes, it will be cold, but sometimes can be refreshing. You just have to have the right hat. I have never been a hat guy, so I only wear one when necessary. Needless to say, the hat comes off immediately when I'm inside, gotta let the bald head shine!

Yeah, we gotta wear some sort of hat regardless of the type because just as our fingers and noses are prone to frostbite ie exposed skin, so are our scalps.  Even when I had a full head of hair, I still had to wear a toke while working outside because I worked in a shipyard for a few years in the late 70s.  I believe something like 40% of our body heat is lost through the head even with hair, it's best to wear something to protect ourselves with whatever we have on hand.  The cold wind is a real killer though so I sometimes have to wear my hood on top of my toke.  However, I did the same when I had a full head of hair.  I don't think hair offers much protection, at least not in my case.  In the wicked cold weather, I even wore a sock on my head to keep me warm.  It ain't easy being bald but we do the best we can!

 Hello Jerome

I live in Chicago in the summer but I’m also here now for the entire month of December because I have some major surgery tomorrow morning it will be at least a month before I’m able to drive back to my winter home in Florida .

I wear a pull over beanie hat here in Chicago and I love it because having a shaved head I don’t have to worry about messing up my hair and having to recomb it every time I take the hat off!  I also like it because I can just jam it into the pocket of my jacket or some other hats would require that I carry them or put them down someplace where I might forget it.

The beanie that I wear is very soft and has no ribs so I think if you just find another hat that’s made out of a softer material and doesn’t have ribs in it and also that’s not too tight you won’t have problems with dents on your scalp !

PS.  Since we are both in Chicago we should get together sometime!

We had our first cold morning this season with a low in the twenties.  I didn’t notice being any colder with a bald head than I normally would be.

Hi Jerome,

I suggest looking for an alpaca knitted cap for your Chicago winter.  Alpaca is four times denser than wool, but lighter, softer and itch-free.  An alpaca cap won't be cheap - like in the range of $40, but it's well worth it.  There's a place in New Jersey called Wood's Edge Farm that raises alpacas and sells caps.  Check them out online.

I've been very suprised by the winter. My head hasn't gotten that cold like I thought it would. It actually been really refreshing.

I couldn’t agree more!  I had always let my hair grow in the winter because I thought my head would get cold.  We’ve had a relatively cold winter so far.  Like you said, I find the cold air to feel good on my bald head.

How's everyone doing in this chilly time? Have any of you grown out your hair, or have you embraced the cold with a fresh bald head everyday?

Well, I decided to try growing my hair again with this frigid weather, and it was the same as all the other times. After about 10 days, I started breaking out again in the back of my head. The only way to stop it is to keep it shaved, so I shaved the sides and back. A few days later, I didn't like how the top looked, so I cut it to a horseshoe flattop. As it grew, it just didn't look good, especially on a guy my age.(67) So I made it almost 3 weeks and yesterday I returned to a nice smooth bald head. It looks great, and I'm happily sly! At some point I have to stop trying to grow it back, I'm never happy with it, and always glad to have a shaved head back.

I still shave but always wear a toke when I go outside which I've always done anyway.  When the weather gets a little warmer, I'll venture out without a toke but I'll keep it in my pocket just in case it gets breezy.

I’ll have to say winter is here!  It’s currently 27 degrees in the afternoon here in Georgia.  We don’t get too many cold days like this.   I know that it’s a lot colder for you guys up north.   This is my third winter as a bald guy.  I let my hair grow to a short buzz for several winters before I decided to commit to keep my head shaved full time.  I’ve been doing some running around today and the cold air actually feels pretty good on my uncovered head.

The  head either needs to be shaved or at least a few days of growth to get out of the sandpaper stage. If you need to wear a a knit hat, sandpaper is the worst.

But agreed. A nice chill on a naked head is a nice feeling. I’ve spend many cold, bald headed days without a knit hat.

The great thing about having a shaved head is that it makes it so easy to put a stocking cap on and off and stay warm and not have to worry about messing up your hair!
We had a high temperature Christmas Eve of -2 and the windchill of 30 below !  That’s serious cold and if you break down on the side of a deserted highway you’re not gonna survive.  My poor service dog is it from Florida and she doesn’t like cold weather and with her we were walking through the frozen slush of the city streets of Chicago she started crying and limping because her paws hurt so badly from the cold.  So I haven’t taken her out since because I don’t wanna hurt her will just stay at home

@Semi-Sly you need to get her some dog booties, they are pretty cheap online and help with snow. Mushers wax will help with regular walks on ice or snow as well.
