Title: Will going sly make me look younger?
Post by: BaldBlindAt20 on August 21, 2021, 03:05:15 PM
10 days ago I shaved my hair from shoulder length to 2mm. After 10 days where I didn't regulate my facial hair nor hair on my scalp. With growing my hair a bit like my parents advised, I noticed that my hairline is not intact and that I may have lost density on top. Why do I care? Because people have told me numerous times that I look 42 (I am 20 as in my nickname), in many photos it looks like horseshoe pattern is showing, (quite like Jason Statham has lmao) so I am thinking about going sly. Especially would love any piece of advice from @reddog and @Razorhead because they look a lot younger than their age. If anyone is interested how I look now, just ask me in private messages

I don't have any experience with balding young. I didn't shave my head until I was 58yo. With very white hair, I looked younger without it.

Usually, guys that are already pretty bald on top, look younger by shaving off the fringe. I guess there is only one way for you to find out, by going for the clean shave. You're almost there anyway!

If you decide to go for the shave, we recommend committing to keeping it shaved bald for 30 days. It takes the long for you and everyone else to get used to the new look.

At your age, no.

But you will "age" more slowly since your look won't really change over the years if you keep it shaved.

2mm, isn't shaved, BTW.

Well but there is a chance when I go sly that I will look 27 for my peers and not 42? I bet it will be the case, I am tired of hearing I look like a father with my sons when I go out with people lol, also want to avoid girls with daddy issues.

Yeah sorry, I am accustomed to people telling me I am bald although my grown hair are now around 3mm

My wife tells me I look younger while shaven probably because I have so much grey.

Yeah I think I might want to go sly altogether, in photos I already see horseshoe pattern forming

There is no one answer for everyone.  But I would say that in general, a young man will look older when shaved, and an older man will look younger.  However, a thinning and/or balding hair will also make a younger man look older.

At 58 years old, I feel like shaving away my grey makes me look younger.

As for now I shaved my beard and hair to 3mm, people tell me now I look barely 23 and not 42 :D There is one photo which looks like I have gone sly and I think I look cool :D

This is exactly right. I first shaved my head bald at 28, I’m 32 now. I probably look like I’m in my late 30s/early 40s now, but I’ll look that way for the next 20 years as long as I take care of my skin.

The cold, hard truth is that unless you are shaving a full head of hair, your choices are limited to:

1. A head that is shaved completely bald
2. A partially bald head wit a pattern determined by Mother Nature

Pick whichever of those two you are more comfortable with and don’t worry about whether it makes you look older or younger than you looked when you had all your hair.  You can never get that hair back, so do the best you can with what you have to work with and move on.

Yeah, that seems to be the case concerning my balding lmao, I think I have 2 years max before I will be reduced to horseshoe. It's crazy that at 20 years of age, I can no longer have a haircut that my great grandfather had when he was 58, but thankfully I can go sly and not worry about balding anymore, something my father (born 1966, lost his hair in 90s) could not do.

And that is where you lost me. I was with you up until then.   ;D ;D ;D

Glad you are starting to feel better about the situation.

I am 35. I get mistaken for 28. Been bald since I was 29. I usually don't get guessed more than 32. And I'm average looking at best.

I've been shaving my head for around 20 years. A few years ago I thought about growing out a ponytail so I stopped shaving for about 6 months and when I would look in the mirror as the hair got longer I saw a much older man looking back at me. I'm 68 years old and when I am smooth up top people have guessed my age to be around 50. When the hair was growing out I looked like I was 80.

My wife says it makes me look younger.  She also gets mad if I skip a shave.  I shave because I want to anyway but her input is nice to hear.  If she said she hated it, then i'd probably show her to the door.

I was 100% grey by the time I turned 40, so when I first shaved my head at 59, no longer having grey hair was great! It definitely took many years off my appearance. I will soon turn 68, and when I tell someone my age they can't believe it.

So, yes, for some guys shaving can make you look younger, but maybe not so much for some younger guys.

If you're above 35,shave your head is going to make you look younger.

If you're under 35,is going to age you.

Wait,if I use the logic from Tony Dada's post, if you are 35, shaving your head makes you look 35, i.e., no change!  So that means a guy with a shaved head looks like he's 35 regardless of age!  At least that's what I hope because I am far beyond 35.

No Haha.

Young guys, looks older when they go completely bald.
But older men tend to look younger witha shaved head...35 was just a random number to illustrate haha.

Glad to hear you're still sly! You're proof that a shaved head is a great haircut for any age.

I was at the gym yesterday, and there were 4 of us guys there. Three of us had shaved heads! The other 2 baldies looked like they were in their 20's.

I notice more of us around too. I think the pandemic made people try experimenting with their hair and they realized that bald makes the most sense. I should have started shaving my head earlier than 29.

Well people universally tell me that I look older with a shaved head than Ido when I let a bit of hair grow.  Especially when I’m down here in Florida for the winter because there are so many old bald men down here that there is  nothing about a shaved head that’s “cool”.

I shaved mine march of 2020 and besides a few months here or there I've kept it bald. It's cheaper to be bald and takes less time in the morning especially when you have a palm shaver. I don't have to pay a barber anymore or buy shampoo or anything. Going sly was something I should have done years ago.  Also I'm 32 and I get clocked for 26 with a shaved head and short beard.

I am not sure about less hassle and less money argument. Shaving both my face and head takes up around 30 minutes every few days, whereas my hairdresser would just take up an hour every 3-6 months. Also, if you are not using safety razors but cartridge razors, the costs can be actually really big. I wish being sly were something less time consuming and easier to maintain, because I love the fresh feel of a bald head

@BaldBlindAt20 , I definitely agree, with a full head of hair, it takes a significant amount of time to maintain a bald head. That's for us guys that shave everyday. I can use a Schick Extreme 3 disposable for about a week. I always but them when there is a 3 or 4 dollar off coupon in the paper.

And yes, when you're in your 60's with snow white hair, shaving it all off makes you look younger!

I wish I had very light hair, I had these golden blonde hair which were darker than lighter. But I'm not gonna complain, when I am 35 I hope to be mistaken for 25 haha

Shaving does make you look younger. Even when your hair is thinning and silvery in color like mine, a shaved head is better than a buzzcut.

@BaldBlindAt20 shaving the head and the face takes time. I think that combination is on the edge of being a little too high maintenance so I’ll shave my head everyday but not the face.  I think skipping shaves for three days is also extra work. I find that I’m more concerned with getting every bit of stubble cleaned  off otherwise it looks sloppy. Shaving everyday can be more forgiving.

I am not sure about shaving everyday, also I would feel weird shaving head only. I love having smooth head and having smooth face ;)

I do not do the face shaving part, but I was able to get my head shaving routine down to 5 minutes or so after a lot of practice, and that was when I still had a full head of hair.  I was a daily shaver at the time, and I think you will learn to shave faster if you shave daily rather than every three days.  I also shave in the shower, so no clean-up.

I use the leaf which is a 3 blade razor that uses double edge blades snapped in half or single blades you can buy for very cheap. $20 lasts me a year. 10 minutes with my palm shaver gives me a clean scalp. If your doing face and head it's probably longer but yeah for me it's cheaper.

If you have gray hairs or really bad thinning, yes. But usually a bald man looks ten years older of what really is.

I’m 80years old and get taken for 80 . Well maybe a little less. Shave with cheap 2 blade disposable ,or pit bull gold. Two minutes with the PBG or about 5-10 with the razor. Head shaving is the fastest for me by far. Been shaving on and off since 2009.
