Title: Scalp Tweezing 101 - Advanced
Post by: balddan013 on December 28, 2018, 07:44:43 AM
I tried to respond to the Scalp Tweezing topics that were posted a few years ago.  Back in March 2015 looks to be the last update.  This bald topic has been sadly neglected.  I wanted to update my status on SBG and share my experience in being a dedicated scalp tweezer since early 2015.  If anyone is interested in the history of scalp tweezing and my results.  I would be glad to share photos, advice and have some good conversation.

Some basic history to get things started.   Scalp Tweezing has an ancient history that dates back to the Egyptian priests and aristocrats who saw a bald man as a sign of respect.  The aristocrats would rely on shaving their heads with from what I have read through history was done with razor sharp knives.  A slow process that I am sure was risky.  We have progressed to safety razors.  Scalp Tweezing was reserved for the Priests, who plucked out not only their head hair but all hairs a their body.  It required patience and dedication.  Picture is from a Hollywood movie but very accurate.  But, scalp tweezing seemed to be an ancient art and disappeared in modern times.

First things first.  Like in ancient times, Scalp tweezing requires patience and dedication.  Scalp Tweezing is not shaving.  I can't say that enough and you must always remember that.  It is a process of making your head bald. The best comparison or metaphor is the following:  I am a cigar smoker so I will use that.  I use it to explain to people who immediately say "Ah the pain!"  Scalp Tweezing is like smoking a good 52 ring cigar.  Takes time, you enjoy it, and have a great experience.  Shaving is like smoking a cigarette.  Quick light, gone in about 2 or 3 minutes and you get the nicotine.  That's about it.  Like cigar smoking you take it slow, get the complex flavors and the results it brings with it.

Here is a progression of about three to four months of scalp tweezing starting in late 2014 through today.  Each picture shows full regrowth after tweezing.  For example, the first picture I did a complete tweeze.  (I can go over that later when I start getting questions on the actual tweezing process I went through).  Shaved my head every day, then stopped and let it regrow out as much as it could.  Second picture, complete scalp tweeze again, shave everyday, ten stopped and let what was left regrow out as much as it could.  So on and so on for about 4 months.  It has been maintenance tweezes since early-mid 2015.  That leads to the advanced and some head waxing.

This is a final initial posting to Scalp Tweezing.  It is just regular tweezing maintenance.

Amazing results! Congrats on having the patience and fortitude to do it.  Who helped you do it? How long did it take to do a complete job at first and did you do it all in one sitting?

Good to hear from you Laser Man!  Appreciate your comments.  There is some detail in Scalp Tweezing but when I started there was not a lot of information on how to do it.  In a nutshell I did it all myself.  There are no barbers that I have been able to find who do it.  Why would they-  They would loose a customer.  My first scalp tweeze took about 4-5 days.  Did it while on vacation.  After many attempts in using the epilator like a regular razor, realized I was doing it wrong so I did some research.  I didn’t invent anything, but used the natural balding process as a guide.  The Norwood scale of baldness created for men years ago.  First I found my hair which was a Class 2.  I used that as a guide over the next few days.

(https://i.postimg.cc/7P2DFLvy/Norwood-Scale-of-MP-Baldness.png) (https://postimages.org/)

I created small bald spots and work outward on the head slowly.  First goal was creating a 2A-3A bald forehead.  Removing strips of hair at a slow pace enlarging the bald area.  At the same time I created a small bald spot on the crown to start the Class 3V-5.  Alternating to give parts of my scalp a rest.  Working myself to a Norwood 7.  Taking breaks as needed.  Basically, I used the MPB Norwood scale to keep it uniform and on track to being completely bald. That way I could go out at anytime during the process and it looked liked a natural stage of MPB until it was all gone.  I do want to say that I still shave my head.  Although my hair is 99% gone I do still maintain a modest MPB horeshoe fringe on my neck and around my ears that I can shave like all guys with extreme MPB.  That is the hair that I remove with regular monthly Scalp tweezing.  But I still can grow that fringe out. But a good head shave without hair is still refreshing, removing dead skin and keeping my bald head clean and healthy.  My head shines up much better too.

Just wanted to add, having realized I gave a lot of detail, and some men might say I want try it. I do want to advise and not so much caution guys not to scalp tweeze unless you truly want to be MP bald.  It is like getting a tattoo.  It will be permanent MPB with regular scalp tweezing.  And, a permanent skin slick bald head looks great and natural on most men but for mother nature’s reasons not as good on few others (i.e. head shape, ability to grow a full beard, skin tone etc.- Topics addressed by bald men very well on SBG).  My thought is that if you have a “different” head shape you probably have full head of hair and may look not as good as other naturally bald men.  You can reveal that by shaving your head and say nah, need to grow it back.  But I believe a lot of that is not thinking it looks good, it’s just getting used to be bald and commitment to the 30-day rule.

Final results of regular scalp tweezing will be a permanent Norwood 7 (plus) MPB once you pass that point of no return and your hair stops growing back. But, I assure you that I still enjoy shaving my head and all those bald men grooming products.

I did a lot of tweezing on myself on my path to being bald years ago.  i have continued to do some to remove other hair,  actually have little hair elsewhere from that and natural causes.

Hi mates, I finally decided to keep my entire head bald (except beard) for the rest of my life after several years shaving and then grow it back and shave it again.
I'm an Asian bald by choice guy. In spite of trying really much in the daily shave, there's always be the shadow all over my head. Besides, they grow back extremely fast and thick, just 12 hours after shave and I can feel the new hair, and it would take 24 hours to become a sand paper. Shaving also cause razor pump sometime.
So I'm thinking of tweezing and really need you help.

I tweezed my scalp for the first time around new years and I can offer some advice to anyone who might be considering tweezing. I used an Emjoi Soft Caress Epilator - 36 Gold Plated Hypoallergenic Tweezers (Rechargeable). There are a few things other people have already said here that I'll repeat. Tweezing is painful. Tweezing one hair with tweezers is a small fleeting pain and I initially found epilating to be less painful than I thought, but I found that built over time. It felt like an impact pain, like something striking my head. It wasn't unmanageable, but I had to take breaks. This brings up another point. It takes a long time. If you have a full head of hair then it will take a long time to tweeze it all. It took me four days to tweeze my entire scalp. Granted that was with taking breaks and giving my scalp time to rest, but that was a necessary part. While tweezing I found it super helpful to be able to see what I was doing; I set up a camera with a live feed on my computer so I could see the back of my head. It made that part way easier. One of my main reasons for this is it's really important that the epilator is removing your hair in the direction of its growth. This will help prevent your hair from breaking and causing ingrown hairs. That being said I still had some ingrown hairs. Otherwise the result was amazing! There was no sign of shadow for a few weeks at least. It wasn't as smooth as I thought it would be. I did still have some hairs on my scalp, which I ended up shaving (I didn't want to retweeze while I was dealing with ingrown hairs), but it made shaving way faster. I was surprised when my hair did begin growing back how little it had been damaged. I figure this may have been because I hadn't tweezed my scalp repeatedly. but it further reinforces that if you want to go bald using this method, then you'll need to be dedicated.

Very interesting. Do you feel the quality of the skin on your head was changed in any way? Any changes in texture of appearance of the skin other than no hair?  I could really dig no fringe hair for weeks!

Title: Re: Scalp Tweezing 101 - Advanced
Post by: dalboz on October 03, 2019, 11:46:09 AM
There were a couple spots where I had discoloration, but it faded over time. I didn't really notice any difference to my skin apart from the few ingrown hairs I had. When my hair started growing back some of it was blonde(I have brown hair now, but I was blonde until I was about 8 so I figure that might explain that).

To anyone considering this as a one-time or every-now-and-then alternative to shaving I would say don't. While my head looks smooth in the pictures I still had some fine hairs I had to shave. So it's not the totally smooth experience you might think it's going to be. I did look effectively bald so if it's the hair free look you want that's worth considering. However, tweezing your head is really only advisable if you want to be bald and from a lot of the research I did I realized it doesn't work for everyone.

I experienced some hair loss. As I stated previously, less than I thought I would. Some hairs grew back lighter, and finer, but ultimately I didn't have the perseverance to maintain tweezing. It's definitely something I want to try again although I'm doubtful whether I'll be able to affect any baldness.

@dalboz thanks for sharing. Will the hair softer if I keep repeating tweeze them?
Title: Re: Scalp Tweezing 101 - Advanced
Post by: dalboz on October 05, 2019, 01:36:39 AM
@Hieu Tran I don't know if your hair will grow back softer if you repeating tweeze your head. Repeating tweezing your head should cause damage to your roots which will cause less of your hair to regrow so your hair will almost certainly be thinner.

When my brother was in law school he ended up pulling his hair because of the stress and his wife said that when his hair grew back it was much softer initially.

It's hard for me to tell whether tweezing has made my hair softer. I've lost some hair so it's a little thinner, but not a ton.

What I concluded from my experience was that in order to effectively go bald I would have to maintain a tweezed scalp, Fortunately once you've eliminate the bulk of your hair tweezing is less painful. Definitely not pain free but I can understand why some guys who've tweezed for a long time don't mind it.

Before I tweezed my head I read pretty much every first hand experience I could get my hands on. There's a yahoogroup that's pretty much defunct now that had a lot of activity around tweezing. Guys stories varied from dazzling successes to abject failure. One of the things I was worried about was am I going to mess up my hair and not be able to keep tweezing. Ultimately I decided the experience of being bald was worth the risk and it worked out alright.

I tried it once and I use the method of taking strips of tape to mask off all but a half inch wide strip at a time. it was much less painful than letting the epilator take a full inch and a half wide strip all at one time.  it did give me a wonderfully smooth scalp even though it’s missing with a really tiny hairs and had a touchup with the razor.  it states clothes for almost a week before I head to epilate again. ultimately I stopped doing it because I didn’t want to do any permanent damage to my hair.  but if I we’re not BBC and had advanced hair loss I would definitely try doing it again and keeping up with it because my hair is too light to be able to laser.

I was almost full head hair, now I´m bald by choice.
Here is my progress after 6 months of tweezing and waxing maintenances.
Just the first session was so painful and I spent around 5 days to complete, now maintenance takes a much shorter time and no pain of all. I still shave the thin hair but takes around 5 minutes.

 Worth the effort.

I used an epilator on my scalp a few days ago.  I did this over a period of a couple of days.  It is painful, but nothing unbearable.  I have a feeling that it will take several sessions of this to achieve permanent results.  I used it back in the summer, but the hair started growing back after a few weeks.  I was a little more thorough with my work this time.

But I haven’t found any waxing technician who will do my head for me do you guys actually know if somebody will do it .   If so I would really like to give it a try !

Adding my name to this roster.  I’ve been a daily head shaver for the last 15 years. I’m six months into Project Epilate which I began at a Norwood 1.5 and currently, I’m at a respectable Norwood 7.  Project completion in an estimated 4 weeks. Thanks for the motivation!

I’ve used an epilator three or four times on my scalp.  After a month or two, the hair grows back.   Has anyone had permanent hair loss results from doing this?
Title: Re: Scalp Tweezing 101 - Advanced
Post by: dalboz on July 26, 2021, 08:54:14 PM
I've only epilated my head completely once, but it definitely grew back thinner and some of my hair turned white. That being said the majority of my hair grew back after about a month. I have had more success achieving permanent results with hand tweezers, but it takes a lot longer. I think this is probably because epilators break a lot of the hair shafts rather than completely removing the root.
Interesting this thread should have a rise in activity, I've been considering going for a full tweeze again.

I'm using the  Silk Epil 9 and I'm pleased with the results. Is the  an end-all, cure-all, one stop shop?? No, it's not, but it's a HUGE step in the right direction. I need to re-epilate constantly, but the new growth is a minor percentage of what existed previously. I started with the epilator 6 months ago with at least 90% of my scalp heavily carpeted.  If you were to see me now in the coffee shop, you'd consider me to have considerable MPB.

I am curious on this topic...

Do you have to let your hair grow to a certain length before using an epilator? Hand tweezing must be a huge challenge especially on the back and "out of sight" areas. My hair is rather light colored until it starts growing in, so not as much shadow until some length comes back. I'd be interested in learning more about this and embracing the bald look without the need to shave as often. Nice topic and an interesting one, for sure!

An epilator will start to work two days after a shave.  It works better after three days, but the pain level increases as well.

G_bald asks a good question; how do you tweeze the back of your head/hard to reach places? For both hand tweezing and epilating I found that having a camera set up with a live-feed on my phone was super helpful(a little overkill perhaps). You could also accomplish this with a couple of mirrors. I'd agree that three days growth is the right length. I've been thinning about my hair for the past couple weeks getting ready for a full tweeze so I'll be able to share my experience about that soon.

Bumping since I’d like to see more conversation on this, for me I started out with a mirror set up for the first few months but now I can get by just by feeling for it. Have you kept it up at all or changed up your routines in any way? I really like the shadow free look so when maintenance got easy for my scalp I started to experiment and settled on removing everything else too since I had the pain tolerance for it. It felt like I was acting on a primal urge, maybe like the Egyptians 🤷🏽‍♂️

I have used the Braun Silk Epilator.  Found it to be very painful and I wasn’t ready to go permanently bald anyway I did read an article somewhere else years ago or a guy used masking tape to mask The areas to be upbelated only about one quarter inch wide that way the entire head of the Apple and it wasn’t tearing out here it’s all the same time he said it was much easier to tolerate that way

Wow, that must hurt like hell! I don't think I would tolerate the pain well.

The thought of not having to shave every day would be great. Unfortunately, with white hair, laser is not an option. If it was possible, I would definitely think about it.

I haven’t seen this one recommended on forums before but the Phillips series 8000 has ceramic tweezers, it’s louder than some of the other ones I’ve used before but in my experience it works wonders. I have a crazy high pain tolerance myself but if you’re willing to power through it the fastest I’ve gone from a full head of hair to a completely depilated chrome dome was about 60-90 minutes!

If you only plan on doing it once or twice a year then a weeks worth of growth should be good but if you start doing it more long-term hair starts coming back more slowly over time so you could wait 2-3 weeks for more hair to grow or just epilate as new hairs come up (what I usually do)

There are some numbing creams out there!  I like the "day after" look but ripping my hair out by the roots is just too much for me to imagine.  An epilator sounds nice but isn't for me.  I look best with a very close and very smooth shave but the epilator just isn't something I'd consider.

The ultimate smooth look from tweezing sounds appealing to me, I just have not been brave enough to try it.

I love the feeling of a smooth fresh shave that only lasts about 8 hours for me, how long does tweezing feel like a fresh shave?

I don't think I would tolerate the pain. I also think I would miss the razor shaving routine. Yes, sometimes I just get tired of shaving, but most of the time I look forward to lathering up and making my head perfectly smooth. You can take pride in creating a distinctive look and wear a sharp looking haircut.

I have some thinning on the top.  The pain level there isn’t too bad.   The sides and the back of my head hurt worse.  I don’t attempt doing those areas.   I’m seriously considering going the laser route.  Aud’s Beauty Adventures has some excellent videos of the process on her YouTube channel.

Mostly just using a tweezer to thin what I have out. Starting at the crown because that's my most tricky spot to shave. It is mostly annoying vs painful.

Ever try using an epilator?

If I could find a good one I'd be open to it anything to shave easier.

Is shaving your head really that much of a chore?  I’m sure you have a lot more hair than I do, so I suppose I just can’t relate.

I have a good one and I’ll bring it along to Florida if you’d like me to try it out on you but I warn you it can be quite painful I recommend that you use the epilator and little quarter inch strips at a time rather than trying to feed the entire head at once

I've been tweezing the top of my head for the last year or so and it really makes easier shave and makes your scalp shine a lot more
