Title: Opinions Plzzzzzzz
Post by: champ007 on April 17, 2007, 09:48:54 PM
Ok, I am wondering if I should "cross over to the dome side" as I like to refer to it. I have read alot of different advice and comments, now need some enlightenment! Been tossing it around, blah blah blah, but here are my personal concerns/questions. 1- I currently have to shave every-other day on the face or I get the bumps. etc. I see alot of people shave every day on the forum, so will the hair on my head grow faster than my face?  2-Other than the Doc, I see no one with regular glasses on, <---confidence question! 3- Afraid the small sprigs I have on the top of my head may not grow back if I don't like it, hard to let whats left go. 4- My family double chin thing I can't get rid of, will I be known as "double dome"?? 5- I see alot of ppl sport goats, I have a stash but thinkin I might lose it as well, or should I go for a goat also? <--Opinions. I guess that about covers me for now, I did use a #3 trim today on the sides to try to see my head shape, will go to a 2 or even 1 this wkend. Attached a pic for you to laugh, I mean give advice from.  PS.. my son took the pic and I'm really not on any drugs, but it was the only one that included my whole head outta 20.....when you pay with peanuts..... :x!

what does your son think? what does your wife think?..i'd say your at the point in balding that going sly would be a very liberating event......your "sprigs" will grow right back along with the rest of your hair if you dont like it......the hair on your head grows the same as your face.....the double chin can be hid with a goatee...i'd definetly grow a goatee if your able too...looks good with a shaved head...also your glasses with look good with a shaved head too.....i say go for it and keep us updated! welcome to SBG's! Go for it!  The hair on your head will grow at pretty much the same rate as your facial hair, a little slower in the thinning areas.

The glasses are fine.  Try the goat to cover the chin; it usually works pretty well for those of us who need it.  At any rate, I'd get rid of the stache-only look, because it tends to age most people.  Notice that you rarely see younger guys wearing just a stache these days.  I also don't think it's the best facial hair option to go with a shaved head.

So the executive summary is:  More fuzz on the chin, less on the scalp!

If you look at my avatar I always am wearing regular glasses.   And to be frank, being bald makes them stand out more and make you look more polished/educated.

Also, based on the picture i'm seeing, you ought go for it.   Just imagine all the time saved not messing with hair and the confidence you will gain.

Champ, you look very similar to a guy I know that buzzed his head down to a #1 and it looks great on him.  Like the others have said, go for it!  Then you can play with the facial hair to get the best look for YOU.

Welcome to Sly Bald Guys!

I too have always worn glasses, and will soon get new ones that will try to empathize the sly look. You have the right shaped head for shaving. And like Tyler said, you can always play around with facial hair to see what works best on you; but a goatee should work well.

I guess I am here to echo what others have said: I sometimes wear glasses and I love the way it looks with my bald dome. I would also suggest a goatee, they look great with a sly head and will help cover up your double chin, which I wouldn't worry about anyways, because people are going to be looking at your head, not your chin! Best of luck, hope to see you around the forum more!

hard to let whats left go.

I think you hit the nail on the proverbial head there Champ. A lot of guys find it hard to let go, because they are looking at it "bass ackwards" in my opinion. You ARE going bald... understand that as a fact, fearing it and fighting it cannot change the fact that you are losing your hair. What you CAN change (or control at least) is how you choose to handle this inevitability.

The act of "balding" slowly, over a course of years is an act of clinging to something that is fading away naturally (emphasis on naturally). It projects an image of someone who is "making the best of whats there" so to speak. Someone who is "settling". Someone resisting change. Someone who is trying (desperately in some cases) to fit in with the rest of a society that places value on hair (which seems kinda silly when you say it out loud).

So rather than fight to cover and hold on to what is slipping away no matter what you do. Why not embrace the change? make a statement of it. "Choose" to go SLY before mama nature takes your toys away anyway. Why not make it YOUR choice to head things off at the pass so to speak?

I see shaving my head as a freeing act. I am free from forced conformity, and the low level narcissism of "how does my hair look?". Free from the idea that masculinity is tied to hair growth (that whole Samson story really messed guys up). Free from the troubles and worries of styling (and all the products that go along with it.) And in my case, free from the trouble and embarrassment that comes from Psoriasis and dandruff.

I know have a uniform, low maintenance, consistent, reliable look that I enjoy a great deal. I never have bad hair days, bad hair cuts, or silly hair styles in pictures. I look clean, hygienic, individual and confident (partially because I am never concerned with my hair).

Here are the big questions (in my mind at least):

1. Are YOU happy with the way you look now?

2. What do YOU think your current look says about you?

3. What do YOU want your look to say about you?

All else is crap as far as I am concerned. Those who admire, respect and love you will continue to do so you, regardless of what is (or isn't) on top of your head. Hell, they might admire respect and love you even more for taking control of your situation and making a bold choice.

As far as glasses go... I think they look fine (at least I hope they do  ;) ), and most of the ladies that I've dated have thought so too (yes... some women find even ME attractive). There are some threads on the forum about prescription glasses and the SLY guy (http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=380.0) you may want to check out as well. I'd say try the goatee out for a bit... It helps me out with the whole chins thing that is creeping up on me (though I guess more gym and less fast food would help a bit too O0 ), and you can always take it back off again if you don't like it.

In any event, I'd echo the rest of these egg heads in saying "take the plunge!", cause I mean really... what have you got to loose (that you aren't already)?

Just my humble opinion.

Welcome Champ, I can't add much more than what Vash and the other guys have already said.  Just go for it.

I too get a lot of bumps and irritation on my face and neck no matter which way I shave that, therefore I do that every other day.  However, my scalp is totally different.  I have absolutely no problems with that stuff there and shave it everyday.  Go figure?  I'd say you'll have to experiment with that.  Everybody is different.  I will say that since I started  shaving my dome, I've had little to no problems with scalp acne like I had with hair, so it has been a huge bonus for me.  Looking forward to hearing how this all plays out for you.  Again, welcome.

Cheers!

Welcome Champ. Glad you found us. Not much to add after the others have said it all so well, except to vote for going with the goat.  It makes a great addition to the sly look and glasses.

Thanks for all the input guys, I am almost positive I am headed to Sly. Gonna hit the #1 trim this weekend and make the final decision. Oh, and I forgot to mention I have been wifeless for 10 years now...that was a very liberating event ;D and my son is 14, so he just wants to shave my head, said it doesn't matter cause I'm old anyway!! I do alot of singing (Rock and Roll) so he told me to get temp tats like a big star or something to hit the stage with.....Kids. I have asked some of my female um.... acquaintances and have had mixed reactions, but I do not think I will end up in a desert :*))  I will update my pic as the events unfold.  Oh, and one more question, I don't think I want to gleam, live in the south and the sun could be a blinding experience, is the matte stuff good to cut some of the shine off?? Plus can it blend with sunscreen...will need to apply daily here.  Thanks again guys...

Hey Champ, you can buy a lotion called Matte for Men that has a matte finish and an SPF of 25.  You can also use HeadLube Matte and add sunscreen on top, but the sunscreen may add a little extra shine.

Of course I say go for it...

the glasses aren't a problem at all with a shaved head...usually looks good.....

don't lose the stash, grow the bottom into a goat (at least for now during the transition)..you don't want to scar yourself off of the look, by going the 'full monty", Mr. Clean route (at first)..especially if you're concerned with the double chin...you may feel TOO bald and doughy...trust me on that..... especially at first!

Good luck and let us know how it goes on your journey to SLY!

Welcome Champ,
Have been shaving 5 days now and will never go back. So far have overwhelmingly positive reactions to the new look.
If you want to get an idea of how it will look....check out www.baldlygo.com. You submit a picture and you will get a "virtual head shave" so you can get an idea of how you will look. They will even add a goat.

Good luck with your decision.

Welcome to SBG Champ!!! I agree with your approach, go down to the 1 first, see how you and the family like it. After you do go SLY, give yourself at least 30 days to adjust.

I use HeadLube Matte and HeadShade (SPF 15) to finish. It gives a good solid protection and significantly cuts down on the glare factor.

Best of luck.

Update!! After my workout this morning my son advised me that he needed a ride to school, so as I was putting on my hat to cover my sprigs that were pasted to my head from sweat, I said to myself "self, if I was Sly I could just head out the door". So as soon as I returned to take a quick shower to head to work--BAM--clipper number 2 attacked my head!! So tomorrow its clipper number 1 and Friday its go time. After work I made my way to CVS and picked up the HeadSlick and Headblade, which were the only 2 in the store and redtagged as New Item (Down South we are just a few months/years behind... Mama always said..) but no HeadLube, so I will check Walmart for some type of finish. I figure the weekend I can get some sun working in the yard and by Sunday I should have a shadow of a goat>.. BAAAAAAA! Thanks guys for all your advice and encouragement. I'm psyched!  PS.... I also submitted my encouragement song I trim with, from 1975, Rush- I think I'm going Bald! Hope it can make the Jukebox cut!!
Welcome to SBG Champ....Where are you from?  (sorry if I missed it...I just got from the south)

Update again! I made it to phase 3. I gotta tell ya that I rode with my windows down after the buzz and boy are the dates I go on going to get pissed!!! What AC???? Tomorrow is shave day, no stopping now!!
I gotta share a part of my experience for you all to enjoy. At my job I work mainly with women (I'm IT) and I have been wearing a hat through my transition, but only at work and this is highly irregular. So I have been questioned many times why the hat, and also been asked to lift my hat. My response has been no and its a personal reason I am wearing a hat. Today I had 3 women try to corner me to remove my hat, which I really didn't care but it has been killin all the women to see whats under it so it has turned into a game for me  :) Close to the end of the day one of the women approached me in the middle of the room and said let me see whats under your hat it can't be that bad, the whole floor was quiet and tops of heads appeared at the top of the cubicle walls, so I put on a real serious face and said "I told everyone here it was personal and all ya'll can do is try to pull my hat off and even try to wrestle me down, it ridiculas! How would you feel if you had big breasts and I pulled your shirt off to look at them?"  The response, "thats not the same" and of course I just stared with a serious look and said "for a man and his hair, isn't it?"  Hat still not removed at work! After my shave tomorrow I will be purchasing my SLY t-shirt and gettin some sun this weekend. I will update my pic with my slyness the begining of next week when the goat is more visible!  Once again thanks for all the advice and welcomed feeling, don't think I would be as confident without the great input and answers.

Update!!! I have updated my sly pic from today. It was quite an experience friday for my first shave, the noise kinda freaked me out not knowing if I was shaving hair or scalp, but seeing clear water flow let me know I was not bleeding to death. I did not do a great job, and the numbness was different, so I decided to shave saturday to try to get smooth. I did alot better but still had some spots that I missed. Today was the actual confidence shave and boy is it smooth, smooth is awesome! I think I will be shaving everyday for a couple of weeks then see how quick it grows after that. I gotta say I feel 10 years younger, and so far reactions have been very positive. This week at work and next weekend when I hit some watering holes will be a good test. My kid keeps putting his hand on my head, so much its starting to piss me off :Xo!  LOL. I fixed my myspace page which I haven't used in forever and added more pics, so my link works now if you want to check some more pics. I think I understand the feeling of SLY now! 8)

You had the total nerd package goin' on there before. Is this the same champ007?  You should be the posterboy for the slybaldguys. You look 15 years younger! Truly "amazing" what a simple headshave can do for one's appearance.

I did see the power of the transformation, so trying to help others I put it together and have the confidence to post it! Thanks for the nomination of the King though  ;D I agree with ya!
Champ, I'm with all the others and the transformation looks great.  Can you tell us about your first day back at the office and the unveiling?  I'm especially interested since I have not yet gone totally SLY.
Not yet Sly, yesterday was actually amazing. I got to work a few minutes early and crept into my office and shut the door, started my PC and made sure my Servers weren't smokin, then grabbed my coffee cup and headed to the first floor. My first response was Wow, I didn't know who you were at first, then got- looks good and then a head rub and I headed to the coffee pot. As I was pouring my coffee I heard, hey Stone Cold, come here when ya finish. Another headrub and I pretended to scratch my leg like a dog and pant  >:D  I did not get any negative remarks from the Lay-Days, all were good. Some were, you look totally different but I'll get use to it. Most of the guys were, you really did it!! but who cares about the guys... right! Of course I told them the next step is a Harley and a Fat Chick!  ::)
This weekend they have a parade and stuff in the city so I should see alot of people I haven't seen in a while. Will update some reponses from people I do not see everyday. Its probably the best thing I have done for my appearance in the last 15 years, since I am a coaster finatic I decided to take the ride and see how many G's I could handle, so far my hands are still up in the air and the adrenaline is kicken!! O0

If anyone just reading this post is curious about the before and after, I am attaching the transformation pic.

Man that's amazing. You look at least 10 years younger!  You should be on "going sly" posters!

Champ, that photo makes you look a bit more intimidating.  Are you getting any reactions to that yet?

No offence dude but you looked like a creepy science teacher in the first pic(with hair), now you look like a sly guy, it does suit you.  O0

You look like your about 5-10 years younger with the shaved head(hard to pin exactly as your wearing shades)
Do you think I should update the transformation pic with me wearing my regular glasses in front of one of the walls I took the other pics at??

Champ,

I agree with the others.  It looks like you not only shaved your head, but shaved off 10-15 years.  Wow, what a difference.  Looks like you ready to kick a$$ and take names.

You're right about that.  It's a very hard institution to be accepted into.  Now all you need is  for the great Schro to make you one of his legendary Schrotini's to anoint you with.  Ok, I have no clue where all that just came from.   :/O :D :/O

Hey Champ. Yes, I'd like to see the updated pic with your regular look.  I'm sure it will be great also.  Although I don't think anything can beat the look with shades on.

Alright Not yet Sly, here ya go. I would like to add that I also have to maintain a professional apperance at work, there is even a stated "dress code" for all office employees. The president of our company was out and saw me for the first time today, after the cueball and baldy comment, he said I look more professional. I had this pic taken just now when I walked in from work. I blurred the emblem, don't want everyone in the world knowing where I work. I am glad you have made it off the fence and decided. I am sure you will recieve similar positive comments from co-workers and family/friends. Also embrace that numbness and feeling you get after your first shave. The numbness fades but the confidence is still kickin!!!!
I modified the first transformed with the new pic. Just to see how it looked compared to the other.

Thanks SoonToBeSly, I am looking forward to your sly look. I am really happy that I went through the experience with everyone here. And proud (but sometimes embarrassed) that my transformation is helping to inspire people "on the fence".

Nothing to be embarrassed about Champ.  You should be proud.  It was definitely the right decision.

Hi Champ,
I appreciate that you have shared your "process" with the group. You have gone from "thinking about it" to a spokesman for the sly in a short period of time. I can certainly relate to the steps you have shared.  Thanks, and be proud ( certainly not embarrassed)
