Ward's Reviews - Headblade Headlube Glossy and Matte

The two Headblade post-shave balms. Many people seem to rave about them, others don't care for them. Here is my take.

Scent: No scent to this PSB. I actually found this opportunistic, where I was able to combine a cologne without worry of conflicting scents.

Burn: Ouch! Yea, there is a burn to this PSB. I was thrown off guard by this, as I didn't expect a burn with a cream. The burn hits you about 10 seconds after application and lasts up to 5 minutes. The Matte burned more than the Glossy. 

Moisturizing: Fantastic. The consistency of this PSB is that of a heavy skin cream.

Absorption: Stinks, period. After applying it to my head I really had to massage the hell out of it and wait a few minutes till it was absorbed. This PSB leaves white residue if over-applied. Also, a couple hours after applying, my head would feel and look very greasy. Definatly not sly! 

Cooling: No cooling effect. A big negative for me.

Soothing: After the initial bad burn , I really didn't feel this PSB aided in any post-shave damage.

Healing: Decent. Like I said, it's more like applying a skin cream rather than a PSB.

Price: For around $9, you get an 8oz tube. I'd say it's a good deal as you don't need much cream per use.

Would I buy again?: Negative. I have 2 bottles of the Matte and 1 bottle of the Glossy that I found on sale at Sally's. Needless to say, I've been slowly using these as skin cream, rather than on my head. I really like a handful of Headblade products, but Headlube is just a miss for me.

I have to agree with this review.  I am a headblade user, but dont care for the glossy or matte headlube

Wow, what are you doing during your shave?  I've never experienced a burn when using either of these products.

Also, I'll agree if you're throwing the cream on when your head is still wet then it won't absorb very well, but neither will any cream.  Try waiting just a couple of minutes and you should see much better absorbency.

I use different combinations of pre-shave, shave and post-shave products. I have read other accounts of other people who've experienced a burning sensation using Headlube. I've even tried Headlube on my face and experienced bad burn. Even though Headlube is suppose to be free of dyes and irritants, there might be a group of users who's skin just doesn't cooperate with it.

It could be that some guys get a burn when using this.  I guess I just don't remember reading any posts regarding burn from HeadLube. 

Though, that's why we always say that everyone will find a routine that works best for them.  For me, HeadLube Matte is usually in the routine.

But it doesn't last too long.

Nearly none with matte.
Most products give me some amount of burn.

But I am currently not using either product any more.

Trying to get this as simple (few products) as possible.
I am going to have a  LOT of extra product on hand by the time my "trials" are done.

I initially read some reports of Headlube 'burning' on this thread: http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=8633.0

However, Headlube is favored by many SBG; so like Tyler said, everyone needs trial and error to see what works best for them.

I'm a big fan of the HeadBlade and HeadSlick but DO NOT like the HEadLube..... It's just way too greasy for me.

I do have to say that I am with Tyler on this one. I have been using Head Blade Glossy for a long time now and have never experienced the burn. As mentioned, I think it proves that we all respond differently to shaving products.

Perhaps some of the difference is that post shave I trim my goat and then I put on the Headlube. I don't know, I just know I really like the stuff.

I mean, it's another great Ward Review. Man you should be a product tester somewhere. Thanks for the info and  I'll be looking forward to another one. I appreciate the time you must put into writing some of these!

i have to say that I've been usuing the HeadLube Glossy and have never felt a sting or burn. I usually put it on after my heads dried, and then after rubbing it in I wet my hands and go over it lightly to take the white out of it and add to the gloss.  I let it air dry like this (only a few minutes..i don't over wet my hands) and it helps add to the shine and also thins it a bit. that might help you guys that feel this is a bit too "greasy"   I'm waiting for the Matte to arrive that I've ordered since I can not find that in any store in the area...so I havn't had any experience with that yet

For me the sting is only with the matte and it doesn't last long.

Many products give me some amount of sting but that effect seems to not be of any merit.
No lasting or other irritations caused with/by it.

i use the matte. seems to work for me. no burn, not greasy, no prob as for now.

I'm surprised to see sting or burn mentioned with HeadLube.  Having sensitive skin, I've never had it with either the Matte or Glossy.  Now the ClearHead, THAT will burn and sting, but definitely helps when you first start shaving the dome and have break outs.

As to the absorption, the Glossy takes a bit more work than the Matte for it to absorb. Though with both a little bit goes a long way on the dome.  After putting a small amount on my hands, rubbing them together and then rubbing it on the dome, have the lotion effect with seeing it all over, I usually just give it another smoothing out to be sure everywhere is covered, and then just a couple of slides down the head with the hair grain and it all disappears.
