That's hilarious!  My neighbors don't even know that I have a wireless network, but I know that they have one.  I don't broadcast my SSID for that reason.

Hey TY, you should broadcast as freenet or something and encrypt it. I boosted my signal so it could reach 5 houses down just so noobs can try to connect..... some secret pleasures of mine.  ::)

Speaking of wireless networks, gotta share this with you.
My router finally gave out. I should have known something was up....I was using an 11.b model. Apparently it was on borrowed time for quite a while. I think I bought it back in the fall of 2001.  :o After doing some trial & error troubleshooting, I figured it was time to put it to pasture. I went to Best Buy & told the guy when I bought it and he said they typically last about 2 years...guess I was lucky. Like a toaster, coffee maker, grass trimmer, or any other piece of equipment, routers have a finite life.

Just installed an 11.G.....back in the internet saddle.  O0 Sly, smooth and fast. It's all good.  8)

Yeah, well we have some pretty crafty people here in the Bay Area so I try not to tempt them too much.  I would have even added Mac Address filtering, but it was screwing up my TiVo connection.

I will say that even I know how to hack an encrypted network with the right tools, so I know there has to be a couple high school kids around here that could probably do it while they read their dad's Cisco manual.

No man I am still stuck behind a old PC. I am looking to get a nice Laptop with wireless for sure. I allow myself 1 big purchase per year. And this year it is either a new HD TV or a sweet MAC Laptop.

  A mac is a great idea! We've got 3 powerbooks and a g5 laptop

I run a Dynalink 1025W ADSL Modem/4 port Wireless router. The wireless LAN is a 128bit WEP encryption.

I can usually pick up around 5-10 other wireless networks in my area. Like champ, I have considered buying a Booster to broaden the range I can get from it, but really no need. My ADSL speed runs at 1500mb p/s down and 256kb p/s up. Wired LAN is much quicker than Wireless but only minimally.

BTW, I was wondering. What are some of the speeds that ADSL or Cable High Speed run at in North America? In Australia, the fastest speed one can get is ADSL2+ which runs a maximum of 27mb p/s

I've been wireless for the most part for about 2 years, in my travels most places just have wireless so thats what I'm stuck with. I like the lan lines they don't seem to have the drop off that you get with wireless.
