Putting my dog to sleep

I'm sorry to hear about the end of your dog's life. I know first hand the unconditional love we can have for a pet and how sad it can be when they're gone.

My heart goes out to you Michael. I was there two years ago when Gizmo developed cancer for the third time. The first two times we were able to beat it, but not the third. Big hugs, my friend.

I just want to add my own expression of condolence to what has already been said.  It really hurts to say good-bye to a beloved pet even though you know it has to be done.  It's the right thing, but so painful.

Sorry to hear about your dog.  I can still remember how difficult it was when we put our dog down when I was a kid.

I'm really sorry to hear about this.  I know the feeling it was the hardest thing I ever had to do.  My dog was a Sheltie and was 19 he had perfect health his entire life.  Mine went into seizure and never came out of it.  I'm not afraid to say i cried 3 straight days with no sleep.  So I wish you all the best.

I'm sorry.  It's the right thing to do, but that doesn't make it any easier.  

Agreed... haven't had to put a dog down yet.  We had to give a dog away once, and now have had Zack for 5 years.  I do know how hard it is though, because I had to put down our cat of 15 years.  Cats are stand-off-ish, and that was extremely hard, so dogs would be even harder because they're just like little kids.  Stay strong buddy!

Its tough when you have lost/losing a pet.  Trust me I know.  We are still dealing wiht our duck loss.  Time will heal.  Prayers for you and the family.

As a dog owner and lover this post really hits home. It really hurts me to hear this Tom.
It's never easy to put a pet to sleep. You can definitely feel good knowing that she will not have to endure
any type of pain if any that she may already be feeling.
13 years of great memories should in a way ease the pain for your loss.

I know exactly how you feel mate, we had to put our labrador down who was the beloved family pet for 11 years...he was such an amazing animal but he developed lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes) and he was just in so much pain and not acting like himself.  I couldnt even bear to go with my mum to put him to sleep, i just had to kiss him goodbye and lock myself in my room...its all part of life though i guess

My thoughts and prayers are also with you for the loss of your dog.  When my Cocker,  Freeway had to be put down, I cried like a baby.  I had this dog for seventeen years.  A loyal member of the family.

Hey Brothers, the thoughts and prayers have been wonderfully reassuring.  Thanks!  Last Thursday I recieved a call from my wife.  Georgette was in distress.  Her breathing was labored and her legs were swelling up (I am guessing her kidneys were shutting down.)  I left my students with a sub, picked up my kids and met my wife at home.  Georgette waddled over to me, tail-nubb wagging. She was, after all, my dog. Even to the very end she needed to greet her master.  We took her to our vet in Lockeford, CA. It was soooo time to let her go.  I held her in my arms when the vet gave her one of two shots.  The first was a tranquilizer.  Holding her in my arms, head cradled, she looked at me the whole time.  As she started to become drowsy, she smiled (I know some say dogs don't smile... but any dog lover will tell you that they do!) , she took a deep breath and sighed.  And that was it.  Even though the vet said her heart was still very faint, I knew her spirit had left.  I wrapped her in my favorite blanket (I've been treasuring my "gee gee" for over 25 years!) and we buried her on my parents land.  The house is so much more empty without her.
