I have only known one real control freak and like many others it was my mother. She tried to control everything that I did. I think she did it because she messed up on my two older brothers so she wanted me to turn out better. I delt with her by moving out.

WELL HELLO ? I like DMAN had one give birth to me and unfortunatly at my age 49 im still allowing it to happen !but momz 86, i have no brothers/sisters my dads passed 25 years ago (i think he secretly commited sucicide somehow to get away)

A study was done regarding the very real statistic of men dying 7 years earlier than their wives and the answer that the researchers came up with for why this happens was.....
BECAUSE THEY WANT TO!!!!!

IMO, and I could certainly be wrong, control freaks become the way they are as adults out of necessity because their lives as children, or drastic parts of their childhoods, were totally out of control to the point where they experienced strong emotions most of the time, mostly negative. I don't think people make a conscious decision to be control freaks as adults, they strive to have order in their lives but the fear never goes away and, as a result, they attempt to gain order by whatever means they deem necessary. Most of the time it involves controlling the actions of those closest to them because, as children, it was those closest to them who violated their trust.

My cousin (like a sister) fits this catagory!!!!!  I used to tolerate her insistant control.  I have told her repeatedly that I am 63 Y/O and have made it this far without her help.  Now when she starts, I simply say "Back off".  It usually works.
I am no better that anyone else, but by God, no one is better than I am
