Fencers and Lurkers--Is SLY professional???
« on: December 31, 2008, 08:12:34 AM »
Yesterday I finished my CLE, i.e. continuing legal education.  In Louisiana we have to do 12.5 hours a year.  So as usual I was forced into doing it at the last minute.  I took the course from the local bar, and it was interesting to see that of the 100 to 150 lawyers present at each session, at least 5 and as many as 8 were sly.
My point for the fencers and lurkers who are worried if the sly style is considered acceptable in professional life.  Clearly if in excess of 4% of the attendees were sly and there were between 40 and 60% women in attendance at each session, sly is approaching 10% of male lawyers O0.  That is acceptance by any interpretation of the term.  So put aside any worries about whether it is acceptable in professional life.  It is part of the general scene now.  The only downside is that we have to share the available head rubbing ladies w/ more guys.

The same is true in the medical community.  I give lectures across the world and find the sly style increasingly popular at every "continuing medical education" seminar I speak at.  In the world of boxing and mixed martial arts the percentage is approaching 20%. I fit in where ever I go.

That's Miss Irma, our dobie.  I'm giving her a little time to shine.  Unfortunately, this week I felt a little pea sized lump in her neck that appeared literally overnight.  The tests say it's a sarcoma, and it comes out tomorrow.  Hopefully they'll get it all, she's not even five yet.

There are at least three of us on this site who are CPAs -- and I know of a fourth who recently took the exam.  I don't think any profession has a reputation for stodginess like the accounting profession does.  Yet there are several of us here to attest that being sly has not been a problem in the least.

Thanks for the thoughts on Miss Irma.

When you go to meetings w/ CPA's have you ever noticed what percentage of the males attendees are sly?  So far it looks like it works for lawyers, doctors and CPA's (some aren't so stodgy at all or there wouldn't have been an Enron  >:D), the acceptance is wonderful, except for one thing--I always kind of liked the edgyiness of the "style" and that is taking a beating w/ the growing acceptance.  What other professions do we have here and what is the percentage at your meetings?

To be honest, not many.  I attended one seminar in December -- it was a small group of about 12 people.  There was one other sly guy there -- he was probably 50-something.  He's the first one I ever remember seeing at one of these seminars.  Not that I see a lot of combovers or anything.  Just most of the attendees just haven't been bald.  But aside from those classes, the suit-and-tie types that I tend to come across are virtually all sly if they have MPB.

Saint -- Miss Irma is gorgeous.  Surely the pea-sized sarcoma will be successfully removed en toto.  Wishing her (and you) the best.

Same thing in the Pest Control business. Lots of SLY PPCO's (Professional Pest Control Operators)
Our country demands all our strength, all our energies. To resist the powerful combination now forming against us will require every man at his place. If victorious we will have everything to hope for in the future. If defeated, nothing will be left for us to live for.

Miss Irma is in recovery.  Ned, the vet, said that it was small, and appeared to be entirely encapsulated and contained solely within the dermal tissue and hadn't invaded the muscles of the neck.  The lab will check the margins of the tissue removed to be sure that there weren't any microscopic extensions.  She'll be at the vets under watch until Monday because she has issues w/ stitches--he used stainless this time to help avoid that problem.  In the past when spayed, she worked around the collar, actually got it off, and ate bandages and that was another issue.  When  she comes home she'll be sedated so that her desire to "get at the wound" will be lessened.  Miss Irma has attitude!
We were lucky, Saturday night I didn't feel a thing, Sunday afternoon the growth was there about the size of a pea.  The vet said that we found it very early and that greatly increases the possibility of a complete removal.
