The Shield- season one question

In the past I have heard several members of this forum discuss The Shield and Chiklis.  Therefor, this past week I purchased The Shield season one.  I couldn't help but notice that Chiklis is not shaved bald.  Looks like he is using maybe a #1 or #0 guard.  Question, does anyone know at what point in the show Chiklis began to shave his head?  He looks ok with the very short buzz cut, but looked much better after he completely shaved his head.

He's shaved in the last couple of seasons, but only buzzed in the earlier years.  They even have a shot of him getting his head buzzed before a shoot in one of the extras on one of the DVDs.  I don't know why because he's always been razor-shaved in real life.  He was even plugging the Headblade in interviews around the time that The Shield first went on the air.
