For after shave, something old school barbershop...either a splash of Pinaud Clubman or good quality Bay Rum (ordered online or from Orvis).
For cologne: not so much a fan of colognes. -

Aftershave, Musgo Real Splash or Dr Harris Pink
Colognes, errm Code Black I like, Amouge Dia and CoolWater's good. -

I don't use traditional aftershaves as they make me break out but I do use Nivea balm.
My wife loves Polo, Polo Sport and Aspen colognes on me though. -

Most of the various brands will mail you free samples. You can also go to a department store and get samples there. -
