A question for all of the Sly Moms and Dads.

What is the maximum age of your children, when it is time for them to go out into the world and start their own adult lives?

Personally, I know 2 "kids" who have never worked a day in their lives.  Mommy and Daddy STILL cater to their every whim.  One is 48, and the other is 54.

I think this is a classic case of "Parenting Gone Wild!"

My oldest son is 23 years old (from my first marriage but he lived with me and my wife from age 12 to 18) and one month after graduating high school, at the age of 18, he moved out on his own. He's had some tough times for a couple years but was determined to succeed on his own. Great young man.

I was out of my parents house at 21. I figure my kids, currently 6 and 11, will probably go in their early twenties.

48 and 54 is crazy..... not their faults but the PARENTS fault. Around the time your kids are 40 or so it's time to look them in the eyes and say, "Son, i think it's time you move out on your own".

I would say unless they have special needs at the latest by age 25 they should physically be on their own. By age 30 they should be emotionally and financially stable as well.

48 and 54? That's just sad.

I boomeranged between apartment stops after college, but was permanently on my own at 24.
That seemed like an acceptable age.

At 48 and 54, their parents are doing them no favors supporting them.  If they don't work, they are building no retirement funds, and they won't even qualify for social security.  Unless mommy and daddy are independently wealthy and they inherit the family fortune, their "golden years" are going to be a real struggle.

BUT, I really can't talk much because I moved back to my parents' house at the tender age of 55... I guess the difference is that I had a job.

Since we are on the subject - I am currently living on my own (23 yrs old), but I am planning on moving back to my parents for the next 10 months before I get married to save up some money and/or somewhat of a nest egg.  I will still be employed, and although it initially sounded like a wise decision to make, I am really not looking forward to it.  My parents are surprisingly not opposed (atleast from what they say), but I'm fearful of falling into the traps of living at home - spending money on luxories, family drama, invading my parents's space.  But one of the biggest downsides of moving from my current place is that its 5 minutes from work, while my parent's place is a 30-45 min drive depending on traffic (not too bad).
Didn't mean to hijack, maybe I'll get tips from you guys in another thread, but that's my relation to your question, BW

I thought I might be the only one...

not me....but I have a sister who is 44 and has never worked a day in her life for the same reason....never had a job interview....NOTHIN'....great big elephant in the living room....the emperor is definitely NAKED....(and all that).

Never gave much thought to MAXIMUM homebound age...I moved out at 20.

Unless a kid is in college I would say 25 THE LATEST.
And it needs to be made clear to them from age 18 on if they are not going to school
they need to support themselves on their own and have their own place by 25.

I moved out of my parents house on June 6th 1980, 2 days after high school graduation.  When I say I moved out, I moved out. that meant out of the house, out of the county, outof the state, in fact I moved from Northern Minnesota, to Grand Junction Colorado....with a car, my crap, and 900 dollars in my pocket.....

I had one move out right after high school and the other one right after college.....as for myself....I moved out of my parents home at 14 ....my grandmother had died and I moved in with my grandfather and stayed there all through high school until I entered the military at 19...

I moved out at 19.  Went to Atlanta to x-ray school.  My parents did pay my way through school and I lived in the dorm.  I got married one month after I graduated.

After I got married I was cut off financially from my parents and I thought that was a fair deal since they paid tuition, room and sent me $100 a week for food and gas while I was in school for two years.

My brother left home at 23.

Now that's what I'm talking about! I moved out of my folks home 2 weeks after I turned 19 and I moved from mid-Michigan all the way to Texas. I've been back home only twice since then (I'm 46 now).

I moved out when I was 20.  I met my wife a few months before I had moved out and a short time later she moved in with me and we were married 8 months later.  I did move back into my parents house for a brief period and that was  anight mare within its self.  We had sold our house and we couldnt get into our new house for 30 days( somethign got all messed up) anyways..all of our stuff went into storage and plus we had Chelsea at this time and she was just a year old.  I love my parents...but never ever let me stay with them again.

I moved out when I was 19.
Had a crap job and lived in a dump, but my parents had made it clear to me moving out would be the best thing for me. So I did.
Worked out for the best.
Before moving out my life’s ambition was to work at a Block Buster so I'd get free movies.
I wound up busting my ass for a few years as an electrician and after years of hard work and lucky breaks now I got a cushy, high paying, work from home job.
