so here i was walking down the street, and some ignorant gives me the "white power" salute or whatever it is, and actually yells "white power!" at me. i was crushed. i do go to school here in a small town, there are alot of really sheltered people who have never been exposed to any other race than white, and don't have ANY tolerance for anything that isn't camouflage, hunting boots and a "get 'er done" baseball cap. i think i'd be alot more accepted and nto get as many stares if i lived in a hip city. i can't wait until i graduate from college. do people really see us this way?
oh and just so noone is offended by my "camo" remark, i do hunt, fish, and i drive a truck. i grew up in a smal town as well. so i grew up as sort of a red neck, but i'm alot more accepting than thsee people are!

I have never been "saluted" that way. I would be offended and angry.
I don't feel the vast majority of the public perceives us that way. Sounds like you ran into an ignorant, shallow hatemonger.
I live in a small town too, btw.

I've had only one reference made to me in the past...the guy felt dumb when my Filipina wife came out of the store and grabbed my hand.

I think this kind of thing is more prevelant out in the west like Montana and Idaho. A lot of seperatist groups are out there hiding out in the hills.

Y'know... I can't remember ever getting the "white power" salute thingy - which is probably a good thing, as I probably would've suggested they do something anatomically impossible.
What I did get was the flip side - When I'd arrest somebody (12 years in the private security field) I'd get "You're only arresting me because I'm (insert race here.) my pat comeback was "No, I'm arresting you 'cause you're a dip....stick."
Racism is hatred - plain and simple - and the world doesn't need any more hatred.

No, never get any salutes or anything like that. I think some of it may be because of locale but most of it because of ignornace....

No salutes here either..... I can't stand racism of any kind. People are people and I judge each one individually. You're either a good person or a loser.
I grew up in the city where I was often the only white kid in the baseball or basketball game. I've personally felt that sting of racism and it sucks.

I grew up in rural NC where there were a number of KKK types. Man, when you grow up around those types of people it takes alot of work to root that out of your thinking. I still catch myself having judgemental thoughts..case in point the democratic presidential nominee.. but now I am aware when it happens and can ask myself objectively what about that person makes me think that way. Being aware of any prejuidice in one's self is step number one to getting rid of it.
