New here..looking for advice
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:34:56 AM »
Hi guys ! Been lurking for a bit ...first time poster here.  Seems like a great group of guys here.
Heres my story...
Always had long hair..loved it in my teen years. Began losing hair when I was 19 or so...by 22 I went the hairpiece route for like 7 years.  Liked it for awhile and then just decided to shave it down to a 2. At that time (about 12-14 years ago) bald was definitely not in for a paleish white guy in his 20's like me.  I heard a lot of bald jokes but rolled with them the best I could.
I had a lot more hair then I do now and now I am at a crossroads. Despite minoxidil/finasteride my hair had become almost non existent in the front which give me the wonderful high forehead look that EVERYONE covets :)
So I have toyed with the idea of shaving it off. I feel a level 0 or one would look best on me(a shadow) but I have a problem.  I have 2 spots on my head that are high up on the side that hair doesnt grow.(about 1 inch by 1/2 inch)..and I know this wont look right with the shadow I envision. Are there any products that can simulate a shadow/stubble look  ? I dont envision this as a permanent solution but I think it will help me to getting closer to sly.
Thanks for any replies !

OK ...well...I dont think you are going to find an answer to that question....at least one that you want to hear.  But what you do need to hear is ...man go for it.  Shave it all off.  You will be amazed at how natural it will be for you and the concerns of people making fun of you will almost be nonexistant.   If you would...you need to post a pic up of yourself, not that it will matter any...because Im sure you will look fine with a slick noggin.   I know it is easier for all of us to sit here and say...just do it, because we all have been shaving for a year or more.  I can remember back when I first did it.  I actually didnt want to come out of the bathroom.  Took me about 5 minutes of looking at myself in the mirror and just decided well I cant live in the bathroom my whole life....so I walked down stairs.  Sure the jaws dropped but what made it even better was, it was a friday night and we were on our way out to eat at a well known eating establishment where everyone you know will be there.  Surprisingly I didnt get too many bad comments...actually I got my first head rub taht night from someone other than my wife and kids.
You will feel awesome after a few days, WE PROMISE...right guys?  Shave it...do the 30 day test run and see if you like it...if not ..grow it back.  Just keep us posted and welcome to the site

I don't know of any products that would simulate a shadow.  Why don't you go ahead and shave?  I have the same kind of spots on my head and I used to buzz down to a 1 or 0.  Those bald spots didn't look so good, so I either had to grow my hair longer (which I hated) or go slick.  Now that I'm smooth, those spots aren't noticeable.  Just go for it, man.  I'm pretty sure you'll be glad you did.  If you absolutely hate the look, you'll have the shadow back in no-time.  Welcome to the site!

Hey DJ, welcome to the SBG. Like the others, I know of no product that does what you're looking for. I will tell you that what you will find here is great support. Most of us have been where you are right now so we can relate. IMHO go ahead and shave it off. Try it out for 30 days. Believe me it will be one of the most liberating things you've ever done regardless of whether you stay SLY or not. There is just something about shaving you head slick.

So, again welcome and keep us posted. O0
Tis better to have a bald head than no head at all.

If you were a long haired guy back in the day, from dudes I've know that were long haired also...

a razored shiny bald head will give you back the "edge" that long hair gave you...

trust me, I've seen it!

Go smooth brutha..you'll love it! O0

Go smooth and then wait five days and you will have a perfect shadow.  You  might even get the shadow that you are looking for quicker than that.

the thing with having a bit of hair left is that you are BALD, the thing about being SLY is that you are SHAVED: it's your choice: you have controlled that baldness.  It's no longer something to joke about: its a 'look' rather than nature.

If I were you I'd shave it slick and wait for the good comments!  O0

I don't quite understand the reason you want that little bit of stubble/shadow but bear in mind that the difference between a little bit of stubble and smoothed shave is minimal as far as the rest of the world is concerned.  However, the difference will be HUGE as far as you're concerned.  Shaved smooth is cleaner and easier to maintain (the stubble grows every day and when it's that short it's hard to keep it at a consistent length).  These two spots on your head that you're talking about are probably not noticeable to anyone but you.
