I hate to admit this, but I don't know how to fish. The really bad thing is that my son has no one to teach him.
Max, you're not alone. Same here. My dad never fished, so I never went when I was as kid. My father-in-law takes my boys when they go to visit. Both of them are pretty good and enjoy it. I've went along a couple of times, but I usually get made fun of when I try to cast. It's hard to teach the old dogs.....

I've been fishing since I was a little kid was never very good at it. I do catch 'em here and there, but like Timmy, just to get outdoors and enjoy the peace and quiet.
As a kid I mostly went freshwater fishing, but as an adult (at least the past 8 years) I've gotten into surf-casting in open ocean. We get an occasional bluefish or striper ... I also like crabbing. I've gotten hundreds of those little dudes over time ....
Nothing like being on the beach early in the morning doing some surf-casting. I drive a pipe into the sand, throw my line way out, secure my fishing rod in the pipe, grab my coffee and relax ... and then every once in a while I actually catch something. My best was a 30 lb bonita tuna, right off the beach.
Of course when I bring any of the girls along (wife, daughter, sister-in-law, etc..) I spend my entire time baiting their hooks, untangling their lines, removing any fish they catch .... They just want to turn the reel and then scream at the sight of worms, eels, or fish.

Both my grandfathers loved to fish so they have passed it on to the entire family, men and women. Last fished last fall in the U.P. Great walleye, salmon, and northern country. Can't wait for opening day walleye season on 15 May. We are teaching a life skills class at the high school this year and as I teach in an area called the Chain of Lakes, we are taking the boys from our behavioral class out fishing soon too.

Paul if you are into serious Walleye fishing, you ought to make the 2 1/2 trip east to Toledo and fish the mighty Maumee River. Some of the best Walleye fishing in the country can be found between Perrysburg and Toledo before the Maumee goes into Lake Erie. I remember some years where you'd have 300 men shoulder to shoulder across the entire width of the river. We are talking like 300 yards bank to bank, it is good fun.

I got tired of just feeding the dang fish so I gave it up, my friend in FL had a charter boat and I'd go just to be on the boat.

I went fishing of the Pacifica Pier about 2 years ago. You don't need a license to fish off the pier, so it was a great place to go. I caught a few fish, but none worth keeping in my mind so I tossed 'em back.

The last time I went fishing was probably about 15 years ago, when I was still in NY. One of my friends was always into fishing from a young age. He knew quite alot about it, and went whenever he could.
He was always telling me how great it was and asked me to go surfcasting with him and another friend of ours. I didn't have much fishing experience and I can relate to Lance and Max in this area.
Anyway, I went (didn't catch anything) but did find it to be a good way to have some guy time, some brews and just bs and enjoy the outdoors, like Timmay says.
I think sitting on the bank, trees overhead, brew in hand, and just relaxing and enjoying nature sounds really cool. If you get a bite, you get a bite. If not, no big deal. Just some good time outdoors, which is well needed these days.
