The Bald Truth About CEOs - USA Today Article

I'm really not sure what to think about this article.  I was pinged by the author for some information, but I didn't have much to provide him other than information that I had learned here at the site, which isn't exactly scientific by comparison.

The author was trying to find out if being bald helped or hurt someone that wanted to become a CEO.  Though, I'm not sure he did a very good job of getting to a conclusion, for the main reason that I don't think there is a conclusion to come to.  As we all know, it's not about how much hair you have, but how much confidence you have.  Sometimes your lack of hair can bring down your confidence, and shaving can often help boost that back up to normal or even above normal, but other guys just aren't affected by loss of hair.

What are your thoughts on this article?

I think this article serves as proof that our society puts way too much emphasis on hair.  I think hair loss could actually be an advantage to a CEO as it tends to make people look older than they are and that might enable them to command a little more respect.  For far too long, bald has been equated with really bad combovers or guys who had hairdos like Larry from the Three Stooges.  Thankfully that is changing.  I think we're pretty much to the point where with most people a completely bald head is pretty much a neutral thing.

You often see "Corporate Announcement" columns in newspapers and trade journals that include pictures of the people being hired or promoted.

I happened upon one a few months ago that had a picture of a sly CEO.  I forget which company it was for, but I thought it was ironic that it was one of the large hair care product manufacturers, like Alberto Culver or one of those.

I guess you don't have to have hair to sell shampoo...
