Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor
« on: April 26, 2008, 09:47:09 AM »
I know this has been discussed a few times before, but last night I was watching Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut and when I saw Hackman onscreen wearing a very obvious bald cap, I had to wonder how on earth he could have sat in a makeup chair and then gotten that "preview" of what he'd look like with a bald head and NOT want to go ahead and shave!  I guess we have to consider the era.  But he had lousy hair to begin with and the bald look was so much better ...

And speaking of things that are better, I highly recommend this version of the film to anyone who hasn't already seen it.  Much better than what ended up getting released back in 1980.

I heartily agree that GH looks much better sly, but have to disagree with the view on the Donner Cut. A complete train wreck in my opinion. Not that I think the released version didn't have problems, but the recut was not an improvement. But if you enjoyed it, that's cool.

I thought the scenes in the recut where Lois was trying to (and eventually succeeded) prove that Clark was Superman were so much better.  And the additonal footage of Marlon Brando was fantastic.  It always bothered me that the theatrical version never bothered to explain what happened when Clark went back to the fortress to try and get his powers back.  This version went into all of that and was much better, IMO.  The only thing I didn't like was the final scene, which didn't make sense in light of the changes that had been made to the storyline.  They should have stopped right before that scene.  Not perfect, but all in all, I think it worked.
